This transmedia phenomenon may be a common strategy in Hollywood's blockbuster fiction factory, tied up with digital marketing and fictional world-building, but transmediality is so much more than global movie franchises. Different cultures around the world are now making new and often far less commercial uses of transmediality, applying this phenomenon to the needs and structures of a nation and re-thinking it in the form of cultural, political and heritage projects. Pleasure-based politics in Puerto Rican and Cuban pop culture Joy is a politicized form of pleasure that goes beyond gratification to challenge norms of gender, sexuality, race, and class. Kristie Soares focuses on the diasporic media of Puerto Rico and Cuba to examine how music, public activist demonstrations, social media, sitcoms, and other areas of culture resist the dominant stories told about Latinx joy. As she shows, Latinx creators compose versions of joy central to social and political struggle and at odds with colonialist and imperialist narratives that equate joy with political docility and a lack of intelligence. The purpose of this article is to compare and contrast the US press coverage accorded to female terrorist plotter, Colleen LaRose, with that of two male terrorist plotters in order to test whether assertions in the academic literature regarding media treatment of women terrorists stand up to empirical scrutiny. The authors employed TextSTAT software to generate frequency counts of all words contained in 150 newspaper reports on their three subjects and then slotted relevant terms into categories fitting the commonest female terrorist frames, as identified by Nacos's article in Studies in Conflict and Terrorism (2005). The authors' findings confirm that women involved in terrorism receive significantly more press coverage and are framed vastly differently in the US press than their male counterparts.

A study was conducted in Venezuela to explore the scope and the external validity of a model—nominal agenda diversity—representing the factors that lead people to identity a greater number of social problems as important. Using survey data gathered in an urban area of this media-rich developing country, three hypotheses were tested. The first two focused on those members of the society with a higher socioeconomic status (SES). Would they be more likely to attend to the information-and entertainment-oriented content in the mass media (television and newspapers) and be able to identify a larger number of problem areas in their region and in the country than those of lower SES? Further, it was hypothesized that the greater the exposure to newspaper content (both news and nonnews sections), as compared to exposure of people to television, the greater the nominal agenda diversity. A structural equation framework (LISREL) showed strong support for these hypotheses.

This study examines the potential for alternative and social media to stimulate the core antecedents of protest participation (identity, efficacy, and anger) in the context of Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement. Findings from a representative sample supported the social identity model of collective action (SIMCA), such that all antecedents predicted intended protest participation. Identity and anger mediated the relationship between online alternative news and protest intention, while anger and efficacy mediated the relationship between social media news and protest intention. The findings demonstrate the benefits of theoretical integration from related disciplines to better understand the mobilizing potential of collective action through news media use.

The following analysis was done as a part of an EU-funded research project SOMECAT. A literature analysis for German publications in Switzerland and Germany in the field of Social Media and Diaspora shows that there is few research focusing explicitly on social media. The following article summarizes the state-of-the-art German language literature on Internet-media and migration studies approximately over the last decade. This research area has been taken into account mostly as part of the broad (mass) media landscape. We start with introducing the current situation in the area of Internet and migration studies and then present research directions in the general field of migration and media studies. In our analysis we took into account German and Swiss studies. The overview distinguishes the research questions addressed in the literature, the theoretical framework and some selected empirical studies.

Existing research on party behaviour has largely focused on the drivers of issue salience in direct party communication. However, less is known about party-issue linkages in election campaigns covered by the mass media, from which most voters get their information about party positions. Against this background, this article explores how two important drivers of issue salience in direct party communication - issue ownership and systemic salience - play out in the media. Based on considerations about the news value of specific party-issue associations, one would expect both relationships to be particularly important in the media. Despite substantial similarities in party-issue linkages across platforms, a comparison of manifestos and newspaper content reveals evidence for this claim. In particular, smaller parties are hardly covered in the news on issues they do not own, while large parties are especially covered on salient topics. These findings contribute to our understanding of issue competition in mediated environments.

This book explores the struggles over the mediated construction and projection of the image of the nation at times of social unrest. Focusing on the June 2013 protests in Brazil, it examines how different actors -authorities, activists, the national media, foreign correspondents- disseminated competing versions of 'what Brazil was' during that pivotal episode. The book offers a fresh conceptual approach, supported by media coverage analysis and original interviews, that demonstrates the potential of digital media to challenge power structures and establish new ways of representing the nation. It also highlights the vulnerability of both 'old' and 'new' media to forms of inequality and disruption due to political interferences, technological constraints, and continuing commercial pressures. Contributing to the study of media and the nation as well as media and social movements, the author throws into sharp relief the profound transformation of mediated nationhood in a digital and global media environment.
