; The present dissertation analyses the process of the globalisation of Islam with a special focus on the time period between the pre-Islamic era and the Reconquista. At the very beginning prophet Muhammad only wanted to spread the Islamic faith after receiving revelations from the archangel Gabriel. After migrating to Medina, Muhammad, however, developed a powerful position as the spiritual and political leader of the Islamic religious community and started expanding Islam by means of war. When Muhammad died in 632 the Muslim community was split into Shias followers of the prophets direct line and Sunnis the clear majority striving for a caliph from the Quraysh line, the nobility of Mecca. The conflict between Sunnis and Shias has lasted up to the present day and brought about fundamental changes in the areas conquered by the Muslims. Even at the time of Alis death in 661, who was the cousin of the phrophet and husband of his daughter Fatima, it can already be observed that the split of the Islamic Umma only had political reasons. The conflict between the powerful clan of the Umayyads and the direct descendants of the prophets family was not about theological issues, but about the claim to leadership and power in the newly being founded Islamic Empire. The north of Africa was finally conquered during the reign of the Umayyad Abd al-Malik (685-705).Even though the Umayyads lost power and the dynasty of the Abbasids started to take over, the Umayyads managed to establish a long-lasting caliphat on the Iberian Peninsula in 756, which survived for more than seven hundred years. Irrigation technology and new crop from the area of Euphrates and Tigris lead to a agricultural revolution on the Iberian Peninsula. Many Islamic buildings in the Mudéjar style can be still admired today. Thus, history has been shaped by its Islamic heritage. ; eingereicht von Dr. med.uni. Mag. phil.

"Islam through Objects represents the state of the field of Islamic material cultural studies. With contributions from scholars of religion, anthropologists, art historians, folklorists, historians, and other disciplines, Anna Bigelow brings together a wide range of perspectives on Islamic materiality to debunk myths of Islamic aversion to material aspects of religion. Each chapter focuses on a single object in daily use by Muslims - prayer beads, coins, amulets, a cistern well, clothing, jewellery, bodily and domestic adornments - to consider both generic and particular aspects of the object in question. These narratives will engage the reader by describing and analyzing each object in terms of its provenance, materials, uses, and history, as well as the broader history, variety and uses of the object in Islamic history and cultures. Temporal, regional, and sectarian variations in the styles, uses, and theological perspectives are also considered. Framed by an introduction that assesses the various approaches to Islamic material culture in recent scholarship, Islam through Objects provides a template for the study of religion and material culture, which engages current theory, subtle and nuanced narratives, and the creative and imaginal capacities of Muslims through history"--
This study aimed at finding the existence of moderate Islam in the dynamics of Islamic politics in Indonesia after "Aksi Bela Islam". The focus of this paper comes from two questions. First, How is the Historicity of the "Aksi Bela Islam 212"? Second, how is the relationship between moderate Islam and "Aksi Bela Islam"? This paper was a literature study which was supported by relevant references. The writer used a historical approach in this study. The results of this study showed that; First, the historicity of the "Aksi Bela Islam" does not stand alone, but it was supported by other preceded histories. One of them comes from the jealousy of some Islamic groups towards Jakarta which was controlled by non-Muslims. However, the most important thing was that "Aksi Bela Islam" tended to have strategic efforts in organizing political power as a "movement from below" to bind the public to conservatism as well as building political power through government opposition. Second, NU and Muhammadiyah as a group of "moderate Islam" have contributed to the amount of community participation and interest in the "Aksi Bela Islam", as a result of the lack of firmness of the two CSOs in responding to blasphemy or "Aksi Bela Islam".
On the conception of Islam as communicated by Orientalists and Islamists, the lack of reflective conceptions, the communication of the militant aspect of Islam as a whole, while it concerns only individual groups, the political and socio-economical influence as perceived by the people of many Muslim countries, especially among its younger populations, the role of Saudi Arabia, the interpretation of the Quran vs. the interpretation of the Bible, global capitalism and its influence on religion in Islamic countries and the Islam as the new bogeyman of the Western world. This article discusses two faces of Islam, political and cultural, which have developed throughout the Muslim world, including in Indonesia. It argues that political Islam has two faces and both of which, although represented by two different groups, have the same agendas, i.e., the application by the state of shari'a, and also the establishment of Islamic state. Arguing that political Islam has brought about radicalism, the article proposes that the other face of Islam, that is cultural Islam, should be maintained and empowered.
(ICB)
