This essay is a contribution to the sociology of space & the body, which still leads a shadowy existence in German-speaking countries. Spaces & bodies are seen as receptacles with a clear division between inside & outside -- which is the starting point for other distinctions such as belonging/not belonging, familiar/strange, etc. These apparently unambiguous limitations of spatial bodies & physical spaces are being severely put into question by the processes of globalization. This obvious trend is countered by the hypothesis that it is this process of dissolving divisions that is met by divisions being defended, spaces being closed off, & new divisions being created on all kinds of levels. 42 References.
