Argues that the medicalisation of negative emotions is reshaping our ability to act politicallyProvides the first sustained analysis of how the increasing tendency to think and talk about negative emotions in terms of mental disorder affects our ability to take political actionPresents, analyses and compares case studies of individuals who have faced obstacles related to perceptions of their emotional and mental fitness for public life, ranging from psychiatric service-user activists to Brexit protesters Complements Foucauldian studies of medicalisation by drawing on Hannah Arendt to reveal how medicalisation impacts political agencyEnriches and contests existing interpretations of ArendtThis book explores negative emotions like anger, fear and grief as important drivers of political action. It examines how treating these feelings as medical problems affects society. Drawing on the political thought of Hannah Arendt, the book develops an original understanding of political emotions as fragile and vulnerable to attacks disputing their relevance to public life. It presents and analyses four case studies of emotional politics in the UK, ranging from assertions that UKIP supporters were emotionally primitive to diagnoses of anxiety disorder in the Brexit referendum's aftermath. It demonstrates how ideas of emotion and mental disorder might be used to both empower and disempower people politically

Some agricultural or rural protest groups in the Western world evolved into political parties - often of a populist nature - whereas others did not. This book is the first to explore under which conditions this happens, and to what extent current populist parties have agricultural or rural ties and related agendas. Well-known authors with a background in rural studies or in political sciences describe and analyse the situation in a number of Western countries (the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, Australia, Finland). The contributions in this book show that the accessibility and responsiveness of the political system and the institutionalized agrarian interest groups, as well as the existing political landscape, are influencing the decisions of rural protest groups to found a political party. However, nowadays the chances of these parties being successful are small due to the declining share of the agricultural sector within European societies. Although there will always be grounds for agrarian protest, it seems safe to say that the heyday of agrarian populism is over

The article examines the phenomenon of political correctness in American political discourse. The focus of the study is to assess the effectiveness of using politically correct vocabulary by representatives of American political circles. During the study of this problem various theories of justification of political correctness were considered both in the works of Ukrainian and foreign scientists. The concept of «political correctness» has been defined in the article, the origin of this phenomenon in the US and in countries of Western Europe has been substantiated. The reasons for the emergence of the phenomenon of political correctness in America have been highlighted and the arguments for and against the phenomenon of the functioning of political correctness in American society, in particular due to the analysis of the statements of famous linguists and media criticism, have been revealed. Examples of typical politically correct units created as a result of replacing their previous «wrong» counterparts have been given. The phenomenon of euphemism has been explored and the effectiveness of the use of the euphemistic units in the speeches and appeals of well-known American politicians, namely Joe Biden and Barack Obama have been demonstrated. The main factors determining the phenomenon of euphemism during political speeches have been singled out. The article also contains examples of maintaining and ignoring the rules of political correctness by representatives of the American political elite, in particular, the acting President of the United States, Donald Trump.

This paper examines the common traits of the "new fiction" being written in Central America since the early 1970s. By examining three novels of Roque Dalton, Sergio Ramirez, and Marcos Carias, respectively, it seeks to explore how and why this fiction portrays the societies and political crises of the region in a very original way. This phenomenon will be placed in the context of the political role that Central American writers have played in the history of the region.

Some useful simplification of the theory of political mobilization is achieved by treating the ideology of a mobilizing agent as an innovation. The process of political mobilization is then treated as a process of innovation diffusion. This perspective allows the development of the necessary linkage between the micro- & macro-level components of the process. The theory is tested using extended time series for seven societies -- the US, UK, Sweden, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, the USSR, & the People's Republic of China -- & is supported. 8 Tables, 7 Figures, 1 Appendix, 16 References. Sustainability science probes interactions between global, social, and human systems, the complex mechanisms that lead to degradation of these systems, and concomitant risks to human well-being. As a transdisciplinary academic discipline, it can point the way to a sustainable global society by identifying and addressing complex challenges that traditional academic disciplines have not addressed. As it can no longer be considered a new field, it is the right time to take stock of what we have learned in recent sustainability science research, and how to apply this to the sustainability challenge of our time, which is the success of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs combine efforts to eradicate poverty and increase the development of poor countries with decreasing the human footprint on the environment. They will take a more inclusive and diverse approach by mobilizing actors in both developed and developing countries. Now serious sustainable development problems dominate policy discussion in many countries, but with little actual results in terms of complex global environmental problems like climate change. Where progress in social indicators is made, it often comes at an environmental cost. Inter-linkages across different goals will be a challenging area of research, and the inherent trade-offs and complexity of such an effort require that related policies be informed by a science of sustainability. New accounting measures will be required to monitor implementation of SDGs, such as with an inclusive index of well-being by including natural and human capital as well as manufactured capital into national accounts. The SDGs and progressively more inclusive accounting methods are a response to the rather narrow focus on economic growth that creates inequality and undermines sustainability, and there is a need for research into how measuring wealth inclusively can support SDG implementation. This special issue presents a critical analysis of the SDGs from the perspective of how the science community can best contribute to their implementation through scenario analysis, stakeholder partnerships, regional analyses, and ultimately policy impact. & Osamu Saito saito@unu.edu
