This book revisits key social issues and controversies in education. There are many social issues currently on political and governmental agendas, both in the UK and other countries - from safeguarding, childhood obesity, bullying and mental health, through to widening participation. Some of these issues relate to children and young people and are of concern to those working and researching in education, while others relate to Higher Education. The boundaries between the academic disciplines of politics, sociology, economics, psychology and education are porous. The contributions here illustrate how common interests and collaboration can assist in our understanding of complex social issues, the evaluation of current governmental responses, and the promotion of ideas about the way forward into the 21st century

Educated migrants find transition to the U.S. infinitely more effective than those without education. While English language competence is essential, literacy in one's native language increases the likelihood of acquiring English language literacy.Equal access to public education is the right of every child in the U.S., regardless of citizenship or migration status. Under law, all children between age six and sixteen years are required to be enrolled in school. College education, on the other hand, is accessible only to those with citizenship or legal visa or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) status. This paper explores the educational level of immigrants in the U.S. and discusses the governmental and nongovernmental resources that can be utilized to increase the likelihood of successful functioning in the country.RESUMOVários fatores contribuem para a efetiva integração dos migrantes nos Estados Unidos da América (EUA), e entre eles está a educação.

Catholic educators in recent years have worked to increase their schools' capacity to provide special education services to more students. The expansion of federal programs to support students with special needs has aided in dealing with this issue, but it has also exacerbated problems. The exacerbation comes from the increased focus on both the needs of children and the inability of the schools to respond positively as often as they would like. The aid comes in the form of some governmental assistance as well as increased financial support from local sources. However, the demand for services continues to exceed the resources available to respond. This paper explores the current dimensions of this situation.
