North Maluku is the youngest province in Indonesia which has begun to carry out democracy through the Election of Regional Heads (Pilkada). One of the largest regional elections in North Maluku is the Governor's Election. Unfortunately the Governor's Election that has been running so far has been colored by various problems. Symbolic violence such as black campaigns by bringing down political opponents using ethnic and primordial issues sprang up. In addition, the ability of figures to build the image of political actors who have power and influence also makes people accept the results of regional elections that are full of disputes. Coupled with the condition of the mass media that have a tendency to take sides because of certain interests, the existence of social construction on the image of political actors is getting stronger. This study wants to see how the image of political actors is constructed. Through the Focused Group Discussion method with the parties involved it was found that social construction of reality had happened through the role of mass media. Although there are social constructions conveyed by the mass media, the community has its own ability to build that image in itself through the power of interaction and communication as well as through the power of other media such as social media.

Describes the controversy in the Netherlands over the 1968 Disability Insurance Act as a clash of two competing icons -- disability allowance as an entitlement vs disability allowance as a problem -- focusing on the generation of collective action frames in unions. It is noted that before government consultations on the act took place in 1990, most citizens & social actors did not view disability insurance as a problem. However, after the government released a series of reports, & various social actors began to take positions in the national debate, the two competing icons emerged. From a social cognitive perspective, it is shown that social actors developed collective action frames oriented around one of these frames. In particular, unions developed an injustice frame centered on the idea that disability insurance was an entitlement. Analysis of 45 articles published in two national newspapers in 1991 indicate that news discourse played a small role in this process in that it composed a very limited narrative that signaled little beyond the fact that a conflict existed. Instead, the generation of a strong collective action frame is explained as a result of internal dynamics & communication systems in unions themselves. It is argued that news discourse was effective only to the extent that it placed the unions in opposition to the government, thus helping to develop an adversarial frame. 7 Tables, 2 Figures, 3 Schemas. Acute questions about the contradictions in mass consciousness and consequently in the field of education are raised. The issue of «progress» in the development of society is raised. The Soviet educational system and a modern one are compared. The drawbacks of the current planning process in higher education institutions are pointed out.

This article examines conceptions of American national identity by contrasting Americans' responses to the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 with their responses to the terrorist attacks in 2001. Examinations of official rhetoric, mass media statements, and public opinion polls after Pearl Harbor and after 9/11 reveal changes as well as continuities in the relationship between conceptions of national identity and responses to experiencing threat in the face of diversity. Lingering ascriptivist views have been awakened by 9/11, yet this narrow image of American identity is being directly challenged by a more inclusive incorporationist tradition. This clash of symbolic conceptions of national identity results in divergence between elite rhetoric and mass opinion, with elites promoting incorporationism and ordinary citizens displaying the reawakening of ascriptivist norms.

This paper focuses on the analysis of the uses of the Internet by activists of the 15-M movement. We pay attention to two processes: the use of the Internet I) as a vehicle of communication with their potential audiences and II) as a technology that allows to circulate an alternative framework. Therefore we analyzed also the role played by the newspapers during the regional and municipal elections of 2011 when the movement burst onto the Spanish public life. Facing the frameworks developed by the newspapers during this period, the activists reacted with a strategy to control the flow of information about what was happening in the streets of many cities in Spain. This strategy of communicative action revolves around the general framework of the 15-M and, thanks largely to the Internet, is focused on the need to develop forms of direct participation and the disintermediation of the relationships between activists and other citizens. ; Este trabajo se centra en el análisis de los usos de Internet por parte de los activistas del movimiento 15-M en dos sentidos: I) como vehículo de comunicación con sus potenciales audiencias y II) como estrategia que permite poner en circulación marcos alternativos a los ofrecidos por los mass media. Por ello analizamos, también, el papel que jugó la prensa escrita durante las elecciones autonómicas y municipales de 2011 cuando el movimiento irrumpió con fuerza en la vida pública española. Frente a los marcos desarrollados por la prensa escrita durante dicho periodo, los activistas del movimiento reaccionaron con una estrategia dirigida a controlar el flujo de información sobre lo que estaba sucediendo en las plazas de muchas ciudades de España. The effectiveness of political communication is a necessary result to build a synergistic political system. Many media are used for political communication. Recently, mass media like printed and electronic media are not only the communication platforms. There is also social media considered very influential on the political communication. The model of political communication that occurs in the digital era is now very different from the last few years. Media or forums for political communication are already very diverse. In this era, all political communication media can be done on social media platforms. With social media, many barriers can be minimized. It cuts the costs and is more practical to build communication between public officials and their constituents. Yet, the absent of physical presence in social media could undermine how effective is indirect-communication without having a face-to-face or physical meeting. Does social media provide more effective features in the way of political communication? This study discusses several essential things in building and measuring the effectiveness of political communication between public officials and the community regarding the current development of communication.

To account for the divergent electoral fortunes of these parties, the book examines how political parties and the mass media have dealt with growing public concerns over national identity. Mainstream politicians chose to "play the nationalist card," creating opportunities for the entry of far-right parties into the political system.
