Through an analysis of the works of the Berlin Aufklärer Friedrich Gedike, Friedrich Nicolai, G. E. Lessing, and Moses Mendelssohn, Matt Erlin shows how the rapid changes occurring in Prussia's newly minted metropolis challenged these intellectuals to engage in precisely the kind of nuanced thinking about history that has come to be seen as characteristic of the German Enlightenment. The author's demonstration of Berlin's historical-theoretical significance also provides perspective on the larger question of the city's impact on eighteenth-century German culture. Challenging the widespread idea that German intellectuals were anti-urban, the study reveals the extent to which urban sociability came to be seen by some as a problematic but crucial factor in the realization of their Enlightenment aims.

We examine methods for improving models for automatically labeling social media data. In particular we evaluate active learning: a method for selecting candidate training data whose labeling the classification model would benefit most of. We show that this approach requires careful ex-periment design, when it is combined with language modeling

"Throughout Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy in Canada since 1960, authors Doern, Castle, and Phillips examine Canadian science and technology (S & T) and innovation policy (STI policy), governance and democracy in the post-World War II era--particularly focusing on the five decades during the Harper, Chrétien-Martin, Mulroney, and Trudeau prime-ministerial eras. They attempt to develop and advance the concept of an innovation economy and society nexus and understand whether, and to what extent, the current concerns raised about Canadian STI policy are new, or are embedded and long-standing, and whether they can be changed and reformed to achieve other, more defensible goals in private markets and the public domain. Doern, Castle, and Phillips focus their investigation on three principal questions: 1) How, why, and to what extent Canadian S & T and innovation policy, governance, and democracy have changed over the last 50 years, 2) Where S & T and innovation policy resided in Canadian federal political and policy agendas across the last 50 years, and 3) How concepts of science-based governance prevailed or been changed across the last several decades."--

Engaging with commercial partners is increasingly required by public science funding agencies and encouraged by government officials. Reasons for this shift include alleviating the strain on government science budgets and opening up possibilities for scientists to secure jobs in private companies. Universities have also begun to advocate for strategies and policies that facilitate commercial collaborations. Similarly, there is interest—although still scattered in Portugal—among the business sector to look for ''something different'' in order to prepare for the complex problems that await in an uncertain future. This essay addresses the process of gaining entr´ee to a major Portuguese food retailer by making use of the metaphors of flirting and dating. The slow process of engagement with this retailer is described, in particular a two-day ''backstage'' visit of its food retail operations. During these interactions the challenges of commercial–science collaborations with regard to differing expectations and objectives—in areas such as trust issues; confidentiality agreements; integrity of scientific objectives versus the pressures of market-driven organizations; the different nature and uses of information—are unveiled. The disparate conceptions of time and output delivery, together with the different rhythms of making business and making science, are discussed. To conclude, the ''dating'' and ''flirting'' stages of the relationship between social researchers and food retailers reflect a slow process that involves diplomatic skills, open minds, and the constant juggling of ''familiar'' and ''unfamiliar'' ways of thinking and doing.

Barbados is a center of international genetic research premised on race. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork following Johns Hopkins studies carried out in Barbados, this article explores this travel for research. This biomedical science relies on a conflicting significance of Barbados: as a site of suffering, due to the disparities of disease, and, conversely, a site of ease, playing on desires and pleasures of escaping too much asceticism in biomedicine. For the American researchers, Barbados becomes a locus of desire to ethically address the African diaspora without the quandaries of accusations and recriminations experienced in carrying out such work in urban America. The concept of cathartic science is used to describe an endeavor that creates a controlled space to know and act on some perceived sufferer without risk of being complicit in the suffering. These medical migrations of researchers to Barbados are paralleled by Bajan families participating in the American studies as a kind of proxy medical migration to the US, bitterly reflecting on the care available to them at home. This article explores the motives of this mutual travel, as a biomedicalized Barbados becomes a spectral figure for patients and researchers fraught with race, injustice, and desire. The article extends the concept of cathartic science from genomics of race to medical anthropology to foreground the desires and anxieties of any science of suffering.

Never Done introduces generations of women who worked behind the scenes in the film industry-from dressmakers to secretaries to script readers. Challenging the dismissive characterization of these women as merely menial workers, media historian Erin Hill shows how their labor required considerable technical and interpersonal skills. As it pores through rare archives and integrates the firsthand accounts of women employed in the film industry, this book gives a voice to women whose work was indispensable yet largely invisible.

The work defines the sigh as a type of breath expressing or communicating specific mental or emotional states. To investigate the meanings of the sigh, after overviewing preliminary analyses of written and oral corpora, thepaper focuses on a peculiar use of it as a "discrediting body comment" often exploited in political debates to imply the opponent's stupidity or obsessive repetition, by displaying frustration or boredom. In a perception study on someusesof thissigh, participants' interpretations are not significantly shared, but agreement emerges when considering their perception of sighsin termsof valenceand arousal.

This research compared male and female elected social workers to discover whether they report the same gender differences as other elected officials. Few gender differences were found among respondents. Differing from elected officials as a whole, female and male social workers reported similar levels of recruitment, favorable views of power and the demands of office and family, and interest in and knowledge about a variety of issues, with the exception of the issue of abortion. The potential contribution of anticipatory socialization and implications for social work education, political recruitment, and reproductive rights work are discussed.
