Amerika-Bilder und Amerika-Wissen bilden ein Themenfeld, das in hohem Maße das Selbstverständnis der heutigen europäischen Gesellschaften berührt – und damit auch die in Deutschland und Tschechien. Dies ist in politischer Hinsicht zum einen auf die Bedeutung der USA im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert, vor allem als größte westliche Siegermacht des Zweiten Weltkriegs, zum anderen auf ihre Rolle als Führungsmacht des westlichen Bündnisses im Ost-West-Konflikt zurückzuführen. Hier beeinflusste sie als (demokratisches) Vorbild und als Feindbild ganze Generationen, in manchen Fällen – wie in der westdeutschen Linken – zuweilen beides zusammen: ungezügelter Kapitalismus und die Bürgerrechtsbewegungen der Sechzigerjahre waren hier zwei Seiten derselben Medaille. Mindestens ebenso bedeutsam war der Einfluss der USA in der Populärkultur, vor allem im Bereich der Mode, Musik und Filmindustrie. Hier faszinierte (und fasziniert) sie Menschen über Grenzen und politische Lager hinweg. Ein weiteres beredtes Zeugnis davon, das schon in die Zeit vor dem zwanzigsten Jahrhundert zurückreicht, legen die große Auswanderungswellen nach Übersee ab – vor allem eben in die USA, die auf in Europa lebende Menschen eine starke Imaginationskraft ausstrahlten und für die Hoffnung auf ein erträglicheres Leben standen. Amerika war und ist eine der wirkmächtigsten Projektionsflächen der europäischen Gesellschaften. Eigene Wünsche, Hoffnungen, aber auch Kritik und Unsicherheiten ließen sich über eine Wahrnehmung, Diskussion und Reflexion von Amerika-Bildern und Amerika-Wissen hervorragend verhandeln. Nicht zuletzt leistete dies einer Selbstvergewisserung Vorschub, denn oftmals schärfte sich das Bild von eigenen Identitätskonstruktionen (zumindest von Teilen der Gesellschaft) bei Betrachtung der amerikanischen "Freunde" bzw. "Feinde" jenseits des Atlantiks. Die Gemeinsame Deutsch-Tschechische Schulbuchkommission hat sich daher diesem Themenfeld angenommen und veröffentlich im vorgelegten Sammelband ausgewählte Vorträge der vom 15. bis 17. November 2018 im sächsischen Bad Schandau veranstalteten XV. deutsch-tschechischen Schulbuchkonferenz zum Thema "Amerika-Wissen und Amerika-Bilder. Transatlantische Beziehungen in Schulbüchern und Populärkultur in Deutschland und Tschechien".

This working paper is a systematic review of 101 articles dealing with early-career researchers (ECRs) in Latin America and the Caribbean. While the social study of science and higher education in this region has developed for several decades, the social contexts in which ECRs' trajectories take place have been scarcely explored. In analysing the ways in which the literature has studied this issue, we found that the most dominant themes are growth and transformation in research and higher education, academic productivity and efficiency, issues in the labour market and job insecurity, international mobility and, to a lesser extent, gender and diversity. Strikingly, by examining these themes regarding the intersection between micro-, meso- and macro-dimensions of social activity and individual agency, we demonstrate that this literature is silent about the actual experience of ECRs. Thus, this literature overlooks the interactions between individuals' capacity to act as social agents and the structural affordances and constraints that shape their career trajectories. The paper signals the most significant gaps in this body of literature, including empirical, methodological and conceptual issues, which we argue have influenced the present state of the evidence. This results in a clear agenda for future research.

In the decades before the Civil War, Americans appealed to the nation's sacred religious and legal texts - the Bible and the Constitution - to address the slavery crisis. The ensuing political debates over slavery deepened interpreters' emphasis on historical readings of the sacred texts, and in turn, these readings began to highlight the unbridgeable historical distances that separated nineteenth-century Americans from biblical and founding pasts. While many Americans continued to adhere to a belief in the Bible's timeless teachings and the Constitution's enduring principles, some antislavery readers, including Theodore Parker, Frederick Douglass, and Abraham Lincoln, used historical distance to reinterpret and use the sacred texts as antislavery documents. By using the debate over American slavery as a case study, Jordan T. Watkins traces the development of American historical consciousness in antebellum America, showing how a growing emphasis on historical readings of the Bible and the Constitution gave rise to a sense of historical distance.
