The most widely discussed transnational governance reform initiative of the 1970s, the New International Economic Order (NIEO) called for fundamental legal, economic, and political transformations to international institutions and norms designed to redirect more of the benefits of transnational integration toward the developing nations of the Global South. This special issue of Humanity reconsiders the claims of the NIEO in light of recent debates about global governance, and suggests that the NIEO's proposals for an alternative global order continue to haunt the global geopolitical imaginary.

The fledgling field of international relations research in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, & Romania is examined. Authors & topics in the most prominent scholarly journals & the most important research institutions in each of these countries are described. The international relations discipline in these countries is state-centric, with journals linked to foreign ministries. Journals suffer from weak academic standards. Anglo-American intellectual influences, followed by Western European & Russian ones, permeate the discipline. The most common theme is Central & Eastern European security. In terms of research institutions, international relations research mainly takes place at the universities, & it is highly concentrated in the areas of European Union & NATO enlargement. Soft output, eg, conferences, is more the norm than hard output, eg, in-depth analyses. The institutions are strongly influenced by Western Europe. Three representative international relations institutions are described: the Central & Eastern Europe International Studies Association, its publication The Journal of International Relations & Development, & the Central European Univerity.
