After a brief overview of mainland China's technological development, the author considers what mainland China can offer to Taiwan in respect of technology transfer. He believes that although the time of technology transfers from the mainland is not ripe yet, there are great potentialities for two sides of the Taiwan Strait to undertake vertical work division in scientific and technological development if their economic and political relations can be further improved. After discussing the coastal development strategy of China, the author describes how the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Zhao Ziyang placed the strategy on the policy agenda and secured its approval. Arguments for and against the strategy are analysed and it is examined how the current leadership has dealt with China's foreign trade problems since June 1989. After a rapid privatization of farming during the early 1980s, the average per capita food availability in the PRC surpassed the existential minima by a fairly comfortable margin. However, a closer look at the PRC's farming reveals a number of very important concerns ranging from legal arrangements to agronomic practices. The paper focuses on a group of Chinese academics, teachers and professionals, described here as "May Fourth intelligentsia", who wrote about social problems in China during the 1920s and 1930s. The author notes that the May Fourth intelligentsia held progressive beliefs for their time. Anti-Confucian in their political views, they hoped to reconstruct a new society in which such notions as a greater equality between the sexes would prevail. (DÜI-Sen)

Since the introduction of economic reform in 1978, mainland China has experienced a number of major changes. After highlighting these changes, the author explores the emergence of a mixed economic system as a result of the partial economic reform, problems emerging during the period of economic reform, the "Austerity Policy" of September 1988 and the "Economic Readjustment and Reform Policy" of October 1989 and the future of economic reform. The urban informal sector was born in the less developed countries because urban employment has shown very little fluctuation in spite of the high natural growthrate of population and the large-scale rural-urban migration within the process of industrialization. The author attempts to explain the informal sector of Metro Manila. He points out that the informal markets are not necessarily competitive and proposes an alternative analytical framework in order to understand them better. (DÜI-Sen)

THE AUTHOR USES A DYNAMIC MODEL OF U.S.-CANADIAN TRADE TO SIMULATE THE TRANSITION EFFECTS OF THE CANADA-U.S. FREE TRADE AGREEMENT. THE MODEL SIMULATIONS SUGGEST THAT CANADA'S REAL GDP WILL INCREASE BY ABOUT FOUR PERCENTAGE POINTS OVER A 10-YEAR HORIZON. THE RESULTS ARE SHOWN TO BE SENSITIVE TO ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING THE POSSIBILITY OF U.S. PROTECTIONISM IN THE "BASE CASE" AND THE TARIFF EQUIVALENT OF THE DISPUTE SETTLEMENT MECHANISM CONTAINED IN THE AGREEMENT.

The author presents prospective data from a small-scale study of 15 families experiencing an unmarried teenage pregnancy. During and after the pregnancy, the adolescents and their parents were interviewed separately and responded to standardized instruments. Family members' closeness to, communication with, and opinions about the baby's father were significantly different as a function of family role and stage of the pregnancy. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

Divorce, although a statistical norm, is a developmental trauma to the children involved. This article looks at the two‐camp emotional environment of a divorcing family and its effect on the formation of a child's identity. By examining developmental ages, chosen according to divorce research, the author attempts to show how the interspouse emotional cathexes negatively affect a child's sense of self in ways specific to the child's age at the divorce.

Human service professionals may experience conflict about using their authority and the power that accompanies it when they must reconcile their humanitarian values about practice with requirements and expectations of the environmental context in which they operate. The author suggests that the political and economic environment, gender issues, and the impact of these on the exchange between client and worker are factors that cause uneasiness for practitioners in exercising authority.
