A conceptually rich, historically informed, and interdisciplinary study of the contentious politics emerging out of decades of authoritarian neoliberal economic reform, The Roots of Revolt examines the contested political economy of Egypt from Nasser to Mubarak, just prior to the Arab Uprisings of 2010-11. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted across rural and urban Egypt, Angela Joya employs an 'on the ground' approach to critical political economy that challenges the interpretations of Egyptian politics put forward by scholars of both democratization and authoritarianism. By critically reassessing the relationship between democracy and capitalist development, Joya demonstrates how renewed authoritarian politics were required to institutionalize neoliberal reforms demanded by the International Monetary Fund, presenting the real-world impact of economic policy on the lives of ordinary Egyptians before the Arab Uprisings.

The Cold War was a crucial conflict in American history. The Cold War established America as the leader of the free world and a global superpower. It shaped U.S. military strategy, economic policy, and domestic politics for nearly 50 years. In A Brief History of the Cold War, distinguished scholars Lee Edwards and Elizabeth Edwards Spalding recount the pivotal events of this protracted struggle and explain the strategies that eventually led to victory for freedom. This book examines the two fundamental arguments that are often raised against globalization: that it produces inequality and that it increases poverty. Here Guillermo De la Hesa, Chairman of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and a member of the Group of Thirty, and a leading figure in economics explains the ways in which wealthy nations and developing countries alike have failed to implement changes that would result in a reversal of these social ills, and also dispels the notion of the so-called "victim of globalization", demonstrating how, despite popular belief, acceleration of globalization actually stands to reduce the levels of poverty and inequality worldwide. He poses the question as to whether increased technological, economic, and cultural change can save the world from international income inequality, and by extension, further violence, terrorism and war.

Edward Gibbon Wakefield (1796–1862) was a controversial colonial advocate and political theorist, who was the driving force behind the early colonization of New Zealand and South Australia. Barred from entering parliament after serving a three-year sentence in Newgate Prison, Wakefield read widely on contemporary economics and social questions, developing his influential theory of colonization. He formed the New Zealand Association in 1837 to create a new colony in that country, finally emigrating himself in 1852. This volume, first published in 1849, contains an explanation of Wakefield's philosophy of colonization. Writing in the form of letters to an anonymous statesman, Wakefield fully explores and discusses the social, political and economic aspects of his system of colonization, based on regulating emigration by fixing the price of land. Wakefield's ideas influenced early colonial economic policy in South Australia, and stimulated the development of later theories of colonization

This paper examines insiders' informational privilege by studying the nexus between aggregated self-reported insider trades and Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU). We demonstrate that firm insiders act in response to the first signs of uncertainty as it appears in the media, and high-ranked managers, such as CEOs and CFOs, react more promptly than other insiders. Our findings further support the idea that insiders' indirect informational advantages allow them to interpret the significance of public information for cash flows more accurately in their own companies. Our study is the first to examine insiders' behavior using pure public information; it is also the first to exclude the influence of private information completely. We also consider various measures of EPU, including global and categorical indices representing economic, political uncertainty, while taking the financial crisis period into account.

This commentary seeks to summarize, assess, and make integrated sense of three scholarly works that, together, help to shed light on the discussion regarding central banks' scope, mandate, power, and independence. The issue is clearly relevant in comparative politics as one building block to evaluate both state capacities to manage the domestic economic environment routinely and the global crises faced recently. Within a period of 13 years, central banks across the world were at the center of the response to two different but highly devastating crises. The level of power enjoyed nowadays by central banks is, to a large extent, an outcome of the evolution following the 2008 crisis, which better equipped these institutions to provide some necessary economic policy interventions in 2020. The articles here reviewed are fine contributions to empirical observation and future research in this area.

The economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic prompted many governments to provide emergency payments to citizens. These one-off and recurring payments revealed the shortcomings of existing financial infrastructures even as electronic payments replaced cash for everyday expenses. Delays in getting government payments to citizens in many countries focused attention on the potential benefits of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). This article outlines the social and economic policy choices involved in designing a CBDC and the consequences of these choices for privacy. Priorities including preventing the criminal abuse of the financial system, geopolitical concerns and private sector innovation compete with, and potentially undermine, privacy. We identify and categorize four key privacy risks as 'losses' associated with current CBDC models: loss of anonymity, loss of liberty, loss of individual control, and loss of regulatory control.

Focusing on Bulgaria, and covering the 1990–2009 period, this article analyses what factors predict if print media will report election promises made by political parties. The study utilizes two original datasets. One consists of 3083 pledges made by 15 parties ahead of seven elections. The second dataset includes news stories published by six newspapers during each election campaign. The analysis reveals that pledges made by the main political opponents during each election are more likely to be published than those by smaller parties. Pledges related to economic policy are also more likely to be discussed in the news than other types of pledges, although the opposite is true regarding promises related specifically to the country's economic transition. Finally, in their reporting of pledges, print media do not reflect the salient ideological priorities of political parties.

Подробно анализируются умеренно-либеральный вариант изменения колеи российской истории и модернизации российского общества, его сильные и слабые стороны. ; On the basis of alternative macroeconomic estimations, the development of the Russian economy in the post-Soviet period is analyzed. It is argued that, if the existing economic policy remains unchanged, the economic crisis of2013-2014 is expected to be deep and lasting, and would have farreaching social and political implications. The article contains an in-depth analysis of the moderate liberal course of action to change the route of the history of Russia, as well as the way of Russia's modernization, revealing their advantages and disadvantages.

The article deals with the peculiarities of the government through the prism of the development and implementation of targeted programs for socio-economic development. Particular attention is given to the definition of "programming" and design of the targeted programming tools application algorithm at the general system of authorities' activities for effective implementation of socio-economic policy. ; Рассмотрены особенности государственного управления через призму разработки и внедрения целевых программ социально-экономического развития. Обсуждаются определение понятия "программирование" и разработка алгоритма применения инструментов целевого программирования в общей системе действий органов государственной власти по эффективной реализации социальноэкономической политики. ; Розглянуто особливості державного управління через призму розробки та впровадження цільових програм соціально-економічного розвитку. Окрему увагу надано визначенню поняття "програмування" та розробці алгоритму застосування інструментів цільового програмування у загальній системі заходів органів державної влади щодо ефективної реалізації соціально-економічної політики.

Die mangelnde Relevanz wirtschaftswissenschaftlicher Forschung wird nicht nur in Deutschland und nicht erst seit der Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise (und dem in Deutschland resultierenden Ökonomenstreit) und nicht nur in Politik und Medien beklagt. So hat z. B. Marc Blaug schon 1997 sein Unbehagen über die Ausrichtung der modernen Ökonomie geäußert: '(.) modern economics is sick; economics has increasingly become an intellectual game played for its own sake and not for its practical consequences' (Blaug 1997, S. 3). Ein Jahrzehnt später hat Gregory Mankiw (2007) diese Kritik, wenn auch mit etwas anderem Zungenschlag, in seiner Auseinandersetzung mit der sog. The Lisbon Strategy, which is implementing a new type of economic policy, is intended to change the economy of the European Union into a knowledge-based economy which will be the most competitive economy in the world. This should lead to sustainable economic growth by, among other things, providing a bigger number of better jobs and greater social cohesion. The issues of the development of competitiveness and innovativeness in European regions, which have their roots in the Lisbon Strategy and have transformed into the Regional Innovation Strategies, have become increasingly popular and significant. One of the tools facilitating this development is undoubtedly the cluster. The purpose of the present article is to outline new approaches to the world economy. It also presents an innovative dimension of co-operation as well as various forms of organizing contemporary entrepreneurship.
