What is meant by this is the degree to which companies abide by the regulations set for corporate governance and prevention of criminal measures in a commercial context. The questions of the LRG focused on outlining the relevant rules as well as assessing what the ramifications are for breaking them.

Daniel Pauw untersucht erstmals in einer internationalen Studie, wie Coaches mit Klienten unterschiedlicher kultureller Herkunft eine tragfähige Arbeitsbeziehung aufbauen und erhalten. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass kulturelle Prägungen den Coachingprozess auf verschiedenste Weise beeinflussen können und welche Faktoren für eine erfolgreiche Beziehungsgestaltung besonders wichtig sind. Die Verknüpfung der Ergebnisse mit Erkenntnissen aus der interkulturellen Kommunikations- und Therapieforschung erweitert nicht nur die aktuelle Coachingforschung um eine interkulturelle Perspektive, sondern bietet auch Praktikern konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen für den kompetenten Umgang mit kultureller Diversität. In my paper, I present the antecedents of the Hungarian-Italian Treaty of Friendship, Conciliation and Arbitration of 1927. After the Treaty of Trianon, Hungary tried to find allies to broke out of the international isolation, but was faced with numerous difficulties. While the Bethlen government approached Jugoslavia, Italy offered a possibility for Hungary, that could not be refused. Finally, the Hungarian leadership accepted the Italians' offer and the negotiations between the two countries commenced at the end of 1926. Both Italy and Hungary were wary of each other, they tried to get to know the other's intentions, but in the end, they arrived at an understanding. After these discussions Bethlen and Mussolini signed a Treaty of Friendship on 5th April, 1927 in Rome.

A U.S. missile strike against the Assad regime in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack may have lessened a fear of Russia among countries that nominally back the Syrian opposition. Renewed U.S. diplomatic engagement in Syria could relieve pressure on the opposition to accept a settlement at the Geneva talks, which would be little more than a facelift of the Alawite-dominated regime. The international environment has lacked the balance to redress the disenfranchisement of Syria's majority Sunni population - a root cause of the war. European states hope to employ their reconstruction funding capacity. But stabilization remains far-fetched without a political transition and an inclusive system that can end the Assad clan's monopoly on power. (SWP Comments)

Abstract From evolutionary to revolutionary, from conciliatory to belligerent, from co-operation to non cooperation, India's freedom for struggle had unpredictable oscillations. Once jewel in the crown of British Empire became an Achilles hill. The insurmountable challenges from domestic and international arena made British Empire take a somber decision to Divide and Quit. This paper highlights the British cabinet mission to India and how it ended in a fiasco ultimately collapsing the bridge between the two communities leaving the scope open for perennial skirmishes. In India during post-war 1945, the the penultimate scene of the political drama and sense of abnegation of what was once a precious jewel in the crown of British catapulted the political euphoria to the front.

Is Danish European policy activist? Danish European policy is surprisingly activist in the sense that it strategically, independently and boldly pursues the defense and promotion of Danish interests and values, even to the extent of defying the vision of Europe promoted by EU's Franco-German engine. However, activism is typically formulated by Danish decision makers as the "politics of necessity" combining a pragmatic defense of the Danish welfare state with proactive agenda-setting in selected issue areas. Using a neoclassical realist explanatory model, the article explains this policy as a the result of policy makers grounded in a Danish liberal-egalitarian political culture navigating an international space characterized by a combination of an American liberal order and negotiated and institutionalized European power politics.

Abstract At the start of the 21st century, there was a reconfiguration of the Brazilian domestic political dynamic, as its actors gradually became more interested in the formulation of foreign policy and tried to safeguard their interests. When analysing the country's foreign policy for the financial sector, it becomes quite clear that to consider foreign policy simply as one type of public policy is insufficient to assess its decision-making process. This paper seeks to contribute to the debate by arguing that the analysis of foreign policy should be carried out by taking into consideration specific issue-areas. This paper explores the movement to rearrange domestic decision power, seeking to gain leverage in international negotiations.

During the 17 years that Vladimir Putin has ruled Russia, the country has become increasingly authoritarian. However, I argue that this rollback of democracy has not been motivated by Putin's blind desire to maximize his political power, as many have assumed. Rather, his anti-democratic policies have responded to perceived specific threats to his control. In applying theories originally developed in the field of international relations to individual leaders, we can understand Putin as a "defensive realist" who balances against threats in order to maintain security rather than maximize power. This is an essential distinction that produces important conclusions about what motives lie behind the increasingly authoritarian character of the Russian state and gives insights into the possible future trajectory of the regime.

Die kapitalistische Globalisierung führte zu einer historisch einmaligen Konzentration von Macht und Reichtum in den Händen weniger. Die öffentliche Diskussion hierüber wird dabei meist von Verschwörungstheorien einer angeblich omnipotenten globalen Elite bestimmt. Eine kritische sozialwissenschaftliche Theorie von Macht und Eliten im Kontext der Globalisierung fehlte jedoch bislang. Christian Schneickert stellt nun eine empirisch fundierte Aktualisierung der sozialwissenschaftlichen Elitentheorie vor. Er analysiert in seiner international vergleichenden Studie die Sozialstruktur und Globalisierung politischer und wirtschaftlicher Eliten in vier sehr unterschiedlichen Staaten des globalen Nordens und Südens: Brasilien, Deutschland, Indien und den USA. Die Studie umfasst eine umfassende Darstellung der elitentheoretischen Debatten im 20. Jahrhundert und führt diese bis zu ihrer Erneuerung. Diese theoretischen Neuerungen wendet er sodann an umfangreichem empirischen Material an, indem er biografische Daten von 336 Spitzenpolitikern sowie Vorständen von Global 2000-Unternehmen als Analyse nationaler Machtfeldern konzipiert. Christian Schneickert verknüpft damit bisher nicht verfügbare empirische Daten mit Bourdieus Feldtheorie, welche in der deutschsprachigen Soziologie gegenwärtig große Bedeutung erlangt. Aber auch methodisch ist die Studie innovativ, indem neben klassischen statistischen Verfahren insbesondere multiple Korrespondenzanalysen zum Einsatz kommen.

Biobanks that store large masses of human biological samples and personal data for research purposes play a crucial role in international biomedical research. The samples and data stored, however, possibly reveal a lot about the individual donor and put him as well as connected individuals or groups at risk of discriminiation. The author questions whether the traditional requirement of the donor's individual consent to unspecific future uses of his sample and data adequately protects his interests. She addresses the question if and how the donor should and can be further included in decisions regarding the future use of his sensitive samples and data. In particular, she analyses the potential of innovative so-called trust models for biobank-governance in a German context.

In response to the persistent problem of deficient birth registration, NGO-led coalitions in Zimbabwe are seeking to build a strong case for prioritizing universal birth registration. Beside efforts to amplify children's right to birth registration as defined in international rights conventions, these coalitions seek to construct a causal relationship between birth registration and social exclusion outcomes. The idea that the absence of birth registration intensifies social exclusion for children has become something of a mantra in birth registration activism, but despite the surveys conducted in Zimbabwe and other developing countries, data to demonstrate the dynamic interplay of birth registration and social exclusion are lacking. In this article I illustrate that qualitative research can bridge this gap and strengthen birth registration activism.

Considering gender role attitudes as part of a broader cultural change related to the modernization process, this study adopts a path-dependency approach to analyze the support for the role of women in the public sphere in Italy since 1988. Modernization processes varied across Italian regions and the paper explores how different gender patterns developed accordingly. Using pooled data from European Values Survey, World Values Survey, and International Social Survey Program, the author assesses if this specific change is part of the postmaterialist shift and investigates the mechanisms of change carrying out cohort decomposition methods. The results address a reinforcement of traditionalism mainly due to the period effect that shows regional differences given by history.

Die Idee der europäischen Einheit hat im protestantischen Denken keine lange Tradition. Über Jahrhunderte war der Protestantismus aufs engste mit der Staats- und Nationenwerdung in Europa verbunden gewesen, weshalb er lange Zeit für europäische Vielfalt und Disparatheit, nicht aber für eine wie auch immer geartete Einheit stand. Erst ab Ende der 1930er Jahre ist das Entstehen eines protestantischen Europadiskurses zu beobachten - und zwar innerhalb der internationalen ökumenischen Bewegung. Dort, wo die Einheit der Kirchen über die nationalen Grenzen hinweg angestrebt wurde, ließ der drohende Krieg zwischen eben jenen Nationen ein europäisches Bewusstsein entstehen, und führende Vertreter der Ökumene begannen, sich in die allgemeine Diskussion über die Zukunft Europas einzuschalten. Von zentraler Bedeutung war dabei der niederländische Theologe Willem Adolph Visser 't Hooft, der den ökumenischen Protestantismus im 20. Jahrhundert wie kein Zweiter prägte. In der vorliegenden Studie untersucht der Autor, wie sich seine Wahrnehmung Europas als einer politischen, kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Einheit von den 1920er bis zu den 1960er Jahren entwickelte. Dabei vollzieht die Studie nach, welche Personen, Gruppierungen sowie welche geistigen, ideellen und theologischen Strömungen ihn bei seiner Meinungsbildung bezüglich "Europa" beeinflusst haben. Auf diese Weise eröffnet sie einen exemplarischen Einblick in die Entstehungsphase des protestantischen Europadiskurses, der in der historischen Forschung bislang weitgehend vernachlässigt wurde.

What impact does the European Union (EU) have on good governance Romania? The analysis shows that EU-driven governance reforms improve substantive legality (the alignment of domestic legislation with international best standards), state capacity but weaken formal legality (the inner morality of law), many aspects of impartiality, efficiency-effectiveness and the coherence of state structures and policies. As a result, good governance is undermined. The persistence of bad governance is explained by three fundamental problems of Europeanization: 1. focus on quantity instead of quality, 2. partisan empowerment of change agents, 3. biased assessment of reform progress. The main argument is supported by an indicator-based analysis and qualitative interviews with representatives from the EU and Romania.
