Reports on an international symposium, "Social Sciences and AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) in Africa," held Nov 1996 in Sali Portudal, Senegal. The conference brought together English- & French-speaking researchers & AIDS activists working in various sub-Saharan countries. Central themes included the relationship between the spread of AIDS & geographic mobility, demographic correlates of AIDS in Africa, the need for better social science research to inform prevention & treatment, the relationship between research & advocacy, the ethics of AIDS research, & indigenous interpretations of AIDS. It is concluded that such symposiums reinforce participants' sense of purpose & allow evaluation of methodologies & resource allocation. 18 References. E. Blackwell

Determining the ethnic differences in academic performance among immigrant students is important in terms of adapting them into the system they live in. Examining the variables related to students' performance will be a guide in overcoming the issue. The purpose of this study is to examine the direct effect of economic, social, and cultural status (ESCS) on science performance and the indirect effect of ESCS on the relationship between science dispositions and science literacy in Canadian immigrant students using hierarchical linear modeling. Data were obtained from Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 science literacy test and student questionnaire and data sets were provided from the official website of PISA. The results of the research show that ESCS had a direct and indirect effect through science dispositions with medium to large on science performance of immigrant students. The impacts of significant variables were discussed and implications for further research were provided.
Purpose of the research is to analyse what variables influence subjective well-being (which is measured as overall life satisfaction in the EU) and how it affects population's decisions on emigration. Research methodology – a correlation between several independent variables and overall life satisfaction is calculated. Then, a correlation between overall life satisfaction and emigration rates is measured. Finally, regression equations are constructed showing how some variables affect the other. Findings – analysis helped to identify key variables which influenced overall life satisfaction and its impact on population's decisions on emigration. Those key variables include GDP per capita, income inequality and unemployment. Research limitations – to analyse more social phenomena and not only the economic ones would contribute to research development in the future. Moreover, analysis of dynamic aspects would provide deeper insight of relationships. Practical implications – the analysis of emigration problem and the identification of its possible links with life satisfaction will allow economists to assess a priori potential of various measures suggested in practice and, consequently, will allow for more targeted formulation of the economic policy. Originality/Value – scientific analysis of life satisfaction enables to have a new look on emigration problem in theory and practice.

This essay proposes ways to improve editorial evaluations of manuscripts and to make published research more reliable and trustworthy. It points to troublesome properties of current editorial practices and suggests that editorial evaluations could become more reliable by making more allowance for reviewers' human limitations. The essay also identifies some troublesome properties of prevalent methodology, such as statistical significance tests, HARKing, and p-Hacking, and proposes editorial policies to mitigate these detrimental behaviors.
