In: New approaches to Asian history
"Religion and religious ideas have played a fundamental role in the shaping of Asian history, society, and cultural practices. In this engaging and informative book, Thomas David DuBois sets out to explain how religious traditions and philosophies in China and Japan have evolved and intersected since the birth of Confucianism in China and the arrival of Buddhism in Japan. Crossing a broad terrain from Tokyo to Tibet, the book concentrates on the post-fourteenth century, when the long-lasting political dynasties that transformed the political, social, and economic institutions of both countries came into being. It is these connections that the author is keen to highlight, and he does so to effect by using key moments, such as the Taiping Uprising and the Boxer Rebellion, to underscore the importance of religion in transforming the course of Asian history. Contemporary chapters reflect on the wartime deification of the Japanese emperor, Marxism as religion, and the persecution of the Dalai Lama"--
This case study aims to explore the relationship between 'everyday religion' and prospects for urban sustainability in the context of on-going changes -in Kathmandu. It argues that everyday religion plays a role in furnishing the incentive for urban residents to sustainably manage 'culturalized nature' in the city. In particular, I examine water, the practices surrounding its use, and how these practices connect various social realms. I suggest that water in Kathmandu valley plays an important role as a connector encompassing life and death, religion and environment, as well as politics and development.

From Feng Shui to holistic medicine, from aromatherapy candles to yoga weekends, spirituality is big business. It promises to soothe away the angst of modern living and to offer an antidote to shallow materialism.Selling Spirituality is a short, sharp, attack on this fallacy. It shows how spirituality has in fact become a powerful commodity in the global marketplace - a cultural addiction that reflects orthodox politics, curbs self-expression and colonizes Eastern beliefs.Exposing how spirituality has today come to embody the privatization of religion in the modern West, Jeremy Carrette and Ri
(Verlag)

Implications of discussing religious topics for the development of critical theory are considered. Bertolt Brecht's essay on communism & religious struggles in early-20th-century Germany is reviewed, contending that Brecht's identification of three perspectives on the Nazi-Christian conflict illustrates the benefits of religious discourse for expanding critical social theory. Friedrich Schleiermacher's essay on religious indifference in the educated elite is viewed as a precursor to Brecht's perspective. Despite significant differences in the respective critics' approaches, it is asserted that both authors facilitate critical theory's exploration of the connection between politics & religion. Critical theory's concern with the issue of addressing religion from certain historical & civilizational frameworks is reviewed. Noting that previous scholarship has emphasized the political aspects of certain religions, it is concluded that approaches of critical theory to religion could offer secularized accounts of particular religious practices. The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between the foundations of voluntarist philosophy and the development of ideological utopias, especially when determining the development of a secular cult whose faith rests on politics as an instrument of collective salvation. The thesis of the article is that the nominalist disconnection of reality will allow the sublimation of a new anthropological and legal paradigm that must necessarily break with the past metaphysical order, inaugurating a materialist eschatology that prolongs modern subjectivity while dissolving into the indetermination of the public, destroying the essence of the political by administering and bureaucratising all human events.
