This life history is one of 29 life history interviews which are a part of a larger project, Life Histories of Individuals Who Have Been Influential in Developing Occupational Therapy (OT) in North Dakota and Wyoming. The purpose of the project is to gather information about the history and evaluation of occupational therapy (OT) practice in North Dakota and Wyoming through life histories of individuals who have been influential in developing OT in these two states. It is anticipated that the life history process will be a powerful way to gather this information. This study is intended to provide current and future generations of occupational therapists a view of the history and how occupational therapy practice has evolved from its inception to current practice in North Dakota and Wyoming. Dr. Carol Olson, a UND graduate, has been a practicing OT for the past 37 years. For the past 20 years, she has been a professor at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. Prior to teaching, she worked in mental health before specializing in pediatrics. She was formerly the VP of Legislation/Practice and President of North Dakota Occupational Therapy Association, as well as a registered lobbyist for state legislative session. Understanding inanimate 'nature-as-such' is traditionally considered the object of physics in Europe. The discipline acts as exemplary discursive practice of scientific knowledge production. However, as my ethnographic investigation of doing and communicating high energy physics demonstrates, animist conceptions seep into the ontological understanding of physics' 'objects', resonating with contemporary concepts of new materialism, new animism and feminist science and technology studies, signifying an atmospheric shift in the understanding of 'nature'. Drawing on my fieldwork at CERN, I argue that scientists take an opportunist stance to animate concepts of 'nature', depending on whom they're talking to. I am showing how the inanimate in physics is reanimated especially in scientific outreach activities and how the universalist scientific cosmology overlaps with indigenous cosmologies, as for example the Lakota ones.

China as a whole is facing a marked trend toward indigenization. The past thirty years have seen rapid and profound changes in the social sciences, heralding a new season in the humanities, in which the study of traditional culture has shifted from the sidelines to the center of academic research. Traditional culture, especially Confucianism, with its worldly orientation, is bound to play a central role in deepening and expanding the ongoing conversation with liberalism. At the same time, however, it must still develop values for structuring society and everyday life that are as influential as those of liberalism. The three main challenges to a Confucian revival today are the ruling ideology in China (namely, Marxism), the dominance of Western sociopolitical theory, and the current practices of disciplinary organization.

The legitimate and peaceable research conducted by scientists in the life sciences can sometimes be appropriated by those interested in developing and using biological weapons. The author argues that one way to counteract this possible appropriation would be for life scientists to agree to a code of conduct that limits the possible transfer of their research to weapons-based uses. The author surveys a range of possible codes of conducts that might be helpful for this purpose, including codes of ethics, codes of conduct and codes of practice. He suggests combining all these of these into a "matrix of codes" to provide the most effective response, but notes that so far there has not yet been a high degree of support among scientists for the adoption of such a code.

THIS PAPER INVESTIGATES THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ECONOMIC AND/OR VALUE DETERMINANTS AND POLITICAL TRUST USING THE 1985 PUBLIC OPINION STUDY FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN KOREA CONDUCTED BY THE KOREA INSTITUTION OF SOCIAL STUDIES (KISS). ALSO EXAMINED ARE THE RELATIVE EFFECTS OF PERCEIVED PERSONAL FINANCIAL SITUATIONS AND MACRO/COLLECTIVE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS ON LEVELS OF POLITICAL TRUST TO DISTINGUISH WHICH ONE IS MORE IMPORTANT IN DETERMINING POLITICAL TRUST IN KOREA. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE TRUST IN THE POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS AND GOVERNMENT PERFORMANCE DEPENDS ON BOTH PERSONA FINANCIAL SECURITY AND NATIONAL ECONOMIC CONDITIONS. EQUALLY IMPORTANT IS THE PERCEPTION OF HOW PEOPLE THINK THEY HAVE BEEN TREATED. IF KOREANS PERCEIVE THAT THEY ARE BEING TREATED UNFAIRLY, THEY ARE LIKELY TO FORM NEGATIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS POLITICS. THE AUTHORS ALSO FOUND THAT, REGARDLESS OF WHICH PARTY KOREANS FAVOR, IF THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT STABILIZE THE ECONOMY, THE DO NOT HESITATE TO WITHDRAW THEIR SUPPORT FORM IT.

When the House of Representatives began to allow television cameras in to cover its floor proceedings in early 1979, it was not widely noticed in the country or the academic community. As C-SPAN's Susan Swain notes, the initial cable coverage was from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, with only three-and-one- half million homes wired to receive the service. It was rare in the first year or two of television coverage for other television outlets, especially the commercial networks, to use any of the floor footage extensively either.But within a couple of years, the television coverage of the House began to penetrate the media and the country more widely. C-SPAN, under Brian Lamb's astute tutelage expanded dramatically; network evening and weekend news shows, growing comfortable at monitoring the floor debate, began to use both ten-second "sound bites" and more extended excerpts on their shows; public television, through the Mac-Neil/Lehrer NewsHour and The Lawmakers, made the televised floor proceedings staples of their news coverage.

This introduction sets the context for a discussion of the place of virtue ethics in the behavioral sciences. We outline how virtue ethics provide an illuminating account of human action that can expand social science and professional practice in ways that are unavailable in standard accounts. The authors in this issue of the American Behavioral Scientist provide a more systematic and comprehensive account of virtue than is currently available in the social science literature. This account focuses on virtues as character strengths that make it possible for individuals to seek the best kind of life. We present virtue ethics as a framework that makes it possible to break down the standard dichotomies between facts and values, individuals and society, and behavioral tendencies and a complete life. We take Aristotle's original account of virtue as a point of departure, which reduces our reliance on particular contemporary religious or political doctrines.

The doctoral dissertation analyses the factors influencing the personalization of leaders of Lithuanian political parties. The factors are divided into three sets of variables: leaders, political parties and the political system. Variables of the party leader analyse the openness and competitiveness of the election of party leaders, formal and informal powers and roles of party leaders, public speaking on behalf of the party and electoral results. Variables of the political party reveal the age and origins of the party, party organizational models, i.e., whether the party passed through a model of mass party organization, ideological radicalism of political party and the nature of the relationship between parties and their voters. Variables of the political system are discussed through the change of the society and its values on individualism – collectivism axis, the structure of government, the electoral system and the institutionalization of the party system. Empirical research is based on semi-structured interviews with party leaders and other parties' members involved in party decision-making in Labour party, Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, Liberal Movement of Lithuania's Republic, Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats and Party Order and Justice. The qualitative comparative analysis examines the determinants of personalization of political leadership. The empirical research revealed that the main factors determining the personalization of leaders of Lithuanian political parties are non-competitive election of the party leader, a monocratic decision making within the party and the age of the party.

Two experiments are reported that demonstrate that visual search for a signal from a number of potential signal sources in a sustained monitoring task is dependent upon previous visual-load history. It is shown that both temporal and spatial variations in load produce performance decrements, and occasionally increments, that cannot be predicted from static-load experiments. These data are not consistent with previous attempts to explain performance changes associated with workload history. An interpretation is offered in terms of the persistence of information-processing strategies across changing task conditions.
