The media salience trends of 40 events in the UK between 1984 and 2003 were examined to determine the validity of allegations regarding the agenda-setting effect of appointing public inquiries. Results show that, contrary to the 'long grass' argument, the attenuation in media salience following the appointment of a public inquiry is not different from that of non-inquired events. The findings are analysed and an alternative explanation is suggested for the prevalence of the 'long grass' argument.
An award-winning investigative reporter provides a clear, honest diagnosis of the country's chronic diseases-corporate rule, big media, and the religious right-in this damning analysis. Exposing the darker side of capitalism, this critique raises alarms about the security of democracy in today's society, including the rise of the corporate state, the insidious role of professional lobbyists, the emergence of religion and theocracy as a right-wing political tactic, the failure of the mass media, and the sinister presence of an Orwellian neo-fascism. Drawing on historic voices that include John

Today, a new breed of charismatic and media-savvy religious figures are reinvigorating internal debates on Islam by drawing large audiences across the Muslim world and the Muslim diaspora in the West. Using satellite media, websites, blogs and video blogs, these new religious celebrities are changing the nature of debate in Islam from a doctrinaire discourse to a practical discussion that focuses on individual enterprise as a spiritual quest. These leaders have become religious entrepreneurs, with sophisticated networks of message distribution and media presence. From Amr Khaled and Moez Masood, two leading figures of Arab Islamic entertainment television, to Baba Ali, a famous Muslim video blogger from California, Islam has never been more marketable. Satellite television and the internet are becoming fertile discursive spaces where not only religious meanings are reconfigured but also new Islamic experiences are mediated transnationally. This delocalisation of Islamic authority beyond the traditional sources of Egypt and Saudi Arabia is generating new producers and locales of religious meaning in Dubai, London, Paris and Los Angeles. This article examines the impact of celebrity religious figures and their new media technologies on the relativisation of authority in Islam and the emergence of a cosmopolitan transnational audience of Muslims. I ask if this transnational and seemingly apolitical effort is generating a new form of religious nationalism that devalues the importance of national loyalties. Adapted from the source document.

The action theoretical approach has already proved its value as a framework for communication research, most especially in the study of media audiences and media use. The approach privileges the perspective of the acting individual but offers guidelines for connecting the subjective orientation with networks of social interaction and for treating 'behaviour' as a social process. Research within this framework takes account of the wider social context and calls for a careful combination of empirical observation and interpretation, with a corresponding diversity of methodologies. This study begins from a simple question on how Dayak Benuaq and Dayak Tunjung/Tonyoii people (individually and collectively) are able to maintain their local wisdom and local culture in the midst of the ambush of mass media exposure and then acknowledged as the Dayak tribes who are still 'Beradat (Wellmannered)". Their local wisdom which is still maintained were able to counteract the negative eff ects of mass media exposure so it can be used as a model of literacy media, either through media literacy education or media literacy movement. This study used a qualitative explanatory method and used a communication ethnographic approach in fi eld. Primary data was collected through interviewsed and observations of some Dayak Benuaq and Dayak Tunjung people, including some community leaders and local governmentoffi cials that found with the snowball sampling technique. The results showed that, fi rst, public awareness through the local wisdom lense in media literacy has not been able yet to maximize their own potential due to society passivity as media users, as well as a lack of support from the government to create a media savvy society. Second, the model used within both tribes is known as Protectionist Model based on their local wisdom which includes four kinds of elements, which are; the ability to access, to analyse, to evaluate, and to create content.

Although routine reliance on other media is regarded as a major factor in journalists' news decisions, it gets little scholarly attention. This study investigates the importance of media use for journalistic work. Taking German political journalists as an example, the study shows that media use is a major part of everyday journalistic work, as indicated by the amount of time journalists spend using other media and by the importance they assign to other media for different stages of news production. However, the importance of other media differs among journalists working for different types of media and among journalists of different ages and political views.

The Malian press, having played a crucial role in March 1991, was granted near-total freedom of expression for a decade. This resulted in a significant growth of the media. With the emergence of electoral pluralism, close links were forged between the press & nascent political formations. Corruption & opportunism flourished. As increasing numbers of unqualified journalists & amateur radio stations have joined the fray, the media sector has become less & less professional. Attempts to impose some manner of order -- by outside lending agencies, national regulatory bodies & within the profession itself -- have for the most part failed. Adapted from the source document.

Donald Trump has been a vocal critic of the news media. This study content analyzes how Trump tweeted about the news media as the Republican nominee through his first year in office. Results revealed that Trump privileged conservative media via praise and media appearance frames, mentions, and retweets, while denigrating nonconservative and general media via attack and bias frames. In addition, Trump employed attack frames more as president than nominee. Finally, Trump's attack and bias frames generated more retweets and favorites than other frames. Given Trump's influence, such framing could strongly contribute to the public's polarized perceptions of the news media.
