A revived interest in alcoholism since 1930 has developed specialized activities in treatment, education, and research. A new underlying philosophy has characterized fresh modes of action. State governmental programs have been outstanding. Research and study are grave needs. As new services for Skid Row drinkers have developed and nationally established general agencies and in stitutions have directed their attention to this aspect of the problem, sweeping programs have been proposed.

Integral to the Life Orientation curriculum is democracy and human right. This article contends that considering human rights cannot simply be a theoretical exercise as the implementation thereof affects lived human experience. Currently held narratives of lived experience need to be dialogically explored. Integrally linked to any such exploration is the identity of the explorer. It can be said that individuals are made to varying degrees by systems and networks of power in society, including dominant discourses. However, they also have the capacity, by exercising individual agency, to make themselves according to the way in which they respond to the intersections that shape identity, including ethnicity, culture, class, religion, gender, sexual orientation and so forth. This article seeks to explore teacher identity and, in particular, teacher religious identity, with a view to transformed Religion Education. The argument is made for Life Orientation teachers to negotiate their religious identity from a position of 'religious identity paralysis' or 'religious identity paradox' or even 'religious identity flexibility' to one of 'religious identity transformation'. Both in-service and pre-service teachers participated in the studies informing this article.

Based upon extended semistructured interviews with samples of state legislators and administrators in Kentucky and Minnesota, this comparative case study examines the consequences of legislative casework for state administrative performance. Although it is found that casework clearly does "humanize" the bureaucratic process, it does so at some not inconsiderable cost for the administrative values of universalism and affective neutrality. Casework appears to provide administrators with some useful feedback on agency operations and programs. In addition, casework-handling presents agencies with an opportunity to enhance legislative and citizen understanding of, and support for, agency activities. Although the overall judgment must be that positive consequences outweigh negative consequences, the study also finds more negative consequences than have sometimes been attributed to casework as far as effective administrative performance is concerned
