In his book, As Long as They Don't Move Next Door, Stephen Grant Meyer examines the history of housing segregation in the United States. He asserts that, while African Americans have made great advancements toward equal citizenship, the continued tendency of Whites and African Americans to live in separate neighborhoods remains a significant impediment to improving race relations in the United States. Meyer concludes that the negative perception many Whites have of African Americans is responsible for the lack of integration found in America's neighborhoods. This Book Review takes Meyer's analysis a step further and argues that in order to promote long-term change in neighborhood integration, it is also necessary to address the underlying class-based fears, grounded in the protection of their property, that cause many white Americans to discriminate against African Americans.

"Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu" translates into a person is a person because of people. There is an idea of unity in this frequently used Zulu proverb that is posted boldly next to the Afrocentric logo on the African Union International School (AUIS) website in Midrand South, Africa. All these words are factors within Pan-Africanism, and AUIS is more than an international school in South Africa, but it is one of two schools created by the African Centered Educational Foundation (ACE). The other school is called the African American Academy in Douala, Cameroon. Under the auspice of ACE, both schools share a very special mission implied within its vision that includes an education for the African Renaissance. Through a content analysis, this paper will illustrate how the African Centered Education Foundation represents Pan-Africanism through the institutionalization of African Centered Education illustrated by their technological media (school websites, facebook, online articles), educational tools (brochures, teacher evaluations, lesson plans, teacher's introduction package), and their African diaspora volunteer teacher program.

"Black families and the Recession in the United States goes beyond the massive loss of property among African Americans during the Great Recession of 2007-2009. It connects the housing experience to broader systems of inequality in America. Following the Great Recession of 2007-2009, the U.S. elections of 2008, the impact of COVID -19, and widespread demonstrations resulting from the murder of George Floyd by police; the socio-political and economic status of Blacks in the U.S. is at a critical point in history with demand for major transformation. The authors reveal a history of racist practices against Blacks in many systems, including education, policing, incarceration, wealth transmission, voting restrictions, and housing segregation. The social costs of the recession are manifested in the daily lives of African American families. In addition to financial losses, African Americans are more likely to be plagued with issues related to poverty, chronic illnesses, and lack of trust of social and economic institutions. Research, policy and practical implications of this research include identifying social and economic supports unique to African Americans and determining strategies to strengthen families; paramount to addressing racial disparities. Daisy Bates (1914-1999) is renowned as the mentor of the Little Rock Nine, the first African Americans to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. This article explores how internalized racial oppression affected the psychosocial functioning of Edward, an African American male client who struggled with racial identity problems. The African American racial identity developmental stage model proposed by Cross (1991) contextualizes aspects of Edwards "lived experiences." Attachment, relational, and self-psychological notions are used to ground the clinical processes. This article addresses the usefulness of an intersubjectively informed relationship involving Edward and an African American male therapist, and practice considerations are elucidated.

Abstract The marginalized and oppressed position of African American women has influenced their reproduction throughout history. From the force breeding of slavery, the lack of information about reproductive health during the Women's Right Movement and accusations of genocide by their racial counterparts during the 1960's, African American women have been torn and pushed into different directions. In interviewing young college-educated black women, I have found that discourses about the politics of race, gender and reproduction have influenced their beliefs and consequently their decisions. These discourses include frameworks of upward mobility, self-identification, racial solidarity, stereotypical images, religion and health. The one that has been most salient in my research is upward mobility and self-advancement. Their beliefs about reproduction, contraception and sex in general are shaped by their wants to better themselves as individuals and challenge the stereotypical representations of African American women that they encounter.

It is broadly recognized that black style had a clear and profound influence on the history of dress in the twentieth century, with black culture and fashion having long been defined as cool . Yet despite this high profile, in-depth explorations of the culture and history of style and dress in the African diaspora are a relatively recent area of enquiry. The Birth of Cool asserts that cool is seen as an arbiter of presence, and relates how both iconic and ordinary black individuals and groups have marked out their lives through the styling of their bodies. Focusing on counter- and sub-cultural contexts, this book investigates the role of dress in the creation and assertion of black identity. From the gardenia corsage worn by Billie Holiday to the work-wear of female African-Jamaican market traders, through to the home-dressmaking of black Britons in the 1960s, and the meaning of a polo-neck jumper as depicted in a 1934 self-portrait by African-American artist Malvin Gray Johnson, this study looks at the ways in which the diaspora experience is expressed through self-image. Spanning the late nineteenth century to the modern day, the book draws on ready-made and homemade fashion, photographs, paintings and films, published and unpublished biographies and letters from Britain, Jamaica, South Africa, and the United States to consider how personal style statements reflect issues of racial and cultural difference. A review of John Hoberman's Darwin's Athletes: How Sport Has Damaged Black America and Preserved the Myth of Race (1997) argues that it reinforces stereotypes of black intellectual inferiority & physical/athletic superiority. It is argued that such "pseudoscientific" analysis reinforces racist ideas & myths. Abstract This article explores the student strike which won Ethnic Studies and Black college student admissions. The San Francisco State Strike of 1968 which shut down the campus for five months was unique in its vision, its intensity, its class composition, its strategies, and its relationship to both the Black community and non-Black student organizations. The event is significant because the creation of Ethnic Studies as an academic field has vastly expanded humanity's knowledge of African-American history and the history of other people of color, and the percentage of Black students completing four years of college more than doubled in the period following this strike and subsequent similar college movements. One of the authors was a leader of the Black Student Union Central Committee. The authors use interviews with the leaders, personal reflection, and archival material to draw conclusions about the reasons for the strike's success and long-lasting impact. Its lessons may have importance for the racial and social justice movements of today.
