The legacies of a century of fossil-fuel based development and overconsumption, of treating the environment as a waste sink for industry and agriculture, have left devastating impacts on the earths air, water and land, and these are directly implicated in Climate Change. In response, a number of global institutions and nations, including the European Union and China, have committed themselves to the development of a circular economy. This will require a transformation of todays linear economy of make, use and dispose as the market dictates, into a Circular Economy.The aim of the Circular Economy is to decouple economic growth from resource and energy use through iterative, systemic social, economic and technological reform. This book presents new theoretical and practical insights into this concept, based on case studies from both the developing and developed world, with an emphasis on economic and material transformation, design for reuse and waste reduction, industrial symbiosis(the planned circulation of resources and energy within an industrial setting),and social innovation and entrepreneurship. Four central themes emerge through the essays presented here: theimportance of restorative design in transforming resource flows through both production and consumption, the value of understanding and enumerating wastes in more detail to enable their reuse, the central role of advancing technology and applied science to further this transformation of materials for reuse, and finally, a reconfiguration of design, consumption and retail, so that the present linear economy of make, use and trash can be replaced with a more circular model

This book presents a number of recent developments in demand analysis. These include new, simple data-analytic techniques for analysing consumption data; new tests based on computer simulations for hypothesis testing; new methodological results on how to estimate demand equations; innovative applications to alcohol demand; extensions of the system-wide framework to analyse the effects of advertising on consumption; novel approaches to forecasting consumption patterns; and new theoretical results on aggregation of demand systems over consumers. Consumption in Russia and the former USSR has been lately studied as regards the pre-revolutionary and early Soviet period. The history of Soviet consumption and the Soviet variety of consumerism in the 1950s-1990s has hardly been studied at all. This book concentrates on the late Soviet period but it also considers pre-WWII and even pre-revolutionary times.The book consists of articles, which survey the longue durée of Russian and Soviet consumer attitudes, Soviet ideology of consumption as indicated in texts concerning fashion, the world of Soviet fashion planning and the survival strategies of the Soviet consumer complaining against sub-standard goods and services in a command economy. There's also a case study concerning the uses of concepts with anti-consumerist content. Contributors include: Lena Bogdanova, Olga Gurova, Timo Vihavainen and Larissa Zakharova.

Previous studies that assessed the effects of exchange rate volatility on domestic consumption assumed that the effects are symmetric. In this paper, we argue that due to downward price rigidity, exchange rate volatility could have asymmetric effects on consumption. As in previous research assuming symmetric effects, we only found short-run effects in France and the United States. However, when we assumed the effects to be asymmetric and introduced nonlinear adjustment of the volatility measure, we found short-run asymmetric effects in France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. No substantial long-run effects were found.
