International audience ; Comment mesurer et observer les consommations et les pratiques alimentaires ? Ce chapitre porte sur la progressive évolution des enquêtes alimentaires, abandonnant les ménages comme unité d'observation au profit des individus dans un souci croissant de mesure des expositions individuelles aux risques (nutritionnels et sanitaires) liés à l'alimentation. Cette évolution, mise en évidence ici pour les États-Unis, s'observe en France dans les enquêtes publiques les plus récentes. À un tel changement dans l'unité d'observation - du ménage aux individus - correspond une modification de l'ensemble de la signification sociale accordée à l'alimentation. La dimension collective et sociale des pratiques alimentaires tend progressivement à s'effacer des grilles d'analyses - au moment même où le repas familial est célébré comme premier rempart contre l'obésité - au profit d'une vision plus individualiste et médicalisée.

International audience ; Several governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), motivated by the UNESCO have undertaken the task of documenting the intangible cultural heritage of their communities. However, this has proven to be a difficult task. In this work we present a conceptual knowledge discovery in databases (CKDD) approach to aid a particular organization in this task (which has already started). Because of the dynamism of the cultural heritage domain, the design of the database used to store the documentation data has become obsolete. We propose to redesign the database (actually, its schema) to unveil independent modules of information collaboratively created by different domain experts. Finally, we present a straightforward method to convert the redesigned data schema into an ontological model which can be used for integration and publication purposes.

International audience ; Les témoignages sur les difficultés des universités à atteindre leurs objectifs dans le cadre de la LRU (2007) s'accumulent démontrant la pertinence d'une série de doutes sur l'efficacité des politiques publiques et de leur mise en œuvre dans le cas de l'université. Si on s'intéresse à trois axes managériaux à savoir la performance, le contrôle de gestion et la gestion des ressources humaines, on constate la persistance de dysfonctionnements sur un fond d'absence de maîtrise des paramètres budgétaires. Cela pose ainsi la question de la qualité du pilotage des universités et des modèles de contrôle de gestion ou RH actuellement mis en œuvre en leur sein. Nous souhaitons dans cette communication ouvrir des réflexions croisées permettant de rechercher un modèle plus adapté, respectueux des missions, des personnels et des limites budgétaires.

Juliette Harkin, M.Phil Oxon, is a researcher and consultant on the Arab media and a PhD student undertaking research on Syria in the School of Political, Social and International Studies at the University of East Anglia. Her M.Phil thesis (2009) focused on the changing practice of journalism in Syria.The aim of this article is to explore a renewed and radical 'media culture' that has developed in the extraordinary conditions of the Syrian revolution. The article quickly dismisses the focus on the technology and platforms while using small-scale ethnography to examine social networking sites like Facebook and to underscore the diversity of content being produced by Syrians. It notes how the Syrian media revolution is clearly well under way and how radical, alternative forms of media production are flourishing.

Many companies in European Union are interested in the possibility to transfer their registered offices to another country. Doing that would lead to a change in the applicable law. If a company is allowed to dissolve in its country of incorporation without the liquidation, and to incorporate in the new state, the company would maintain its legal status and all of it's assets and liabilities would be passed to a company incorporated in the new state. This paper analyzes the possibility of such transfer according to European Union member states private international law and substantive law provisions. It also analyzes the jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice and it's influence on possibility of such transfer. The indirect possibility of such transfer, according to European Union secondary law, is also disscused.

This study explores the dramatic rise and demise of Douglas & McIntyre (Educational) as a case study of western regional publishing in Canada. During its nine years of life, and before its sale to the multinational firm, International Thomson, this small regional publisher produced a ground breaking social studies series, as well as a health series, and other books. Factors in favour of regional educational publishing were: a rise in Canadian nationalism which often manifested itself regionally, political lobbying, the right employees, and Ministry of Education textbook policies. Factor which mitigated against success were: pedagogical change, competition from American subsidiaries, limitations on access to capital funding, allegiances of company principals, provincial autonomy with regard to education, a change in Ministry of Education textbook policies, and the ascendance of multinational firms.

Since China joined the international climate negotiations, the role of systematic research and expert advice has grown steadily. A small but highly specialized expert community of semi-official research institutes and university-based research units has formed around Chinese policy-making institutions. The findings of this article indicate that these climate experts have become important actors in Chinese climate policy. Political leaders frequently consult members of this expert community and draw on their substantive conclusions. In some cases, experts have been able to influence policy action by raising awareness of climate vulnerability and contributing to the definition of national emission targets. However, experts seeking to alter the general framework of 'common but different responsibilities' have had limited impact. (J Contemp China/GIGA)

CARIM-India: Developing a knowledge base for policymaking on India-EU migration ; In Ireland, the demand for specific skills has consistently exceeded available supply from the EEA labour market since the early 2000s. As a result, Ireland has aimed to attract key talent from non-EEA countries to fill skills shortages in specific sectors such as IT, engineering, finance and healthcare. This has led to the introduction of a wide range of policy measures over the years, including Green Cards for highly skilled workers and various measures to retain international students, even if such measures have become controversial in the context of economic recession and high unemployment in recent times. ; CARIM-India is co-financed by the European University Institute and the European Union

Since the early 1940s, the ecosystem approach has been developed in a variety of forms by North American ecologists. Lindeman established its foundation, with his focus on functional components and energy transfers between trophic levels; this view was developed further by several ecologists, including G. Evelyn Hutchinson, and H. T. and E. P. Odum. Ecosystem ecology eventually became closely associated with powerful American institutions, such as the Atomic Energy Commission, receiving ample support; in association with the International Biological Program it became known as "big ecology''. More recently, ecosystem ecology has exhibited strengthened interest in spatial patterns, the role of species in ecosystems, and global change. This history has encompassed various ontological, methodological, ethical and political claims regarding the place of this approach in the discipline of ecology and in environmental governance.

The Scottish Ten project is a five-year initiative of the Scottish Government to digitally document significant heritage sites around the world for future generations both in Scotland and overseas. The project is fundamentally grounded in collaboration and is delivered by Historic Scotland and the Digital Design Studio at Glasgow School of Art, in partnership with CyArk. In addition, the Scottish Ten team collaborate with local partners at each site to deliver products which will be of use to site managers in the ongoing conservation, management and interpretation of their sites. The project utilises diverse 3D data capture methods, as appropriate for each site, but the foundation of the documentation lies in terrestrial laser scanning. This paper explores the collaborations, methodologies and gives brief case studies from one Scottish and one international site.

There is hardly another country as isolated and with such a bleak image as North Korea. It is portrayed in the Western media as a Hermit Kingdom ruled by an outdated, communist dictatorship whose clandestine nuclear programmes alarm its neighbours and which uses dreadful labour camps to control a population wracked by famine. The regime's poor track record on human rights is stressed time and again by both Western governments and international organizations. Prospects look bleak for any improvement in relations let alone the start of a dialogue on human rights. Offering a rare, nuanced analysis of the North Korean situation, this short study argues that not only is a constructive and fruitful dialogue on human rights possible but also it is desirable for both parties.

My research will examine the origins of the current corn crisis in Mexico. The rise in corn prices are not the result of shortages in production, but the outcome of increased demand stemming from the production of biofuels. I hypothesize that in an age of trade deregulation and food riots, food security remains a possibility for Mexico. I propose that by examining international conditions, free trade policies and the civic response to the 2007 Mexican neoliberal1 tortilla crisis, we can understand not only the current corn crisis but also the larger crises of food entitlement currently afflicting the developing world. International audience ; Archaeologically, only little is known of the prehistoric, ancient, and medieval periods of central Arabia, the Riyadh Province in particular. And yet, as one of the few watered areas in the Najd, it has played a significant role in the political, economic, and religious history of the Peninsula. In order to throw new light on this region, in 2011 a French-Saudi archaeological mission started work in the Kharj oasis, surveying the area. Several types of site have been located: middle Palaeolithic workshops, Bronze Age necropoleis, and late antique/early Islamic settlements and irrigation systems. The main results of this survey are presented here, focusing on two sites: al-Kharj 22, a middle Palaeolithic site, and the late antique/early Islamic site of al-Yamāma, which was one of the majo
