Draws on personal experience to reflect on the changes in the Czech Republic since 1989, including the subjective experiences of recently gained freedom, the initial influx of foreign experts & visitors, & the unanticipated difficulties, eg, rising crime rates, that have accompanied these changes. Focusing on the social fragmentation, hardships, & disillusionment that have been part of the postsocialist experience, the importance of research is emphasized as a way to facilitate adaptation to recent social changes. It is suggested that skill building in negotiation, communication, & problem solving is greatly needed to manage the impact of changes. Adapted from the source document.

Examines the main argument of the 1990s school of modernization theory, which sees two paths to development, the "Western" & "non-Western." Case studies of India, the People's Republic of China, & Mali are presented to challenge this approach, focusing on Ulrich Menzel's (1993) concept of "Oriental despotism" & the "special path of the West" where "all good things go together." This distinction, it is argued, has little to do with reality. Discussion of the economic history of India highlights the growth of capitalist structures, private property, & the role of the government to show that they display many of the characteristics of "Western" development. The classic Western view of China is debated in a similar analysis. In the case of Mali, state control of the economy is shown to be much less extensive than believed. It is concluded that both "good" & "bad" things go together in these cases, as well as in modern capitalism. 72 References. Adapted from the source document.

Discusses the emergence of reproductive technologies in the West & population control programs in the Third World, as well as the critique of such technologies & the representation of Third World women in the Western feminist literature, drawing on examples from the Indian context. It is shown that Western feminist critiques have almost wholly been concerned with issues of interest to the West, &, when they have considered Third World women, they have done so only in terms of victimhood. It is suggested that this failure decontextualizes Third World women, denies them political agency, & depoliticizes issues of population control. Thus, Western feminism is indicted for reproducing the hegemonic discourse in which agency remains centered in the West. It is conceded that feminist theory has been extended greatly since the 1960s; however, it must expand even farther if it is to represent Third World women in the context of their subjectivities & collective consciousness.
