The article is an attempt to look at post-socialist tower blocks and modernist housing from a contemporary perspective. It takes the context of post-communist Europe as the basis for analysis, citing Sofia as an example. On the basis of the literature and references to the messages of mass culture, it shows the specificity of a metropolitan neighborhood, and leads the reader to a proposal for a conceptualization of 'neighborhood' using the notion of a neighborhood circle. The empirical part presents the results of a questionnaire carried out by means of a nationwide online survey and by means of interviews carried out in three Polish locations: Poznań, Warsaw and Wronki. The collected empirical data are described from the point of view of selected themes related to the concept of 'neighborhood circles', and analyzed statistically. The recommendations indicate the need to ask further detailed questions and invite discussion, and not only among urban sociologists, on the condition of modernist mass housing from the point of view of building neighborly relations.

This article aims to analyze the discussion of justice in Book I of Plato's 'Republic'. At first, it should be noted that the way Book I is built makes it very close to the Platonic dialogues of the youth, the controversy remaining in relation to its writing as an independent text or preface deliberately elaborated. In Book I Plato maps the common meanings of justice and deconstructs them in an intellectual path that responds to the traditional notions of morality and to the already degenerated political perspective of the sophists. With this, it signals the need to transcend the domains of mere opinion, in the name of a superior foundation for justice, universal and with a rational seal. The process of conceptual purification and contextual delimitation perpetrated in the first book helps to understand the complex ethical, metaphysical and political-educational reflections of the 'Republic', reason that leads us to infer the essentially propaedeutic character with which Book I it was elaborated.

Migration is a form of spatial and social transplant from one local and national context to another. Migration trajectories often expose the underlying intersections of social relations and social hierarchies that underpin cultural and social national environments. Migrants who encounter those complex structural inequalities must learn to negotiate classed, gendered and racialised social relations and seek the most suitable social positions within new systems. This article builds on Amartya Sen's capability approach to conceptualise migrants' embeddedness in the framework of social inequalities and explores the relationship between individual choices, resources and entitlements. It points towards patterns of advantage and disadvantage that frame migrants' opportunities and draws tacit analytical, theoretical and methodological links that have the innovative potential for the study of migration. Building on the parallels between studies in the fields of social inequalities and migration, this article argues that Sen's analytical and conceptual approach provides innovative insights into migration experiences, and Sen's unique reasoning opens up new avenues for the discussion of migrants' social justice.

This book is a forceful and entertaining argument why culture and values should be taken much more seriously, both by policy makers, but also in the curricula of modern Public Policy and Public Administration programs. The author is not a fundamental sceptic of managerial politics and administration, but he shows the inherent limits, contradictions, and blind spots of this kind of policy making. He succeeds particularly well because he can draw on many years of experience as a civil servant in different British ministries, in the Cabinet Office and the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit. The book adds little to the conceptual and theoretical discussions of cultural factors in policy making, but it does provide many interesting examples of their significance and why it is dangerous to ignore them. It should be read by students in advanced public policy and public administration programs, who should find it helpful to see the technical solutions to all sorts of policy problems in a somewhat more realistic light.

This article provides a scientific reflection on the need for considering the issue of new technologies and their development in contemporary social policy in Poland. The article focuses on three selected areas of social policy, which are most intensively influenced by the development of new technologies: labor market policies, education policies, and telecare, including some elements of senior policies. The publication initiates further discussion on the current challenges and dilemmas faced by social policymakers. It corresponds to the specific experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic related to intensified, technologically mediated forms of communication and remote forms of using social services. It argues that rapid development of new technologies changes the goals and ways of putting social policies into practice. Drawing on theoretical assumptions of technological determinism and new institutionalism, the article aims to conclude that adequate institutional and legislative changes should be the consequence of technological changes and they should lead to greater compatibility of systemic solutions with citizens' everyday practice.

This article discusses aspects of future research in communication sciences related to a popular and omnipresent artefact of algorithmic machines, social robots. Social robots are defined in this article as physical entities or machines, which may resemble a human being or animal and are able to replicate certain human or life-like movements and functions. Experts predict that robots, just like AI, will replace a significant number of jobs in the near future, including non-industrial jobs such as robots working in offices or the service industry alongside human 'co-workers' (Brookfield Institute, 2016; Ford, 2015; Gunkel, 2018). Likewise, we may find more robots in our private lives, for example, replacing human care workers (Ishiguro, 2018; McGinn et al., 2020). Overall, the field of robotics, and particularly social robots, offers a broad range of research opportunities and exigencies for communication scientists. The aim of this conceptual paper is to provide a framework for the discussion of algorithms, social robots and communication sciences.

Masculinity has been and continues to be of fundamental importance to Islamist movements, including the relatively distinct Turkish variety. The article offers a broad analysis of various aspects of Islamist masculinity in Turkey. It begins by examining how, from the 1950s onwards, Islamic intellectuals there conceived of a new political subjectivity based on an ideal masculinity. After a discussion of Islamist masculinity drawing on novels, manuals and other sources, the article demonstrates how everyday social practices (such as clothing and beards, or an interest in poetry) established further facets of Islamist masculinity. Turkish Islamism organised itself in the Milli Görüş movement beginning in the 1970s and rose to become a mass movement in the 1980s. Against this background, a new masculinity could be construed as a way out of the self-perceived inferiority to the West. In social practice, this masculinity was transformed by increasingly rigid rules of behaviour and the establishment of a distinct habitus of pathos and discipline, which is then analysed in conclusion.

Cultural education has recently been particularly emphasized as key for the promotion of equal opportunities, social cohesion and political engagement. While the relationship between political engagement and formal education has been extensively discussed, little research has been conducted on non‐formal types of education, such as non‐formal cultural education (NCE) in particular. However, the share of NCE programmes is becoming increasingly important as more and more formal institutions are reducing their cultural education programmes. This article examines, firstly, whether NCE actually promotes political engagement and, secondly, who effectively participates in NCE programmes. Using data from the eighth wave (2016–2017) of the German National Educational Panel Study, we implement a mediation analysis within ordered logistic regression models to disentangle the mechanisms at play. Our results indicate that NCE exerts a small but significant effect on political engagement directly and indirectly via political discussions and political interest. However, participation in NCE is strongly influenced by social strata. The advantages of NCE are therefore not evenly distributed across the German population.

Privat-Intimes in einem öffentlich-gesellschaftlichen Raum zu verhandeln, kann als ein spezifisches Merkmal psychosozialer Beratung gesehen werden. Die Herausforderung an eine Theoriebildung psychosozialer Beratung besteht darin, beide Perspektiven – die ethische (inter-individuelle Ebene) und politische (gesellschaftliche Ebene) – in den Blick zu nehmen, um beidem gerecht zu werden. Das Ausloten beider Perspektiven einer Ethik der Alterität nach Levinas und einer Gouvernementalität der Beratung nach Foucault zeigt eine Unvereinbarkeit dieser Ebenen. Eine Figur des Dritten bildet ein Scharnier, das weniger beide Ebenen zusammenführt als vielmehr einen Ort von Auseinandersetzung und Widerstreit markiert und damit die psychosoziale Beratung kennzeichnet.A specific characteristic of psychosocial counseling can be seen in negotiating private-intimate (counseling) in a public-social space (counseling institution). A challenge in developing theories of psychosocial counseling is to consider both perspectives – which can be described as the ethical (inter-individual level) and the political (social level) in order to do justice to both. The exploration of both perspectives of an ethics of alterity according to Levinas and a governmentality of counseling according to Foucault shows that both levels are incompatible. A figure of the third party reveals a hinge, which not so much brings both levels together but rather marks a place of discussion and conflict – this is what characterizes psychosocial counseling.

Die Autorin befasst sich mit der steuerrechtlichen Förderung des Sports, die seit Jahrzehnten Gegenstand intensiver Diskussionen und rechtspolitischer Entwicklungen ist. Im Kern der Überlegungen stehen die Fragestellungen, inwiefern die gemeinnützigkeitsrechtliche Förderung des Sports, auch und gerade vor dem Hintergrund aktueller Berichterstattungen über Fehlverhalten bei Sportvereinen oder -verbänden, dem Grunde nach weiterhin ihre Berechtigung findet oder reformbedürftig ist. -- Neben einer Einordnung der steuerrechtlichen Grundsätze und Regelungszusammenhänge der Gemeinnützigkeit des Sports erfolgt eine Analyse sowohl aus rechtshistorischem, dogmatischem als auch rechtspolitischem Blickwinkel. Basierend auf den daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnissen werden zudem neu aufkommende Sportarten wie E-Sport untersucht. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt auf der Einordnung sportspezifischer Vorschriften wie der 50+1-Regel im gemeinnützigkeitsrechtlichen Kontext. / »Non-profit Status of Sports. Is Sports Funding in Germany in Need of Reform?«: The author deals with the advancement of sports under German tax law, which has been the subject of intensive discussions and developments for decades. At the core of the considerations are the questions regarding the extent to which the advancement of sports under German non-profit law continues to be justified or is in need of reform, also and especially against the background of recent reporting on misconduct by sports clubs or associations.

This article develops a criticism of Alain Badiou's assertion that "mathematics is ontology." I argue that despite appearances to the contrary, Badiou's case for bringing set theory and ontology together is problematic. To arrive at this judgment, I explore how a case for the identification of mathematics and ontology could work. In short, ontology would have to be characterised to make it evident that set theory can contribute to it fundamentally. This is indeed how Badiou proceeds in Being and Event. I review his descriptions of the ontological problematic at some length here, only to argue that set theory is a poor fit. Although philosophers working on questions of being were certainly occupied with matters of oneness and the part-whole relationship, I argue that Badiou's discussion of philosophical sources points towards a mereological treatment, not a set-theoretic one. Finally, I suggest that Badiou's philosophical interpretations of key set-theoretic results are better understood as some sort of analogising between mathematics, ontology, and philosophical anthropology.

The paper begins with a general discussion on hunting. It is divided into four main parts, discussing about the effect of hunting on environment and ecology in Ancient, Medieval, Colonial and Independent India. Across all the ages, hunting wild animals has been an important activity for the royals and nobles. In ancient India, only Ashoka took some initiatives at protecting the animals and environment. The portion on Medieval India mainly focusses on the Mughals and their hunting styles. In the colonial period, mastery over nature was thought of as a part of mastery over India. Both British officials and Indian princes unabatedly shot many animals, which ultimately led to the extinction of cheetah in India. In the part on Independent India, the efforts by Indira Gandhi like the 'Wildlife Protection Act' in 1972, Project Tiger and its effects have been given. In conclusion, the need to conserve our wildlife is briefly cited with reference to a few high-profile cases of hunting in India even after it was outlawed.

For years there has been a lively discussion if there did exist a tradition of intentional mummification in Christian Europe, since hundreds of naturally mummified individuals of a social elite have been found preserved in family- and church crypts. But in most cases well ventilated crypt spaces are the reason for this natural mummification. Besides their dynastic and representative nature, crypts with the well closed coffins were probably understood as spaces of protection for a facilitated resurrection of the body at the day of judgement. Physical resurrection was church-dogmatical from the beginning of Christianity until 20th century and as well a private religious fact. Numerous inscriptions on coffins and crypt walls testify the hope of a "happy resurrection". The believe in resurrection is common for all confessions, though it is probably Protestantism that has promoted burials in crypts. But only the comprehension of the interaction of different social and religious aspects opens the access to the complex "crypt".

Purpose: This study aimed to test the effectiveness of High-Need Community-Dwelling Older Adults Care Delivery Model (HCOACDM) in Taiwan. Methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial with repeated measures design was conducted in eight community care centers, involving 145 high-need older adults who were assigned to the intervention group or comparison group. The HCOACDM was provided over 6 months. Functional ability, quality of life, depressive symptoms, and health care and social service utilizations were measured at baseline, at 3 months, and 6 months into the intervention. The participants' satisfaction was measured at the end of 6-month intervention. Results: Positive effects were shown on all variables in the intervention group at both the 3-month and 6-month intervals (all p < .05). The intervention group had a higher satisfaction with care delivery than the comparison group ( p < .05). Discussion: The promising findings supported a long-term implementation of the HCOACDM as applicable and beneficial.

Hypertension is a non-infectious disease that can cause death. However, this disease has not been resolved properly because it does not show specific symptoms. This service activity aims to educate the elderly about anticipating hypertension independently. Education is carried out promotively by providing counseling and discussion of questions and answers related to hypertension and its dangers; preventively with medical check-up which includes checking blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol accompanied by normal number information and recommended the importance of periodic check-ups, curatively by processing dried petals Rosella flower as antihypertensive herbal tea; rehabilitatively with reframing therapy training to reduce stres levels by changing negative thoughts into positive thoughts. The results of the pre-test and post-test processing showed an increase in average from 54.74 to 84.71, which means that the participants' knowledge about hypertension and its treatment increased. The results of the analysis using paired sample t-test showed that there were significant differences between before and after treatment.
