Im Rahmen der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der Genese des europäischen Staatensystems und dem Prozeß seiner Ausweitung auf einen Weltzusammenhang spielt die These, derzufolge die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des Nordens wesentlich zurückzuführen sei auf die Ausbeutung des Südens, in mehrfacher Hinsicht eine Rolle: (a) als Kernstück der vornehmlich mit dem Namen I. Wallerstein verknüpften "Weltsystemtheorie" und (b) als Angelpunkt der mit dem Namen A. G. Frank und S. Amin verbundenen "Dependencia"-Theorie. Zieht man dagegen neuere wirtschaftshistorische Forschungen heran und fragt zugleich nicht nach den Ursachen und Randbedingungen einer "Entwicklung der Unterentwicklung", sondern nach dem Beitrag, den die Peripherie zur Entwicklung des Zentrums beigesteuert hat, so kommt man zu einem Schluß, der nicht ohne tragisch-historische Ironie ist: "Während zumal der europäische Hochimperialismus die seinem Zugriff ausgesetzten Gesellschaften der heutigen Dritten Welt prägte, indem er sie einseitig ... orientierte, hat doch die Kolonisierung der Peripherie zum wirtschaftlichen Wachstum der Metropolen nur wenig beigetragen."
