Does sexual orientation and gender identity matter at election time? While previous literature has explored the effect of candidate gender and ethnicity on electoral results, this is the first study to quantitatively investigate the impact of sexual orientation. We build an original dataset combining individual-level data on more than 3,000 candidates in the 2015 UK election with sociodemographic indicators at the constituency level. In addition to sexual orientation and other demographic characteristics, we include candidate education, political experience, and campaign spending. We find that LGBT candidates generally do not have a negative impact on party vote share. Even in more conservative environments, LGBT candidates perform at least as well as their straight counterparts. This work is important to understand the consequences of descriptive representation and, relatedly, how rapid social change happens.

The legacy of a colonial past marked by violence and oppression still inluences sexual politics on the Caribbean Islands. he absence of laws to protect lgbt citizens together with irmly rooted heteronormative structures make the islands an inhospitable place for those who do not comply with the rules, reinforcing the idea of Caribbean lgbts as virtually inexistent. In Valmiki's Daughter shani mootoo uses literary representation to break "the silence about sexuality and nonnormalizing desire". he novel underscores the sexual diversity of individuals situated inside a region that has been perceived as primarily heterosexual, a perception that needs to be deconstructed. however, mootoo implicitly acknowledges the constricted space for individuals that do not abide by compulsory heterosexuality, attesting the power of discursive processes and practices that still regulate bodies, genders and desires.

Porn is so safe; everything is inscribed in a master plan. Like a drug designed to consume entertainment and to be back to work in time, pornography allows you to be at ease in the corner of your world. Through masturbatory micro-rituals, it reaffirms all Western societies values. Back when Pluto was a planet, pushed by the advent of digital technology, a lightning ripped through the grey sky of this boredom valley. In the historical period between the nineties and the two-thousands, pushed by the possibilities of digital communication, a new body front emerged as theoretical and activist battleground, deconstructing the dogmatic anti-sexwork positions of historical feminism and LGBT-identities. "Porn Studies" came out as an open, multidisciplinary field, mixing Queer Theory, Gender Studies, Media Studies, Cinema History and Performance Art. One of the main goals stands in the use of pornography as text, in which to read and to deconstruct identity boundaries where either heteronormative or LGBT-gentrifying politics produce a flat market space. The application of D.I.Y.-ethics to "Porn Studies" moved the thought to a political and activist level through the practices of self- representation and cultural individualization.

Resumen. Este artículo realiza un análisis histórico de la producción intelectual chilena en torno a la homosexualidad y constata una permanencia del paradigma medicalizador, verificable hasta la actualidad. Tal paradigma, su conceptualización y representación, además de influenciar imaginarios sociales, dan lugar a la homofobia y a las dificultades para introducir reformas pro derechos de la comunidad LGBT. Sus antecedentes inmediatos se encuentran en el higienismo y en intentos modernizadores acaecidos en Chile durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Dicho paradigma habría transitado en Chile por cuatro momentos: un período de instalación; otro de predominio de la interpretación psicoanalítica; un tercero de hegemonía del método fenomenológico; y finalmente un período de apologética medicalizadora, años, coincidente con la vuelta a la democracia, la irrupción de los movimientos LGBT organizados y las reivindicaciones de derechos para las personas LGBT.Palabras clave: Chile; homosexualidad; medicalizaciónConfiguração da homossexualidade medicalizada no ChileResumo. In this article, a historical analysis of Chilean intellectual production about homosexuality indicates the permanence of a medicalized paradigm, verifiable up to the present. The conceptualization and representation of such paradigm influences the collective imagination, explaining and legitimizing homophobia and difficulties in introducing reforms to grant rights to the LGBT community. Its immediate background is found in hygienist, modernizing programs in the early 20th Century. The medicalization of homosexuality in Chile can be divided in four periods: its implantation; the predominance of a psychoanalytic interpretation; hegemony of the phenomenological method; and, finally, medicalized apologetics. The latter coincides with the period of re-democratization, and the emergence of LGBT organized movements and LGBT rights.Keywords: Chile; medicalization; homosexuality

This book explores, through specific analysis of media representations, personal interviews, and historical research, how the digital environment perpetuates harmful and limiting stereotypes of queerness. Siebler argues that heteronormativity has co-opted queer representations, largely in order to sell goods, surgeries, and lifestyles, reinforcing instead of disrupting the masculine and feminine heterosexual binaries through capitalist consumption. Learning Queer Identity in the Digital Age focuses on different identity populations (gay, lesbian, transgender) and examines the theories (queer, feminist, and media theories) in conjunction with contemporary representations of each identity group. "This book surveys the explosive youth culture in twenty-first century China, an active and powerful force catalysing cultural innovations, social changes, and collective efforts, re-inventing a pluralistic and multivalent youth (qingnian) in an age of enormous change, division and uncertainty. Schutzräume (Safer Spaces) gehen auf eine historische Tradition der fremdbestimmten Zwangsisolierungen ausgewählter Subjekte zurück. Ausschlaggebend für die Konstruktion von Devianz sind heteronormative Gesellschaftsordnungen, die sich besonders auf Frauen, Queers und Crips auswirken, und sie zur Anpassung drängen. Im Rahmen dieser Masterarbeit werden verschiedenste Safer Spaces hinsichtlich ihrer identitätskonstruierenden Macht dargestellt und jeweils zwischen selbst- und fremdbestimmten Räumen unterschieden, die jedoch nicht wertend gegenübergestellt, sondern vielmehr als widersprüchliche und brüchige Ordnungsstrukturen gefasst werden. Mithilfe theoretischer Fundamente der Queer Studies und Disability Studies werden historische Diskurse rund um Safer Spaces in ihren unerwarteten Verschmelzungen analysiert, die nicht als entweder "gut" oder "schlecht" gelesen werden können: Wann bieten Safer Spaces Schutz, wie werden sie zum Zwang und was passiert dazwischen? Wie wirken sich aktuell stark präsente Self-Care Strategien auf Diskurse zu Schutzräumen aus? Warum stehen Frauen, Queers und Crips seit jeher im Fokus von Schutzraumkonstruktionen? Heteronormative social orders are the main reason behind the construction of deviance, which has a particularly strong impact on women, queers and crips. Especially people with these backgrounds are expected and forced to adjust.In this master thesis, Safer Spaces are presented as an identity constructing power. It distinguishes between autonomous and nonautonomous spaces, which are not compared to be judged but to highlight their contradictory and fragile nature as social structures. With a theoretical basis consisting of queer studies and disability studies, historical discourses surrounding Safer Spaces are analyzed, but rated neither "good" nor "bad".When do Safer Spaces offer protection, when do they become compulsory and what happens between the two extremes? According to the 2000 census, Latinos/as have become the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Images of Latinos and Latinas in mainstream news and in popular culture suggest a Latin Explosion at center stage, yet the topic of queer identity in relation to Latino/a America remains under examined. Juana María Rodríguez attempts to rectify this dearth of scholarship in Queer Latinidad: Identity Practices, Discursive Spaces, by documenting the ways in which identities are transformed by encounters with language, the law, culture, and public policy. She identifies three key areas as the project's case studies: activism, primarily HIV prevention; immigration law; and cyberspace. In each, Rodríguez theorizes the ways queer Latino/a identities are enabled or constrained, melding several theoretical and methodological approaches to argue that these sites are complex and dynamic social fields.As she moves the reader from one disciplinary location to the other, Rodríguez reveals the seams of her own academic engagement with queer latinidad. Digital technology already has permeated the physical world. Devices such as smartphones, tablets or wearables and online venues like virtual worlds and social networks have penetrated every part of our lives. The contributions to this volume apply innovative forms of ethnographic research to the digital realm. They examine the emergence of new online communities around Greenlandic news blogs or Malaysian LGBT Facebook groups, the rise of transnational migrant networks facilitated by social media, or the representation of conflicts and the proliferation of ideologies within online spaces
