Am 28. Juni 1956 legten die Arbeiter der Posener Betriebe ihre Arbeit nieder und gingen auf die Straßen der Stadt. Der Grund für den Streik war die wirtschaftliche Situation im Land. Neben ökonomischen Forderungen erschienen auch politische Losungen: man forderte die Liberalisierung des öffentlichen Lebens und die Durchführung freier Parlamentswahlen. Den Streikenden schlossen sich einfache Bürger Posens an. Es wird geschätzt, dass an der Demonstration ca. 100 000 Personen teilgenommen haben. Zeuge dieser Ereignise war eine zahlreiche Gruppe von Ausländern, die in der Stadt als Teilnehmer an der Posener Internationalen Messe verweilten. Eben diese haben nach Westeuropa die Nachrichten darüber gebracht, was sich hinter dem "eisernen Vorhang" ereignet hatte. Die Demonstranten betraten die Gebäude der Partei-, Staats- und Milizbehördern, ohne dort Schäden anzurichten. Auf der Suche nach den angeblich verhafteten Vertretern der Arbeiter, die als Delegierte mit den Behördern verhandeln sollten, befreiten die Demonstranten die Gefangenen aus dem Stadtgefängnis in der Młyńska Straße, und demolierten anschließend die Gebäude des Gerichts und der Staatsanwaltschaft. Tragische Szenen spielten sich vor dem Sitz des Wojewodschaftsamts für Öffentliche Sicherheit in Posen ab: die Funktionäre dieses Amts feuerten, aus Angst davor, dass die Demonstranten ihr Gebäude stürmen würden, die ersten Schüsse auf die Protestierenden ab. Die Demonstranten besorgten daraufhin Waffen und es begann eine Schlacht, die noch am folgenden Tag andauerte. Es kamen dabei einige Dutzend Personen ums Leben. Diese Ereignisse in Posen werden jetzt u.a. als Posener Aufstand – Juni 1956 bezeichnet.

Social cohesion is key for sustainable development. While social cohesion has suffered in many societies from the consequences of the Covid- 19 pandemic, high levels of social cohesion have helped to overcome critical situations during the pandemic in other societies. As a consequence, protecting and strengthening social cohesion has become an increasingly central goal for most countries and the international community. Despite the strong interest in the topic, the questions of how to define social cohesion and make it an observable phenomenon through proper measurement are still contested, in both academia and policy circles. To date, no consistent, temporally and geographically spread-out data on the different elements of social cohesion exists that would allow for a global analysis of social cohesion. Rabbiner, Intellektueller, Liberaler und Sprecher der jüdischen Gemeinde in den dunkelsten Zeiten der Verfolgung: Leo Baeck gehört zu den faszinierendsten Persönlichkeiten der jüdischen Geschichte. Michael Meyer lässt in seiner anschaulichen Biographie einen engagierten Denker lebendig werden, der hinter seiner Rolle als Ikone der deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte zu verschwinden drohte. Der liberale jüdische Theologe Leo Baeck (1873 IBM1956) wurde mit seinem Hauptwerk ?Das Wesen des Judentums? von 1905 weithin bekannt. Doch sein Werk steht heute IBM anders als das Martin Bubers oder Franz Rosenzweigs IBM im Schatten seiner politischen Funktionen während des Dritten Reichs. Michael Meyer schildert eindrucksvoll, wie der Rabbiner dank seiner Bereitschaft zum Martyrium fast Unmögliches erreichte. Als Präsident der ?Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden? blieb er in Verhandlungen mit der Gestapo trotz Verhaftungen standhaft, verhalf zahllosen Juden zur Auswanderung und widerstand mehrfachen Gelegenheiten zur Flucht. Ab 1943 in Theresienstadt interniert, nahm er dort vor allem seelsorgerliche und soziale Aufgaben wahr. Nachdem er ganz unerwartet das Ghetto überlebt hatte, emigrierte er nach London. Das 1955 in Jerusalem gegründete internationale Leo Baeck Institut machte ihn zu seinem ersten Präsidenten. Michael Meyer legt mit seiner meisterhaften Biographie das quellenbasierte Standardwerk zu Leo Baeck vor und lässt uns damit jüdisches Leben vor und nach dem Holocaust besser verstehen

States pay compensation for their unjust wars, as did Iraq in the aftermath of its invasion of Kuwait. States pay reparations for their historical wrongdoings, as did Chile to the victims of the Pinochet Regime, or Germany to Israel and other countries because of the Holocaust. Some argue that they should pay punitive damages for their international crimes as well. But state responsibility has a troubling feature: states are corporate agents, comprising flesh and blood citizens. This book develops a fresh justification for citizens' duties to share the burden of their state's wrongdoings. This justification revolves around citizens' participation in their state: drawing on recent debates in the philosophy of collective action, Avia Pasternak shows that citizens are acting together in their state and that their state policies are the product of this collective action.
