This paper describes the use and application of environmental criminology and social science methods in court cases involving allegations of negligent security. Negligent security is an area of premises liability that involves claims against business owners for damages or injuries on their property due to a lack of security precautions against reasonably foreseeable criminal actions. For decades, courts have embraced the view that the "place or character" of a business may invite criminal conduct and various jurisdictions have asserted that business owners may be under a duty to protect patrons against third-party criminal conduct. Yet, courts have struggled to define precisely how the place or character of a business would make a crime reasonably foreseeable. The paper explains the ways in which courts utilize crime and noncrime data in negligent security cases and discusses the affinities between environmental criminology and expert evidence in the courts. In doing so, the paper highlights the practical application, legal utility, and explanatory power of criminological theories and social science knowledge in the U.S. civil court system.

New guidelines implemented by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services exempt broad categories of social science research from regulation by university review boards. The analysis examines how exemption from regulation will change the way researchers manage ethical matters in the future. Social scientists will wish to protect the rights of research subjects and, at the same time, study sensitive social issues by scientific designs. As in the past, these goals will be incompatible in various ways. The analysis examines the parameters within which researchers will deal with several ethical and methodological dilemmas.

Relevance. Quality problems have been relevant for many centuries. At the same time, quality is viewed from the perspective of various sciences and industries indirectly: as a category identified with any sphere. Quality management is also of interest to many scientists and specialists, but most often in the technical or economic sphere. At the same time, its social aspect is obvious. Moreover, in the context of social management (social) quality management is an effective tool aimed at ensuring and improving the quality of life. However, despite the widespread application and adaptation of (social) quality management in various fields of science and practice, philosophical understanding is presented quite selectively. In this regard, in this study, it is advisable to present social quality management from the perspective of philosophy and methodology of science.Purpose. In the work, the author sets himself the purpose of conducting a comprehensive analysis of social quality management from a philosophical and methodological perspective.Objectives. To achieve this goal, it is relevant to solve the following tasks: analysis of social quality management as a post-non-classical concept of the philosophy of complexity; assessment and interpretation of social quality management in a broad plane of humanitarianism; attempt to define the philosophical understanding of social quality management.Methodology. To achieve this goal, the author uses in his work such methods and methodologies as the theory of complexity (complexity), the semiotic-digital dimension, and the methodology for constructing sociotechnical landscapes of digital reality. Results. The paper presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of social quality management from a philosophical and methodological perspective.Conclusions. Based on the results of the study, the author's understanding of social quality management in a philosophical and methodological context is substantiated; social quality management is presented as a concept of the complexity paradigm; the interrelationships of social quality management and the sociotechnical landscape of digital reality in a single field of modern humanities are established.
Why do the UK and US disproportionately incarcerate the mentally ill, frequently poor people of color? Via multiple re-framings of the question—theological, socioeconomic, and psychological— Andrew Skotnicki diagnoses a persecution of the prophetic at the heart of the contemporary criminal justice system. This interdisciplinary book draws on criminology, theology, philosophy, sociology, psychology, and psychiatric history to consider the increasingly intractable issue of mass incarceration. Inviting a new, collaborative conversation on penal reform as a fundamentally life-affirming project, it defends the dignity of those diagnosed as mentally unstable and their capacity for spiritual transcendence
Psychologists and correctional rehabilitation specialists in the Psychological and Correctional Rehabilitation Division of the Singapore Prison Service have been instrumental in designing and delivering the rehabilitation work with offenders. This book seeks to capture these experiences in the area of rehabilitation, and the anecdotal experiences working with different groups of offenders on the ground. It provides a first-hand look at the application of offender rehabilitation principles in practice. It also provides details on the experiences and challenges of working in a correctional context through the anecdotal sharing. To this end, the book aims to provide a practical and practitioner lens, overlaid with theoretical concepts, to the practice of correctional rehabilitation. While there have been experiences and insights documented, this will be the first book that documents the anecdotal experiences in Singapore Prison Service
