In this presentation we shall, first of all, explore the background to the topic for today as formulated by the organisers: Peace in the 21st century: between the supranational and the grassroots. From there some remarks will follow on the meaning of commemoration and liberation by giving you a very short personal history in regard to World War II. Then, we will look at the 20th century: Lessons learned. And from there we shall move to the 21st century: Challenges ahead. Let us turn our energies to the need for moral commitment. Let us build awareness of the need for political involvement for when it comes to the protection of fundamental freedoms and basic entitlements of each and everyone, we cannot afford to be out of politics. Indeed, while we may be out of party politics we still have to be politically involved. Let us recognise the need for moral courage to resist any abuse of power, and let us fight for the realisation of basic freedoms and needs of each and everyone.
