Population statistics reflect a nation's quality of life and accordingly have the potential to be highly politically charged, with implications for a government's legitimacy. In the Brezhnev era Soviet Union, emerging negative trends regarding life expectancy, fertility and mortality had the potential to de-legitimise the Soviet regime just at the moment when population issues were taking the spotlight through the United Nations. For this reason, population statistics were subject to significant censorship. The article examines how this censorship worked for domestic and international audiences. I show the main form of censorship was an editorial review by trusted experts in the Party and argue that the process was defined by uncertainty and negotiation, with personal networks mediating the result. In general, the period was characterised by tension between the need to expand demographic research and leaders' desire to suppress knowledge of unfortunate demographic truths.

The article discusses creativity as an ontological principle as it is presented in scientific-philosophical attitudes of a Nobel Prize winner for chemistry Ilya Prigogine and Werner Heisenberg's pupil and a former director of the Max Planck Institute for Physics Hans-Peter Dürr. These attitudes are assessed in the light of Heideggerian notions of Being, subiectum, ousia and time and thus they themselves shed light on the potentiality of Heideggerian mode of thinking on the conception of the creative in the postmodern society and science. Bergsonian notion of creativity is also invoked. It is presented as a philosophical basis of the postmodern techno-scientific creativity and is discussed in terms of Heideggerian ecstatic temporality. The juxtaposition of the notions presented by Henri Bergson and Martin Heidegger provides the clue to compare and assess the science-based attitudes of Prigogine and Dürr.

This article illustrates potential ways to take account of the use of languages in international conferences and in transnational cooperation, and may be fruitful for readers delving into efforts to promote global cooperation. It communicates research notes and documents from CAAST-Net's stakeholders' conference, entitled "Africa-Europe Cooperation in Science and Technology: Status and Way Forward", on the 10th to 11th November 2009. The connection between this process and poliparadigmality of sociological research in the Institute of Sociology is characterized. The features of theoretical and empirically applied sociological research in the field of political, economic, ethnonational, regional sociology, the sociology of science, education, culture and other fields of sociological knowledge are revealed. FEW EXTENDED ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF POLITICAL STABILITY HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED, MUCH OF THE LITERATURE CONCENTRATING ON AN ANALYSIS OF ITS CAUSES. THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE MAIN APPROACHES TO STABILITY AND EXAMINES TWO RECENT CONCEPTUALIZATIONS BY AKE AND BY SANDERS. IT IS ARGUED THAT BOTH ARE UNSATISFACTORY, AND AN ALTERNATIVE DEFINITION IS DEVELOPED, STARTING FROM FIRST PRINCIPLES. THE PROBLEMS OF IDENTITY AND CHANGE ARE EXAMINED, AND WHAT COUNTS AS THE SURVIVAL OF A POLITICAL OBJECT IS SPECIFIED. A STABLE POLITICAL OBJECT IN DEFINED AS ONE THAT POSSESSES THE CAPACITY TO PREVENT ITS OWN FORCED NON-SURVIVAL.
