Russia - Australia: 65 Years of Diplomatic Relations
In: International affairs: a Russian journal of world politics, diplomacy and international relations, Band 53, Heft 6, S. 105-112

After a review of historic friendly incidents & contacts between Russia & Australia during the 19th century, the article starts of anew from the beginning of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1942, mentioning the Sheepskins for Russia campaign in WWII & different bilateral agreements. Over the subsequent 40 years, Soviet-Australian ties were developing far from smoothly, caused by ideological differences & diametric approaches toward regional problems (Indochina in particular). From the second half of the 1980's, following the impact of positive global developments, the two countries became increasingly interested in advancing their political, trade & economical ties, mainly through a liberation from old ideological stereotypes. Today, Russian-Australian relations are developing quite dynamically, in which a broad range of global problems is discussed, through a common vision of ways for effectively countering strategic stability, international terrorism, liberalization of trade & nuclear nonproliferation programs. Concluding that 200 years of bilateral relations have formed a sound foundation for mutually beneficial ties between Russia & Australia in the realms of political, economic, scientific-technical & technological cooperation, thus making of Australia an important & promising partner in the Asia Pacific region.
