The world over, clusters are home to leading firms and institutions that compete on the edge of technology. They can be found in developed and developing countries alike and comprise such famous ones as Silicon Valley, London 's financial center, ceramic tile and fashion in north Italy, wine in Bordeaux, automotive in Stuttgart and Munich, software in Bangalore, and manufacturing in China 's Pearl-river delta. Today they are studied by a variety of scholars from different fields including economists, social scientists, and strategists, but also by a growing number of business practitioners and policy makers.3 As a result, knowledge on the capacity of clusters to promote regional economic development and national prosperity and the role of local industrial policy in creating new clusters has increased rapidly in recent years The present research is best described as being exploratory in nature. It elaborates and extends existing theory. By doing so, it takes up a distinct position within scientific theory that is defined by three levels of analysis: (1) the meta-methodological level, (2) the methodological level, and (3) the theoretical level. This book collects three outstanding examples of the work of Mexican biologist Alfonso Luis Herrera (1868-1942), a pioneer in experimental origins of life research. Two of the collected works appear here in English for the first time. Herrera's works represent the attempt to deal experimentally with the issue of an autotrophic origin of life, a possibility that was widely accepted prior to Alexander I. Oparin's ideas regarding the possibility of organic synthesis and the origin of life in an early Earth environment. An active promoter of Darwinian ideas in Latin America, Herrera was also among the first 20th century researchers to attempt to "create life in a test tube." This collection shows the remarkable prescience of researchers in Mexico with regards to laboratory approaches to the problem of the origin of life. It also includes a modern commentary by researchers actively engaged in research in prebiotic evolution and the origins of life, and deeply concerned with the historical development of ideas in these fields. The list includes H. James Cleaves, Antonio Lazcano, Ismael Ledesma Mateos, Alicia Negrón-Mendoza, Juli Peretó and Ervin Silva, who discuss in detail the relevance of Herrera's ideas to modern theory and their historical context. Background Hypertension-related knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of hypertensive patients can affect the awareness, treatment and control of hypertension. However, little attention has been paid to the association between the change of hypertension preventive KAP and blood pressure (BP) control in occupational population using longitudinal data. We assess the effectiveness of a workplace-based multicomponent hypertension intervention program on improving the level of KAP of hypertension prevention, and the association between improvement in KAP and BP control during intervention. Methods From January 2013 to December 2014, workplaces across 20 urban regions in China were randomized to either the intervention group (n = 40) or control group (n = 20) using a cluster randomized control method. All employees in each workplace were asked to complete a cross-sectional survey to screen for hypertension patients. Hypertension patients in the intervention group were given a 2-year workplace-based multicomponent hypertension intervention for BP control. The level of hypertension prevention KAP and BP were assessed before and after intervention in the two groups. Results Overall, 3331 participants (2658 in the intervention group and 673 in the control group) were included (mean [standard deviation] age, 46.2 [7.7] years; 2723 men [81.7%]). After 2-year intervention, the KAP qualified rate was 63.2% in the intervention groups and 50.1% in the control groups (odds ratio = 1.65, 95% CI, 1.36∼2.00, P < .001). Compared with the control group decreased in the qualified rate of each item of hypertension preventive KAP questionnaire, all the items in the intervention group increased to different degrees. The increase of KAP score was associated with the decrease of BP level after intervention. For 1 point increase in KAP score, systolic blood pressure (SBP) decreased by .28 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreased by .14 mmHg [SBP: β = -.28, 95%CI: −.48∼-.09, P = .004; DBP: β = −.14, 95%CI: −.26∼-.02, P = .024]. SBP and DBP was significantly in manual labor workers (SBP: β = −.34, 95%CI: −.59∼-.09, P = .008; DBP: β = −.23, 95%CI: −.38∼−.08, P = .003), workers from private enterprise, state-owned enterprise (SOE) (SBP: β = −.40, 95%CI: −.64∼−.16, P = .001; DBP: β = −.21, 95%CI: −.36∼−.06, P = .005) and a workplace with an affiliated hospital (SBP: β = −.31, 95%CI: −.52∼−.11, P = .003; DBP: β = −.16, 95%CI: −.28∼−.03, P = .016). The improvement of knowledge (SBP: β = −.29, 95%CI: −.56∼−.02, P = .038; DBP: β = −.12, 95%CI: −.29∼.05, P = .160), as well as attitude (SBP: β = −.71, 95%CI: −1.25∼−.18, P = .009; DBP: β = .18, 95%CI: −.23∼.59, P = .385) and behavior (SBP: β = −.73, 95%CI: −1.22∼−.23, P = .004; DBP: β = −.65, 95%CI: −.97∼−.33, P < .001) was gradually strengthened in relation to BP control. Conclusion This study found that workplace-based multicomponent hypertension intervention can effectively improve the level of hypertension preventive KAP among employees, and the improvement of KAP levels were significantly associated with BP control. PurposeThere have been increasing calls for social studies educators to engage issues of sustainability. Proponents argue that the very survival of the planet depends on the degree to which teachers can move learners away from unsustainable beliefs and behaviors to those grounded in interdisciplinary approaches to solving community and global challenges. How to implement this vision of sustainability education? The purpose of the paper is to report the results of teacher-educators' curriculum and pedagogical approaches to implement the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) C3 framework to engage and empower prospective and practicing teachers to teach for a sustainable future.Design/methodology/approachThe study is guided by the growing field of self-study in teacher education, a type of research undertaken by teacher-educators with the dual purpose of personal professional development and a deep understanding of teacher-education practices. Most data were derived from multiple, recursive conversations (both formal and informal) around curriculum decisions and pedagogical choices to integrate sustainability issues into teacher-education courses. Additional data sources include classroom lecture notes and PowerPoint presentations, course readings and resources.FindingsThe authors' three years of collaborative work has shown that an issues-centered, interdisciplinary approach to select and integrate global issues, the current event article analysis, young adult literature and discussion and deliberation of local sustainable development issues that are some of the most effective pedagogical tools to engage and empower teacher candidates in learning about issues that affect the sustainable development of global community. The NCSS C3 provides a powerful framework to scaffold the process of analyzing sustainable issues while also teaching social studies curriculum and standards and skills.Originality/valueScholars of global education have called for shifting from an anthropocentric philosophy to a bio-centric worldview emphasizing the embeddedness of humans within the environment. This paper attempts to describe the present situation in the women's movement in Serbia and Montenegro and to tackle questions about its future, on the basis of a sociological study of newly formed women's groups. In the past, the women's movement in these societies has surged several times, only to be completely annulled, and its proponents falling to oblivion. Now, for the first time ever, the seeds of the movement originating from the long gone period of the socialist regime in Yugoslavia have survived the turmoil of disintegration and wars, and are germinating as women's groups and networks spring up alongside are being formed. The crucial task for the future will be strengthening this fragile and diffused network structure and laying down solid foundations for a movement with proper institutional mechanisms on a nation/state level. This investigation examined the prerequisites for this: firstly by examining the visibility and distinguishing features of women's groups and their activities in their current local environment; and secondly, by assessing activists' clear acceptance of feminist (and their groups') self-determination, which confront existing social attitudes towards feminist identities. In both respects, considerable advances towards a broader and clearer recognition of the aims and essence of women's groups' activities are identified, in spite of the ever-present traditional and ideological resistance to this type of women's engagement.

Air force ground crew personnel are potentially exposed to fuels and lubricants, as raw materials, vapours and combustion exhaust emissions, during operation and maintenance of aircrafts. This study investigated exposure levels and biomarkers of effects for employees at a Danish air force military base. We enrolled self-reported healthy and non-smoking employees (n = 79) and grouped them by exposure based on job function, considered to be potentially exposed (aircraft engineers, crew chiefs, fuel operators and munition specialists) or as reference group with minimal occupational exposure (avionics and office workers). We measured exposure levels to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) by silicone bands and skin wipes (PAHs only) as well as urinary excretion of PAH metabolites (OH-PAHs). Additionally, we assessed exposure levels of ultrafine particles (UFPs) in the breathing zone for specific job functions. As biomarkers of effect, we assessed lung function, plasma levels of acute phase inflammatory markers, and genetic damage levels in peripheral blood cells. Exposure levels of total PAHs, OPEs and OH-PAHs did not differ between exposure groups or job functions, with low correlations between PAHs in different matrices. Among the measured job functions, the UFP levels were higher for the crew chiefs. The exposure level of the PAH fluorene was significantly higher for the exposed group than the reference group (15.9 ± 23.7 ng/g per 24 h vs 5.28 ± 7.87 ng/g per 24 h, p = 0.007), as was the OPE triphenyl phosphate (305 ± 606 vs 19.7 ± 33.8 ng/g per 24 h, p = 0.011). The OPE tris(1,3-dichlor-2-propyl)phosphate had a higher mean in the exposed group (60.7 ± 135 ng/g per 24 h) compared to the reference group (8.89 ± 15.7 ng/g per 24 h) but did not reach significance. No evidence of effects for biomarkers of systemic inflammation, genetic damage or lung function was found. IntroductionDue to various regulatory barriers, it is increasingly difficult to move pseudonymised routine health data across platforms and among jurisdictions. To tackle this challenge, we summarized five approaches considered to support a scientific research project focused on the risk of the new non-vitamin K Target Specific Oral Anticoagulants (TSOACs) and collaborated between the Farr institute in Wales and Scotland.
ApproachIn Wales, routinely collected health records held in the Secure Anonymous Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank were used to identify the study cohort. In Scotland, data was extracted from national dataset resources administered by the eData Research & Innovation Service (eDRIS) and stored in the Scottish National Data Safe Haven. We adopted a federated data and multiple analysts approach, but arranged simultaneous accesses for Welsh and Scottish analysts to generate study cohorts separately by implementing the same algorithm. Our study cohort across two countries was boosted to 6,829 patients towards risk analysis. Source datasets and data types applied to generate cohorts were reviewed and compared by analysts based on both sites to ensure the consistency and harmonised output.
DiscussionThis project used a fusion of two approaches among five considered. The approach we adopted is a simple, yet efficient and cost-effective method to ensure consistency in analysis and coherence with multiple governance systems. It has limitations and potentials of extending and scaling. It can also be considered as an initialisation of a developing infrastructure to support a distributed team science approach to research using Electronic Health Records (EHRs) across the UK and more widely.

The study explored parents, teachers, and students' beliefs about the use and study of mother tongue (MT) in selected secondary schools in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted. Twelve public senior secondary schools were randomly selected. Purposive sampling technique was used to select at least 15 literate parents, 12 teachers from different subject areas, and 20 students from each school. Overall, 211 literate parents, 195 teachers and 237 SSII students participated. Three instruments used were: Parents' Questionnaire (r=0.87), Teachers' Questionnaire (r=0.90) and Students' Questionnaire (r=0.87). Data were analysed using frequency count, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Results show that parents, teachers and students have strong beliefs that using the MT to teach will facilitate the learning of English and other subjects and enhance participation in lessons. They also believe that studying the MT as a school subject would promote students' sense of identity and positive attitude towards the Nigerian culture. Students believe that the MT remains the best language to learn with. The study has shown that the participants have strong beliefs about the pedagogical and sociocultural relevance of the MT in education. There is a positive indication that the main stakeholders (parents, teachers and students) are ready to embrace the study of MT as a subject in the secondary school. It is therefore recommended that the governments should endeavour to invest in the development of the orthographies of the Nigerian languages to make them usable in education.

Several variables are widely regarded as affecting the shippers' transportation choice process. Early analyses of transportation choice by Meyer et and by Friedlaender emphasised rates and inventory costs as important determinants of transportation choice. Later, Ballou and DeHayes discussed the effect of transportation reliability on inventory levels, particularly that variation in delivery times increases inventory levels even when average delivery time remains constant. The Baumol and Vinod model of transportation choice considered freight rates, speed, reliability (variance in speed) as well as loss and damage. Finally, Neuschel recognised the logistics concept requires that the economics of transportation must be balanced with company policies and customer considerations such as manufacturing, warehousing, and customer service.

This article is study of sport club representatives' considerations about the work of sport clubs. Sport clubs are first and foremost providers of sport activity. However, when it came to the work of sport clubs, it is discovered that the focus is on competitiveness, but sport clubs were also seen as a vehicle for promotion of 'social goods' such as health. Based on documentary analysis, observations and interviews with board members of sport clubs, and with a neo-institutional perspective of translation, this article discusses how local agents combine different institutional elements such as competitiveness and health and assemble them into a wholeness of sport activity. Without claiming to have found the final solution to this complex phenomenon, the article discusses whether health is utilized — or exploited — for legislation purposes only, or whether it can be combined with competitiveness.

Within Eighth Amendment doctrine, legislators are arbiters of contemporary values. The United States Supreme Court looks closely to state and federal death penalty legislation to determine whether a given punishment is out of keeping with "evolving standards of decency." Those who draft, debate, and vote on death penalty laws thus participate in both ordinary and higher lawmaking. This Article investigates this dual role. We coded and aggregated information about every floor statement made in the legislative debates preceding the recent passage of bills abolishing the death penalty in Connecticut, Illinois, and Nebraska. We categorized all statements according to their position on the death penalty, their subject matter, and any references they made to the courts and Constitution. We also collected basic facts about the legislators, including about political party, race, education, and profession. We present our quantitative and qualitative findings here. Building upon these findings, we critically examine the Court's use of legislation as an "objective indicator" of "evolving standards of decency." We identify disconnects between legislative outcomes and community "standards of decency," and we analyze legislators' understanding of their constitutional significance and why their level of self-awareness may matter. Finally, we consider how legislative debates—rather than outcomes alone—might provide insights into contemporary values. In particular, the strong concern we observed over wrongful execution may support more robust Eighth Amendment protections for those claiming actual innocence.

Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) using a Deuterium-Deuterium (D-D) neutron generator, is one of the most promising method to detect explosives and illicit substances. Using Monte Carlo methods with MCNP6 code, a model of a DD Generator (DD-110 Adelphi Technology [1]) has been built with one or two NaI(Tl) detectors of 1.5" x 1" size in order to determine an optimal configuration. Several calculations have been performed to analyse the detection power for samples of different explosives: RDX, Ammonium Nitrate, land mines, military and homemade explosives, have been selected. Different models have been made varying moderator and shielding thicknesses (polyethylene and lead) and we conclude that the configuration with 10 cm thickness of polyethylene, is the best configuration to obtain a neutron thermal flux appropriate for detection of these simulated samples of explosives
