Since the rectification period of 1985-1986, Cuban scholars have been engaged in ongoing analysis of the political and social agendas of contemporary Cuba. In this volume, leading Cuban scholars explore several controversial themes, including the relation between democracy and socialism, strategies for economic development, and patterns of social change. Taking into account the difficulties Cuba faces as it confronts changing international trade relations and diminishing aid following the breakup of the Soviet Union, contributors examine specific economic problems, such as the large external debt and shortages of material goods. They also address various aspects of domestic life in Cuba, including the youth movement and gender roles. Finally, they offer retrospective views of the Cuban Revolution-its origins; its accomplishments in the areas of health care, education, and social services; and obstacles to the realization of its ideological objectives.

The shifting patterns of relationships in Central and Eastern Europe require that students of international relations be well versed in the attitudes and internal structures of the nations involved. Until now, material in English on the German Democratic Republic has consisted primarily of journalistic reminiscences or narrow scholarly treatments. Recognizing the need and responding to it, the authors of this book--leaders in the study of the GDR--present an up-to-date and comprehensive look at the country, focusing on domestic political and social change. The authors are agreed that the GDR is not only here to stay, but is also a rather stable society that can withstand moderate, well-regulated processes of change. This book represents the first study dedicated to Twentieth Century German Art, the 1938 London exhibition that was the largest international response to the cultural policies of National Socialist Germany and the infamous Munich exhibition Degenerate Art. Provenance research into the catalogued exhibits has enabled a full reconstruction of the show for the first time: its contents and form, its contributors and their motivations, and its impact both in Britain and internationally. Presenting the research via six case-study exhibits, the book sheds new light on the exhibition and reveals it as one of the largest aemigrae projects of the period, which drew contributions from scores of German aemigrae collectors, dealers, art critics, and from the 'degenerate' artists themselves. The book explores the show's potency as an anti-Nazi statement, which prompted a direct reaction from Hitler himself.
