Women fulfill several important roles during their lifetime but in recent years, the productive role of rural women has assumed greater importance. Traditionally, their economic role was confined to work within their homes, home gardens, farma and villages. Today there is an increasing tendency for women to engage in full-time or part-time non-farm occuapations. The objective of this paper is to assess the extent to which incomes of women in traditional tank villages contribute to the provision of food, clothing,shelter, health and educational requirements of their children through in situ and ex situ non-farm employment; highlight some of the conflicts faced by wlmen when they attempt to balance the demands of their multiple roles; identify major issues and suggest suitable recommendations. The sample selected from three traditional villages included: a male headed households in which the husband and wife spend an equal proportion on basic needs facto and de jure female headed households and households with unmarried employed women Accepted ethmographic techniques were used to collect data. Thte study highlighted the urgent need to support diversification of economic activities of rural woman,combat domestic violence, facilitate them to obtain micro credit, acquire skills, and gain access to new opportunities.

The growth of information technology in the business world is spreading at a phenomenal rate. The success of a business organization stands at the usage of IT in their business. Growth of E-Commerce is the new born business method, which has orginated through an extensive usage of IT in their business. SMEs under the BOI in Sri Lanka are far behind the fast moving world of IT. Though E-Commerce is accelerating at a high pace,most of the SMEs are still at the lower level compared to their competitors in business. This study will focus on the level of adoption of E-Commerce in a population of 30 SMEs. The results on the adoption of E-commerce showed a significant relationship with the two firm based characteristics. That is Management Involvement and adoption of IT. The study also identified E-marketing and supplier service as the critical success factors in adoption of E-Commerce. Therefore, this research is conducted to assess the readiness for E-commerce among the SME in Sri Lanka, and hopefully the research will help to convey the awareness among the SME towards ecommerce and help them to speed up their involvement in e-business.

The extensive amount of empirical studies and consequent theorizing associated with the complementizer show the prominence attached to this functional category over the last few decades. Its evolution from an underdetermined status to a 'core functional category' is evident in its syntactic anchoring as a Phase in the current Minimalist approaches. Concurrently with these developments, there have been Cartographic approaches that have attempted to project the complementizer in a different perspective. However, both these approaches, the Minimalist and the Cartographic, have maintained their distinctiveness thus showing less potential for convergence. In this paper I attempt to incorporate Rizzi's (1997) Left Periphery analysis into the Generative framework with evidence from complementizer distribution in Sinhala.

Error correction in ESL (English as a Second Language) classes has been a focal phenomenon in SLA (Second Language Acquisition) research due to some controversial research results and diverse feedback practices. This paper presents a study which explored the relative efficacy of three forms of error correction employed in ESL writing classes: focussing on the acquisition of one grammar element both for immediate and delayed language contexts, and collecting data from university undergraduates, this study employed an experimental research design with a pretest-treatment-posttests structure. The research revealed that the degree of success in acquiring L2 (Second Language) grammar through error correction differs according to the form of the correction and to learning contexts - immediate and delayed contexts. While the findings are discussed in relation to the previous literature, this paper concludes creating a cline of error correction forms to be promoted in Sri Lankan L2 writing contexts, particularly in ESL contexts in Universities.

In less developed countries, both traditional and non-traditional methods of mortality estimation have not been successful in providing complete and accurate information on mortality. To substitute these methods Demographers have tried to develop indirect methods of mortality estimation. For estimating adult mortality two methods based on orphanhood data and widowhood data are being developed. There is a fair literature on the theoretical background and practical application of these methods and by critically reviewing this scattered literature, the suitability and applicability of them can be assessed. The information for the method of widowhood can be collected by asking the simple question "Is your first husband/ wife alive". The proportion can be converted to life table probabilities using model schedules of mortality, fertility, and nuptiality. The robustness of the method depends largely of the assumptions of the method. Some assumptions are not crucial. However the assumption on the independent of the mortality risks of respondent and spouse should be examined critically. Further development of the method should be carried out using computer simulation rather than depending on plausible estimates achieved by application of the method.

The objectives of this paper is to examine the factors behind the formation and expansion of pupblic enterprises in Sri Lanka. The public enterprises which established before independence were maintained and expanded by the two major parties, the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) during the period 1948-77. These two parties had different party ideologies, but they were committed to maintain and to develop these ventures druing this era due to the influence of the Keynesian welfare state ideology. Meanwhile, this process has been reversed after 1977 due to the influence of a new state ideology, Market-oriented state ideology. This paper attempts to examine the role of the public-owned enterprises in post-independence Sri Lanka by employing the concept of the state ideology.

Attitude Towards Family Size, Sex Preference, Decision-Making and Family Planning in Sri Lanka

This paper has attempted to make a preliminary srudy of lexical errors of adult learners of English with a view to finding out the following: i) the type of lexical errors learners make ii) how these errors can be explained iii) to what extent these errors affect effective communication with regard to the first aim different types of errors such as errors of retrival, speech perception, sense relations, LI influence etc, were found in the data. with regard to the second aim it was found that most of these lexical errors were due to learners' incomplete knowledge of a word and some were due to LI transfer, mainly as a result of using bilingual dictionries. It was found that though most of these errors did not affect comunication, they need to be corrected before they become fossilised.

This inscription which can be traced paleographically to the 9-10th centuries AC throws some light on the life style of the monks of the Abhayagiri monastery during the period. It also enables us to arrive at the correct meaning of a few words found in the ancient Sinhals Buddhist texts. Moreevr this inscription helps us to indentify a type of building found in Buddhist monasteries of the Anuradhapura period, but for what purpose that was used was not known earlier. The identification of the buildign and the meaning of the word nisawatta will be discussed in this article. The old Sinhala worlds nisawatta has been given different meanings by Sinhala scholars. It will be shown that a more accurate meaning to this word could be found int the interpretation of this inscription. As two letters in this inscription were not clear it was with some effort that they were deciphered. This inscription of one sentence contins an instruction, In the absence of syntactical separation of words and phrases, the sentence had to be reconstructed for easy reading, understanding and translation.
