Most research on children's conception of death has probed their understanding of its biological aspects: its inevitability, irreversibility and terminal impact. Yet many adults subscribe to a religious conception implying that death marks the beginning of a new life. Two recent empirical studies confirm that in the course of development, children supplement their biological conception of death with this religious conception. Depending on which of those two conceptions is primed, children as well as adults arrive at mutually inconsistent conclusions about whether death arrests various bodily and mental processes. The coexistence of these two conceptions within the same individual raises questions about the extent to which children and adults recognize that inconsistency and how they respond when it is brought to their attention.

Becoming Activists in Global China is the first purely sociological study of the religious movement Falun Gong and its resistance to the Chinese state. The literature on Chinese protest has intensively studied the 1989 democracy movement while largely ignoring opposition by Falun Gong, even though the latter has been more enduring. This comparative study explains why the Falun Gong protest took off in diaspora and the democracy movement did not. Using multiple methods, Becoming Activists in Global China explains how Falun Gong's roots in proselytizing and its ethic of volunteerism provided the launch pad for its political mobilization. Simultaneously, diaspora democracy activists adopted practices that effectively discouraged grassroots participation. The study also shows how the policy goal of eliminating Falun Gong helped shape today's security-focused Chinese state. Explaining Falun Gong's two decades of protest illuminates a suppressed piece of Chinese contemporary history and advances our knowledge of how religious and political movements intersect.

In 1996, more than half of the states considered legislation banning same-sex marriages. This article examines these events as a geographic expansion of the scope of the conflict rather than as traditional state-centered policy innovation. I argue that the diffusion of same-sex marriage bans was determined by the organized efforts of advocacy coalitions & internal state characteristics rather than by regional diffusion or communication among policy experts. I use state-level data collected from activists, media accounts, & official sources to establish the organized efforts to ban same-sex marriage. I then develop & empirically test a model of policy diffusion to predict both state consideration & adoption of policies banning same-sex marriage. The findings suggest that the diffusion of these policies is best explained by the presence of an organized national campaign by conservative religious groups, the local resources of interest groups, & other internal state characteristics rather than by regional diffusion patterns. It identifies the aspects of the host gaze that distinguish it from the tourist gaze and from the conventional gaze encountered. It also identifies different types of host gazes and roles associated with them, as well as various categories of visitor that are recognized in the host gaze. The book analyses important religious, communal, cultural as well as psychological and emotional aspects of the host gaze. It shows how host communities construct, organize and systemize their gaze upon different tourists in different socioeconomic, political and cultural environments. The pre-existing cultural images of the host gaze and the differences in the host gaze across various geographical regions and nations are presented. The aim of this article is to bring to light part of the contextual methodological analysis of the Black Figures lekane (Archaic Period) found in the Artemísion of Thassos, an island located in the North of the Aegean. The sanctuary of Artemis is an important religious marker for understanding the urban expansion of the city, as well as the dynamics of local female worship. The data collection took place from the publication of the descriptive catalog of the black figures lekane of Thassos by A. Coulié in La céramique thasiennes à figures noires of 2002 in ÉtTh XIX, the analysis of a sample of material in loco and the data collection contexts from the Bulletin Correspondance Hellenique, in which we seek to delve deeper into the analysis of archaeological contexts. This study is part of the research in the doctoral thesis, in which we analyzed a sample of 54 vases in the Museum of Thasos, a total of 126 fragments of lekane found in the sanctuary of Artemis. In this article, we will present the analysis of 2 fragments of lekane from the cutting of decorative elements of animal figures typically from Eastern Greece in the archaic period and animals with a monstrous aspect, apparently common signs in the context in question. The theoretical-methodological contribution allowed us to observe important aspects of the particularities of the female cult in Thasos, from the re-insertion of the lekane in the contextual universe and the unveiling of aspects that characterize female and religious attendance from the sectored contexts of Artemísion.
