This study seeks to understand how academic business valuation research influences business practice. It uses knowledge market theory to assess the efficacy of the evidence‐based solution to academic research relevance. Fifteen semi‐structured interviews were conducted with chartered business valuators in Canada. Interview transcripts were subjected to thematic analysis using QSR's NVivo software (QSR International, Cambridge, USA). The research findings revealed that academic research on business valuation is relevant to business valuation practitioners. The professional nature of the business valuation profession promotes evidence‐based management practices and encourages the use of academic literature in managerial decision making. Business valuation academics should not change the manner in which they publish scholarly articles. Instead, a solution to the academic relevanceproblem resides in having efficient market intermediaries in the form of knowledge translation mechanisms. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The tendency to change foreign policy tilt with every change in government has posed difficulty for Nepal to maintain internal cohesion and external adaptation. Now the nation is suffering from ceaseless spasms of political instability because many of its state-bearing institutions are broken and new are not yet invented to glue the nation's diverse society and get viable traction to balance neighborhood geopolitics and become relevant to international community. The imaginary consolidation of America as a sovereign nation-state situated on a state-centric international topography was and remains predicated on spatializing practices bound up with the ongoing eradication of indigenous people(s) and simultaneous effacement, or at least repression, of the violence of the (neo)colonial encounter. The American nation-state is founded on the all-but-forgotten bodies and worlds of indigenous peoples and is continually secured by a narrative constellation that reduces the decimation of people(s) to a clearing of space on which a sovereign nation could be constructed or within which it could evolve. This article will trace the various techniques of decimating indigenous cultures and bodies that facilitate efforts of nationalist historiography that reduce indigenous cartographies to mere space situated within a narrative trajectory of American national unification.

While Canada is widely seen as a leader in accommodating different forms of diversity, the unique needs of official language minority communities (OLMCs) are not adequately recognized in the constitution, and often fall through the cracks of the "Canadian model". Can we imagine a new deal for OLMCs, perhaps in the form of new legislation or even a new constitutional provision that would provide stronger recognition of their national status, their collective rights, and their political autonomy? While I share the political objectives of achieving greater recognition and autonomy, this paper identifies a number of potential pitfalls and dead-ends that need to be avoided in the pursuit of such a new deal. I focus in particular on a) the role of legal categories, b) the limits of international law, and c) the constraints on constitutional reform.

Under international market pressure, companies are increasingly forced to restructure their operations. The diverse outcomes of such restructurings have important employment implications, as illustrated by recent examples such as Opel, Carrefour and AB-InBev. Comparative research has mainly studied the influence of different industrial relations systems on restructuring processes. This institutional literature has, however, been criticised for being overly deterministic. This article aims to accommodate such criticism by not only considering the institutional context (market regime) but also the role of social actors (management and trade unions) and the market environment. The study is based on a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) of 12 case studies in seven countries. The findings show that institutional structures do restrain social actors' behaviour but that actors also actively use these structures for pursuing their interests and shaping the content of restructuring.

Reciprocal trade agreements (RTAs) have proliferated rapidly in Asia in recent years, an unprecedented phenomenon in a region in which state-led institution-building efforts were largely unsuccessful during the Cold War years. In this article, we investigate the qualitative provisions of RTAs in Asia, focusing on agreements that are professedly geared toward trade liberalization through reciprocal exchanges of trade concessions. We build on the concept of credible commitment—that states "tie their hands" through international agreements and thus signal strong commitment to trade liberalization. We argue that a broad range of agreement provisions will affect an RTA's ability to achieve its primary objective: trade liberalization. We present a coding scheme that measures the strength of a wide variety of provisions in the legal texts of RTAs. Using quantitative analysis, we analyze the impact of various components of Asia's RTAs on participants' trade flows.

The events that took place in Tunisia in early 2011, proved to be very important for the whole international environment. The northern part of Africa is signifi cant for the Western countries for natural resources which are available there for these reasons, stable and politically predictable, situation in the countries situated there is a strategically important element of a global security system. Tunisia since mid December 2010 has witnessed riots of young people throughout the country who, in the desperate acts of the self burning claimed democracy in their country, reduction of unemployment (13%), improving the living conditions and prospects for a better tomorrow for young people. "Jasmine Revolution", the name given by the French journal Le Monde to the riots, led to the overthrowing of President Ben Ali, after 23 years of rule and his escape to Saudi Arabia.

AbstractThe fast-paced landing of China in Latin America raises the question of how such a complex relationship is being built from little previous contact. Focusing on Colombia's printed media, the article examines the construction of China's public image. A Janus-faced view of China is initially revealed: a growing power perceived as an auspicious trade partner on the one hand; a troubling new actor in the international context on the other. Further analysis shows shades of grey that reveal a multifaceted, continuously evolving image of China that tells us much about both countries. The depiction of China's rising power, whose direction and purpose suggest a paradigm of "modernity without enlightment," brings light to Colombia's unsettled accounts with democracy and development. The article sets a launching pad for further research on such mutually constitutive relationships.

From 19 to 23 September 2011 there was held in Newport XXVI Voorburg Group meeting on the service sector statistics. The group was founded at the initiative of Statistics Canada in 1986, in response to the demands of the UN as an informal forum for the support in the development of service sector statistics. Polish CSO participates in this group since 2006. Experience and knowledge gained in the group helped in clarifying the vision for the development of services sector statistics in Poland. The solutions used in other countries in this area allowed us to look differently than before on the tasks of the Office. Active participation in discussions and presentation of Polish experience in the group forum allowed for better preparation of sector studies, and also to seek new opportunities for their development. An important element of international cooperation in this regard will be the organisation of the next group meeting in 2012 in Warsaw.

AbstractHow are Asian financial markets interlinked and how are they linked to markets in developed countries? What is the main driver of fluctuations in Asian financial markets as well as real economic activity? To answer these questions, we estimate the spillover index proposed by Diebold and Yilmaz and gauge the degree of interaction in both financial markets and real economic activity among Asian economies. We first show that the degree of the international spillover in stock markets is uniform, irrespective of the groups of countries concerned, such as the G3 and ASEAN4. This suggests the importance of global common shocks in stock markets. We then discuss the macro‐finance dissonance. In stock and bond markets, the United States has been the main driver of fluctuations. However, China has emerged as an important source of fluctuations in real economic activity.

Partant d'un cas concret d'institutionnalisation de l'égalité entre les sexes mis en place par l'Agence canadienne de développement international (ACDI) dans trois ministères du Maroc, cet article examine les facteurs qui contribuent à son implantation ou qui, au contraire, la freinent. Les résultats indiquent que, malgré l'adoption de plans d'action concernant l'institutionnalisation de l'égalité entre les sexes, celle-ci se heurte à des résistances liées au système social, à la culture organisationnelle et au mode d'implantation du changement. Privilégiant la dimension technique de l'institutionnalisation de l'égalité entre les sexes, pour l'essentiel articulée autour d'études sur les inégalités, de création de structures organisationnelles et d'activités de formation, les projets étudiés tendent à négliger la dimension culturelle du changement, au risque de s'éloigner des besoins et des réalités des organisations locales et, par là, de restreindre les possibilités de stratégies proprement participatives et endogènes.

The first universal exhibition of the post-Second World War era and a major battleground in the 'cultural Cold War', the 1958 Brussels Exposition served as an appropriate venue for the display of Sputniks I and II. As the centerpiece of the enormous Soviet pavilion, the Sputnik replicas enabled the USSR to bask in the reflective glow of its scientific and technological achievement before an international audience of 40 million. Based on archival sources (from Brussels and Moscow) as well as contemporary published material, this article employs a modified version of Stuart Hall's reception theory to analyze Soviet authorities' production (or 'encoding/writing') of the exhibit and its appropriation ('decoding/reading') by radically different publics – non-Soviet visitors and Soviet readers back home. It argues that the producers exercised only tenuous control over the meaning of Sputnik.

International audience ; Cloud Computing enables the dynamic provision of resources on-demand over the Internet. The key advantage for users is that data becomes accessible from anywhere and at any time. However, to the extent that they lose control over the infrastructure, users can no longer control the way data can be accessed by them or by others. This is likely to negatively affect the fundamental rights of end-users in terms of privacy and freedom of expression. Assuming that market mechanisms alone are unable to preserve competition in the market for Cloud services, some other form of regulation might be necessary. This paper will compare the advantages and drawbacks of two types of governmental intervention (ex-ante regulation and ex-post regulation) to conclude that the law should ultimately encourage self-regulation by the market players themselves.

Au-delà de ces usages connotés, nous proposons d'en faire un véritable concept scientifique, à la croisée de l'histoire des idées et de la sociologie politique. Pour ce faire, nous avons choisi de nous attarder sur le concept de liberté tel qu'il est défini dans les textes sociaux-libéraux, autour de la question des droits individuels, puis son extension, à travers la question des relations entre État, marché et société civile.

Le présent article revient sur trois grands axes de cette approche singulière des réalités sociopolitiques, la prédominance de la Constitution, le pouvoir compris comme relation, et le processus de fédéralisation.
