Marxist politics
This book deals with the main doctrines of Marxist politics. Clearly and simply written, the book explores the views of classical Marxists along with the findings of Western and Analytical Marxists. It also shows a distinction between Marxist and non-Marxist views on politics. Their points of difference as well as their common roots are thus clearly accounted for. Marxist politics is a coherent system of ideas and theories of class, class struggle, party, revolution and the state developed in response to a series of major and interrelated changes - the emergence of a capitalist economy, the rise of the modern nation-state and the development of modern science, which transformed both the society and politics. This book is intended to explore these ideas and theories. Particular emphasis has been put on the ideas and views of critical Marxists in a separate chapter. The book includes brief bibliographical details of major individual thinkers as well as an annotated bibliography for further reading. Talking politics
This paper revisits the author's Ph.D. research in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester during the early 1960s. Wes Sharrock also was a PhD student there, and they shared dissatisfactions with the predominant approaches to sociology at the time, and turned for inspiration Winch's critique of social science and Wittgenstein's philosophy of language. At that time they also became acquainted with the empirical alternative to sociology offered by ethnomethodology. This paper describes how insights inspired through frequent and long conversations with Sharrock inspired the approach the author took in his observational study of active members of a local political party. The study was focused on 'The Left Wing' of that party, but rather than treating talk of 'The Left' as a representation of a stable ideological group, the study paid close attention to the discursive use of the distinction between members of the local party leadership, and elucidated the changing membership of 'The Left Wing' and the occasioned relevance of being included in that category. The study suggested that 'talking politics' was not a merely a matter of talking about politics, but was an expression of and constitutive feature of local party politics. ; + Sprache: eng.

One of the more controversial arguments of The Precariat is that this new class is entirely distinct from the traditional working class. The idea of the proletariat, Guy Standing says, suggests "workers in long-term, stable, fixed-hour jobs with established routes of advancement, subject to unionization and collective agreements, with job titles their fathers and mothers would have understood, facing local employers whose names and features [are] familiar." These characteristics are almost completely absent from the employment experience of the precariat, and their absence so alters the work experience that these workers constitute a class of their own.
