Is the phenomenon of state failure better understood through a focus on the regional context? To what extent may studies of regional security benefit from a focus on the capacities and vulnerabilities of the states involved? These are the questions addressed in this volume of Comparative Social Research. Substantially, this special issue operates at the intersection of the larger debates on state failure and on regional (in-) security, relating to various perspectives within each of these. State failure, manifesting itself in the inability of a state to maintain its monopoly of violence, has become a widespread phenomenon in several regions of the world. While the weakness of the institutions of the state in question is an obvious dimension of state failure, there is also an important international dimension. In many of these cases, conflicts are interwoven and violence spills across borders.

This book examines diplomatic influence and collective decision-making within the transatlantic security regime, focusing on the four major member states of NATO: France, Germany, the UK, and the United States. Two cases of post-Cold War transatlantic military intervention are examined in which regime member states sought to develop and adopt a single, collective policy on the use of military force outside of NATO's territorial area of operations: Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. The question is, what conditions or factors increase or decrease the likelihood of the member states of the transatlantic security regime adopting a common, collective policy with regard to military intervention in a given case? The author answers that question by testing the roles of six alternative rival explanations: power, threat perception, international institutions, risk analysis, perceptual lenses, and domestic political pressures.

The objective of this series is to promote theory and research in the increasingly growing area of occupational stress, health and well being, and in the process, to bring together and showcase the work of the best researchers and theorists who contribute to this area. Questions regarding work stress span many disciplines and many specialized journals. It is increasingly difficult to track, and even harder to integrate, the work from these diverse fields. Our plan is to provide a multidisciplinary and international collection that gives a thorough and critical assessment of knowledge, and major gaps in knowledge, on occupational stress and well being. Furthermore, because we will be publishing monograph-length conceptual papers, our interest is in promoting the careful development of truly path-breaking contributions that can significantly advance theory and provide specific directions for future work.

Despite progress in recent years, there is growing evidence that OECD countries are not on track to reach some of their key environmental goals. This report examines the strategies and instruments that governments use to ensure compliance with pollution prevention and control regulations, particularly in the industrial sector. It compares the compliance assurance systems of six OECD countries - Finland, France, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States - as well as those of China and Russia. The report provides policy makers, environmental regulators, and other stakeholders with a comprehensive analysis of the design, management aspects, and the main elements of government compliance and enforcement programmes. Focusing on compliance promotion, compliance monitoring, and non-compliance response, it identifies and compares good practices, sets them in context of different countries' regulatory cultures and highlights the key international trends.

This book demonstrates that there needs to be a shift from spatial to social tasks, because the notion that architecture should be an expression of its time or of the might of its commissioners pales into insignificance when compared to its value in resolving societal problems. This volume serves as the publication accompanying the international touring exhibition, which will receive its premiere as the Dutch presentation at the Architecture Biennale in São Paulo. The NAI selected 22 Dutch architecture firms with distinctive ideas concerning the seven stated themes and an unbridled ambition to do something about them. The result is an agenda for the future of our living environment, but is also a sampler of the creative power of designers to provide its actual substance.
