AbstractThe Mothers Unit is a reunification and treatment programme in a welfare emergency centre in Israel. The unit is the only one in Israel offering joint residence for mothers at risk of abusing or neglecting their children. The unit provides an alternative to out‐of‐home care for young children suffering from maltreatment in order to enable them and their mothers to return to the community together at the end of the treatment. The current qualitative study examines the lived experiences of the women and their children from the subjective perspective of the women currently or previously involved in the programme and of the professionals working with them. Thematic analysis of 36 in‐person semi‐structured interviews reveals the multiple meanings they attribute to life in the Mothers Unit and its perceived effects on their children and themselves.

Today, more than 50% of the world's population lives in cities and is subject to particular environmental and economic impacts against the backdrop of an evolving planetary crisis. This book explores the intimate relationship between the quality of life of city dwellers and the quality of urban landscapes, including those regenerated through green spaces and environmental networks. Starting from the concept of "landscape" as defined by the European Landscape Convention (i.e. "an area, perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors"), it expands upon, in particular, the interactions between the different biotic and abiotic components that contribute to the quality of the landscape and the environment. In the first part of the book, the author examines fundamental concepts and discusses a variety of relevant topics, such as the city under transformation, waste spaces, smart communities, regeneration programs, the role of environmental networks, and new instruments for decision making. The second part is devoted to a case study of the Italian Adriatic city that highlights the need for interdisciplinary interaction among researchers in apparently disparate fields, including ecology, forest botany, chemistry, biology, geology, sociology, economics, architecture, and engineering.​

Der Beitrag untersucht die Frage, wie Familien tagein, tagaus einen gemeinsamen Lebensbezug herstellen bzw. im Kontext weitreichender Deregulierungs- und Flexibilisierungsprozesse im Erwerbsleben aufrechterhalten. Es wird diskutiert, dass alltägliche Lebensführung nicht nur ein individuelles Programm ist, sondern in der Regel in der gemeinsamen Leistung mehrerer Personen besteht. Familienleben ist demnach Ergebnis eines aktiven Prozesses der Verschränkung individueller Lebensführungen. Wie diese Leistung aussieht und welche Ergebnisse sie haben kann, erarbeitet die Autorin auf Grundlage einer empirischen Untersuchung über die Umgangsweise der Beschäftigten mit einem neuen Arbeitszeitmodell der Volkswagen-AG. Sie plädiert dabei nicht zuletzt für eine Verbindung von Arbeits-, Familien- und Geschlechtersoziologie mithilfe eines Konzeptes "familialer Lebensführung". (ICH)

Objective: understanding the daily life of a woman undergoing hemodialysis. Method: qualitative study conducted with 9 women by means of interviews in February and March 2013 in the hemodialysis unit of a hospital in Zona da Mata (Minas Gerais), Brazil. Results: the comprehensive analysis unveiled 3 units of meaning: having a chronic kidney disease and facing hemodialysis, hemodialysis and its reactions, the daily life of a woman treated with hemodialysis. Feelings of fear and rejection were noticed. However, religion and family proved to be important for acceptance and hope during treatment. Conclusion: we highlight the importance of the nurse's role in the substitutive renal therapy service. This professional works as an educator, promoting selfcare and assisting the female patients to find new ways to live according to their own limitations.

AbstractIn everyday situations, and particularly in some sport and working contexts, humans face an inherently unpredictable and uncertain environment. All sorts of unpredictable and unexpected things happen but typically people are able to skillfully adapt. In this paper, we address two key questions in cognitive science. First, how is an agent able to bring its previously learned skill to bear on a novel situation? Second, how can an agent be both sensitive to the particularity of a given situation, while remaining flexibly poised for many other possibilities for action? We will argue that both the sensitivity to novel situations and the sensitivity to a multiplicity of action possibilities are enabled by the property of skilled agency that we will callmetastable attunement. We characterize a skilled agent's flexible interactions with a dynamically changing environment in terms of metastable dynamics in agent-environment systems. What we find in metastability is the realization of two competing tendencies: the tendency of the agent to express their intrinsic dynamics and the tendency to search for new possibilities. Metastably attuned agents are ready to engage with a multiplicity of affordances, allowing for a balance between stability and flexibility. On the one hand, agents are able to exploit affordances they are attuned to, while at the same time being ready to flexibly explore for other affordances. Metastable attunement allows agents to smoothly transition between these possible configurations so as to adapt their behaviour to what the particular situation requires. We go on to describe the role metastability plays in learning of new skills, and in skilful behaviour more generally. Finally, drawing upon work in art, architecture and sports science, we develop a number of perspectives on how to investigate metastable attunement in real life situations.

Biohacking, or do-it-yourself (DIY) biology, has rapidly established itself as a distinctive movement over the past 6 years. Numerous media articles have reported on biohacking, and it has even entered the museum world, in an exhibition called Biohacking: Do-It-Yourself at the Medical Museion in Copenhagen. DIY biology is today a rather fashionable phenomenon, attracting an increasing number of practitioners, journalists, academics, scientists, students, citizens, hackers, artists, and potential entrepreneurs. This paper analyses the DIY biology movement. The paper examines its history and genealogy, its politics of openness, and its ethics and economic logics and argues that these need to be carefully analyzed and defy neat categories and simple narratives. The politics of life are complex and multifaceted - and the politics of hacking life are no exception.
