This thesis presents a stakeholder management discussion from a specific company operating in an underdeveloped country (São Tomé and Príncipe). The company – HBD-STP – is investing in an ecotourism project and, thanks to its inspirational founder (Mark Shuttleworth), it is highly committed with the sustainable development of the Príncipe region. Starting by questioning "Which strategies should be adopted by HBD-STP to create sustainable value for its critical stakeholders?", my research aims to identify the company's critical stakeholders and the strategies that could be adopted to create sustainable value for them. My analysis presents a stakeholder management process, that enables the managers to identify and to map each of the stakeholders and to define adequate strategies for them, based on the stakeholders' claims and contributions. Regarding the HBD-STP case, these strategies are oriented to create sustainable value for the critical stakeholders: Customers, Government, Community, Owners, and Staff. ; Esta tese apresenta uma discussão sobre gestão de stakeholders de uma empresa específica a operar num país em desenvolvimento (São Tomé e Príncipe). A empresa – HBD-STP – está a investir num projeto de ecoturismo e, graças ao seu fundador inspirador (Mark Shuttleworth), está fortemente comprometida com o desenvolvimento sustentado da região do Príncipe. Começando por questionar "Que estratégias devem ser adotadas pela HBD-STP para criar valor sustentável para os seus stakeholders críticos?", a minha pesquisa tenta identificar os stakeholders críticos da empresa e as estratégias que podem ser adotadas para criar valor para estes. A minha análise apresenta um processo de gestão de stakeholders, que permite aos gestores identificar e mapear cada um dos stakeholders e definir estratégias adequadas para estes, baseado nas necessidade e contribuições de cada stakeholder. No caso da HBD-STP, estas estratégias estão orientadas para criar valor sustentável para os stakeholders críticos: Clientes, Governo, Comunidade, Diretores e Colaboradores.

How can global governance shape a transformation toward sustainability? How can a transformation toward sustainability shape new forms and strategies on global governance? These questions grow increasingly important as the human impact on the environment increasingly exceeds the planetary boundaries (Rockstrom et al. 2009; Steffen and Smith 2013; Steffen et al. 2015). In addition, the prevailing approach to sustainability will only achieve sustainable futures for some, which would not be sustainable at all. In the post1992 era, roadblock after roadblock for global governance on sustainability was confronted and increased skepticism became warranted. In this context, the Rio?20 Conference in 2012 was seen as a conference with little substantive purpose (Andresen and Underdal 2012) and interest grew in efforts that ''tipped toward'' sustainability (Westley et al. 2011) rather than hard law-induced transformations. Global governance was seen to have the wrong processes and wrong ideas, animated by zero-sum interstate negotiations and a prioritization of the liberal international economic order over any alternatives. If we approached the question from a traditional effectiveness or influence perspective (Bernstein and Cashore 2012), such skepticism is understandable. Formal rules of the environment gave way to less legalistic approaches to sustainability in a muddled institutional context. Specifically, the Rio?20 process produced nothing in the realm of hard law, and the small-scale efforts appear scattered haphazardly without a core to organize global action. An alternative approach though would highlight that such outcomes have potential impacts primarily in changing global governance practices, defined as the techniques actors use to make sense of the world (Best 2014). Twenty-five years after it entered the mainstream of global development discourse, "sustainable" remains a vague concept. Adopted by the powerful and the powerless, the term has been used to describe everything from consumer products to entire economic systems. Meanwhile, conciliatory democratic politics have suffered under a heavily money-influenced political process. This paper critiques conventional views on the definition of sustainability, and the proposed solutions that emerge therefrom. Ultimately, even the most useful concept in sustainable development discourse—the "three-legged stool" of social, ecological, and economic concerns—remains inadequate. The failure to implement the three-legged stool in practice indicates that contradictions between desired outcomes in each leg are an inherent and perpetual problem for society. Modern sustainability discourse, in its focus on ideal outcomes, fails to provide guidance for what to do when these contradictions occur. In promoting deliberative democratic decision-making for government, business, and civil society as a means towards sustainability, the author emphasizes sustainability as a process, not an achievement, even if that process relies on some widely accepted sustainability indicators to gauge its direction. By paying attention to the limits and failures of current models of societal decision-making (including the ways economic structures delimit behavioral options), sustainability discourse can elaborate a successful alternative: widespread, multi-level, nested, and interacting deliberative democratic processes that address the usage and pollution of natural resources. This paper also analyzes urbanization as a contentious subject within sustainability discourse, and as a key element in deliberative democratic development and the iterative mitigation of environmental problems.

With the deterioration of ecological environment, sustainable supply chain management has become an important means of enterprise performance evaluation. During the implementation of a sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), Chinese enterprises are faced with domestic and overseas institutional pressures, such as laws, regulations, and agenda, etc. Then, whether the dual institutional pressure has a promoting role for Chinese manufacturing enterprises in implementing the SSCM and whether the sustainable supply chain practices (SSCP) can promote the output of enterprise performance, have become a topic worthy of study. Hypothesis on the relationship between the institutional pressure of sustainable supply chain and economic, social, and environmental performances is innovatively raised in this paper and a theoretical model is built. Besides, a fitting test is conducted to a full model by using a structural equation model. An optimal model is eventually obtained after repeated modifications to the initial model by means of goodness of fit and causal path coefficient, thereby it is verified in this paper that the institutional pressure has a significantly positive impact on the SSCP ; a conclusion is drawn that the impact of the SSCP on the economic, environmental, and social performances shows different characteristics, which has an important theoretical guiding role in promoting the SSCP.

This article provides a first-hand account of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) & an analysis of how to advance environmentalist concerns in the post-Jo'burg era. It reviews some of the achievements & disappointments of the Summit & describes significant changes in global environmental affairs that the WSSD was unable fully to appreciate & which, therefore, must be addressed in the post-Jo'burg world. One change is a switch in emphasis in the North & South in terms of sustainable development. For too long we've been told that the North is concerned with the environment while the South is focused on development. At the WSSD it became clear, however, that this is no longer the case. Many in the North now claim a development focus although, to be sure, through the more fundamental goal of economic globalization. Concomitantly, many in the South voice a commitment to environmental sustainability as a way to reduce poverty. A second change has to do with the power of environmentalism. After enjoying much strength, concern for the environment is flagging throughout much of the world as key states find themselves distracted by geopolitical concerns in the aftermath of the September 11th (2001) attacks. Both changes indicate the need to rethink environmentalist strategies in a post-Jo'burg era. The article offers several suggestions including abandoning sustainable development as a policy objective (although keeping it as a conceptual framework) & resuscitating the older, more narrow & arguably less complicated goals of environmental protection. 2 References. This paper intends to analyse the efforts made by India to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It prepares a thorough analysis of the gender challenges in each of the Goals. The interconnectedness of the Goals established in this paper makes it necessary to adopt a holistic approach to promoting gender equality and inclusion. The analyses of data on India include examining the present status, analysing the trend in attaining the target for chosen indicators and projecting the status of India for 2030.

Sustainable food systems are often defined by greenhouse gases, land use, effects on biodiversity, and water use. However, this approach does not recognize the reason food is produced-the provision of nutrients. Recently, the relationship between diets and sustainability has been recognized. Most accepted models of 'sustainable diets' focus on four domains: public health, the environment, food affordability, and cultural relevance. Aligned with the FAO's perspective, truly sustainable diets comprise foods that are affordable, nutritious, developed with ingredients produced in an environmentally friendly manner, and consumer preferred. Identifying solutions to address all four domains simultaneously remains a challenge. Furthermore, the recent pandemic exposed the fragility of the food supply when food accessibility and affordability became primary concerns. There have been increasing calls for more nutrient-dense and sustainable foods, but scant recognition of the consumer's role in adopting and integrating these foods into their diet. Dietary recommendations promoting sustainable themes often overlook how and why people eat what they do. Taste, cost, and health motivate consumer food purchase and the food system must address those considerations. Sustainable foods are perceived to be expensive, thus marginalizing acceptance by the people, which is needed for broad adoption into diets for impactful change. Transformational change is needed in food systems and supply chains to address the complex issues related to sustainability, taste, and cost. An emerging movement called regenerative agriculture (a holistic, nature-based approach to farming) provides a pathway to delivering sustainable foods at an affordable cost to consumers. A broad coalition among academia, government, and the food industry can help to ensure that the food supply concurrently prioritizes sustainability and nutrient density in the framework of consumer-preferred foods. With the current global greenhouse gas emissions, our remaining carbon budget is depleted in only 7 years. After that, several biophysical systems are predicted to collapse such as the arctic ice, coral reefs and the permafrost, leading to potentially irreversible consequences. Our emissions are strongly correlated to access of energy and even if we are aware of the planetary emergency today, our emissions still continue to grow. Electrical vehicles have the possibility to reduce the emissions in the transportation sector significantly. However, these vehicles are still expensive and impractical for long-distance or heavy transportation. While political actions and technological development are essential to keep prices down, the driving dis- tance can be increased by replacing the batteries for onboard electricity production. In hydrogen fuel cells, electricity is produced by combining hydrogen gas (H2) and oxygen with only water as the by-product and if employed in electrical vehicles, distances of 500 km are enabled with a refueling time in 5 minutes. For other uses than in vehicles, H2 is also promising for large-scale electricity storage and for several industrial processes such as manufacturing CO2-free steel, ammonia and synthetic fuels. However, today most H2 production methods relies on fossil fuels and releases huge amounts of CO2. Electrolysis of water is an alternative production method where H2, along with oxygen are produced from water. To split the water, electricity has to be added and if renewable energy sources are used, the method has zero emissions and is considered most promising for a sustainable hydrogen energy economy. The tech- nique is relatively expensive compared to the fossil fuel-based methods and relies on rare noble metals such as platinum as catalysts for decreasing the required energy to split water. For large scale productions, these metals need to be replaced by more sustainable and abundant catalysts to lower the cost and minimize the environmental impacts. In this thesis we have investigated such candidates for the water splitting reaction but also to some extent for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. By combining theory and experiments we hope to aid in the development and facilitate a transition to clean hydrogen energy. We find among other things that i) defects in catalytic materials plays a significant role the performance and efficiency, and that ii) heterogeneity influence the adsorption energies of reaction intermediates and hence the catalytic efficiency and iii) while defects are not often studied for electrocatalytic reactions, these may inspire for novel materials in the future.
