The Literature of Political Science: Professional Journals in Four Nations
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Band 29, Heft 2, S. 327-332
ISSN: 0020-8701
The major professional political science English-language journals in four nations were examined to determine how they reflect the scope & methods of international political science in the 1970s. The publications are the American Political Science Review, Political Studies (Great Britain), the Canadian Journal of Political Science, & the Indian Journal of Political Science. All full-length articles published in these journals between 1970 & the end of 1975 (N=669) were analyzed according to subject-matter content as they relate to the major subfields in the discipline: national government & politics, comparative government, international relations, public administration, public law, political theory, & methodology. Data were also gathered on the authors, including collegial research, institutional affiliation, degree granting institution, financial assistance, academic rank, & sex. The data were machine-analyzed utilizing the Statistical Package for Social Sciences computer program, & information was used to document various characteristics of the literature in international political science such as the general orientation of each periodical, the extent of 'parochialism' exhibited by each nation, & the differential spread of behavioral techniques in the discipline. Each journal emphasized research topics specific to its own nation's political affairs, & each employed methodologies that vary substantially from methodologies employed by the other journals. Authors are not likely to engage in collegial research, publish in foreign journals, or receive financial aid to generate research papers. There is little evidence to indicate cross-fertilization in international political science; research pluralism exists among English-speaking countries, & the professional study of politics is diverse in terms of its scope & methods. 5 Tables.
