Describes two competing British perspectives on the Turkish national movement in Anatolia, each of which was shaped by the situation of the reporting agency. British officials directly observing the movement stressed its domestic conspiratorial origins, while intelligence agencies spread across Europe, Central Asia, & the Middle East attributed Anatolian Turkish nationalism to international conspiratorial forces, especially ones located in Berlin & Moscow. Although the former view came to be the dominant interpretation, the degree to which it shaped ensuing British policy calls for further exploration. K. Coddon

In the week before the attacks in the US 'changed the world forever,' a Norwegian container ship, the MV Tampa, rescued almost 400 asylum-seekers from a sinking boat off the Indonesian archipelago. The captain sailed toward Australia, but was refused permission to land by a government declaring that this nation would 'not be held hostage by our own decency.' In the face of UN & international disapproval, the Tampa was boarded by armed troops & forcibly moved out of Australian waters. During the following week, capitalizing on widespread general hostility toward Afghanistan & Islam in the wake of the September 11 (2001) attacks, the Australian parliament rushed through legislation implementing unprecedented measures to keep out asylum-seekers. The Australian government's actions chillingly foreshadowed a wider Western reaction. In May 2002, GB's Prime Minister Blair proposed a series of initiatives strikingly similar to those adopted by Australia, including the use of the Royal Navy to intercept & turn back asylum-seekers & the internment of refugees offshore on large ships leased by the government. The story of the Tampa, then, is part of an unfolding global story. 23 References. Adapted from the source document.

While there are good reasons to assume that an adequate missile defense is still years away -- war & the threat of war are hardly obsolescent. Rogue states continue to enhance their capabilities to deliver both conventional weapons & weapons of mass destruction by missiles with potential intercontinental intent. The logic of a Missile Defense System is examined in perspective of those for & against in the political arena, the overall UK Threat Perception & the military considerations for UK Strategic Forces & Expeditionary Forces. To counter threats missile defense being part of a comprehensive strategy including arms control, counter-proliferation, diplomacy, deterrence, & other defensive measures.
