PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to look back since the first edition of what was thenWomen in Management Reviewas a way of looking forward to suggest a future potential.Design/methodology/approachThe paper draws on some historical work on issues central to the literature and practices associated with women/gender in management. It also draws on feminist theories to outline what the author calls "testings" – theoretical, conceptual and activist challenges – to some of that early thinking.FindingsThe paper emphasises the importance of differentiating women in order to understand the complexity of inequalities, and white middle class women's part in reproducing inequality. In addition, the different theoretical turns have emphasised the multiple and intersecting sources of discrimination – economic, cultural, psychosocial, social, linguistic and ideological.Originality/valueThe paper offers insights into gender in management, histories and futures.

A large number of nondemocratic regimes (Middle East, former Soviet Union) have demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain their hold on power. Democracy too, is showing extraordinary resilience partly due to the fact that democratic regimes enjoy a high degree of legitimacy among their own citizens & the world. Advanced democracies seem to be successful when looked at from the outside, but from the inside, dissatisfaction with politics is prevalent. Contempt for politicians, declining trust in political institutions, & outbreaks of scandal & corruption are some of the more severe manifestations. It is amazing that given the dissatisfaction of citizens with democracy's quality & performance, advanced democracies continue to show resilience. Changes in image of social justice, an emergence of new identities were the main reasons for the formation of women movement. As a result a new opportunities for women in education and politics has been emerged as well as some changes in lawmaking system were introduced.

As a result of school reform efforts, many school districts report that gains have been made in students'math scores in the elementary years. But America's high-poverty middle and high schools remain incrisis. Beyond the elementary years, students in the nation's high-poverty schools are failing. Forexample, despite years of school reform, math achievement in Detroit has declined in the last fiveyears. For example, 25% of Detroit's high school students scored proficiently on statewide math testsin 2004 – as compared with only 16% in the most recent reports. ( www.schoolmatters.com). At the endof high school, Hispanic students' reading and mathematical skills are comparable to those of white 13year olds (Keller and Garcia, 2006). And in many areas, the achievement gap between black and whitestudents has actually widened in recent years (Loveless, 2007).

This paper investigates the factors which influence the ability of resettled refugee parents to envisage their adolescents' futures and support them in setting and achieving goals. It is based on the findings of a study of 10 refugee families from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, two to three years after they had arrived in Melbourne, Australia. Analysis of the findings draws on Antonovsky's 'sense of coherence' framework to highlight the conditions which assist refugee parents to negotiate their social environment and develop realistic ambitions for their families' futures. This framework is also used to point to ways in which refugee families might best be assisted by host communities to guide and support their children and thus overcome some of the potential intergenerational conflicts which can occur following resettlement.

This longitudinal study examined how adolescents' perceptions of attachment security with parents relate to their process of choosing a major in higher education. The participants were 281 students who were investigated at the beginning, middle, and end of Grade 12. Findings showed that higher perceived security with mother, but not with father, predicted higher levels of coping with the career decisional tasks of orientation, broad and in‐depth environmental exploration, and self‐exploration in the future. However, perceived security did not relate to the degree of change in decisional tasks during Grade 12. Finally, results suggested that the association between perceived security with mother and the decisional tasks of orientation, broad and in‐depth environmental exploration, and self‐exploration was mediated by adolescents' career decision‐making self‐efficacy.

This report is part of a larger study that investigated the relationships between illness demands, marital support, and psychological adjustment in the context of diabetes mellitus in rural and urban middle-aged marital couples in Botswana. Ninety-six persons experiencing diabetes and 87 of their spouses participated in the study. This report is based on data from 87 diabetic patients and their spouses. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews. Patients and their spouses were interviewed separately. Three open-ended questions elicited participants' personal experiences of illness demands. The couple participants reported many challenging illness experiences associated with the illness and contextual factors that influenced their perception about the burden of illness and reported that the illness experienced was often a growth-enhancing and maturing process.

The aim of this paper is to identify emotions that a group of young middle-class voters from Lima, expressed toward a probable victory of Lourdes Flores, Ollanta Humala & Alan Garcia during 2006 presidential elections in Peru. To accomplish this objective, two samples were recruited: one before the elections, & the other after them. Results suggest, taking into consideration biases introduced during sampling, that Flores was associated to positive emotions in both groups. On the other side, Ollanta Humala & Alan Garcia were associated to negative emotions. Specifically, Humala's participation was considered more threatening than Garcia's candidature. Results are discussed analyzing the role played by mass media during the elections. Also discussed are how right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) & social dominance orientation (SDO) influence emotional responses towards each candidate. Adapted from the source document.

This paper addresses heterogeneity in determinants of economic growth in a data-driven way. Instead of defining groups of countries with different growth characteristics a priori, based on, for example, geographical location, we use a finite mixture panel model and endogenous clustering to examine cross-country differences and similarities in the effects of growth determinants. Applying this approach to an annual unbalanced panel of 59 countries in Asia, Latin and Middle America and Africa for the period 1971-2000, we can identify two groups of countries in terms of distinct growth structures. The structural differences between the country groups mainly stem from different effects of investment, openness measures and government share in the economy. Furthermore, the detected segmentation of countries does not match with conventional classifications in the literature.

AbstractContinuous transformation of armed conflict since the adoption in 1864 of the first international humanitarian law treaty compels international humanitarian law to adapt accordingly. These adaptations, through either customary law or new multilateral treaties, always have been towards greater protection, greater reach. As for treaty practice, international humanitarian law historically has been substantially revised every twenty-five to thirty years. This article links those revisions to specific conflicts which laid bare deficiencies in the existing law. What follows is thus a chronicle of conflicts with their most critical humanitarian issues. From this emerges a picture of the changing face of armed conflict since the middle of the nineteenth century. The article also considers recent challenges to international humanitarian law and speculates on possible responses.

In September 2002, an article I had authored, "Iraq's Security and Intelligence Network: A Guide and Analysis," was published in the September 2002 issue of the journal, Middle East Review of International Affairs (MERIA). On February 6, 2003 a UK news report revealed that entire sections of a British government dossier entitled "Iraq-Its Infrastructure of Concealment, Deception and Intimidation" were copied from three published sources, with the bulk of the plagiarized material coming from the article I had written. I was a twenty-nine year old doctoral student when the media frenzy that surrounded this incident erupted, six weeks prior to the 2003 Iraq War. I, as an Iraqi-American, had to watch as both sides opposite my hyphen waged a war against each other that I had an indirect role in justifying.

PurposeThis study sets out to explore the impact of organisational culture innovation on the adoption of information systems (IS) in Libya's oil and banking sectors.Design/methodology/approachUsing a structured survey questionnaire based on Cameron and Quinn's Organisational Culture Assessments Instrument (OCAI), 400 questionnaires were administered to middle and top management employees in more than 15 government and public organisations in Libya's oil and banking sectors.FindingsThe findings showed that there is a relationship between organisational culture innovations and the adoption of IS. The findings also showed that there are no differences in the organisational culture type between the two sectors covered in this study.Originality/valueThe findings imply that organisational culture innovations are influenced by other factors, which are worthy of investigation. The future implications of this research are also discussed.

Calhoun's critical sociology relies not only on engagements with Habermas, Bourdieu and Taylor, but also on the middle range empirical traditions of American sociology. Through a review of his recent work on cosmopolitanism and globalization, community and solidarity, and public spaces and sociology, I propose that his search to explain different ways in which solidarity is developed offers a robust sociological foundation for the development of the most appropriate intellectual formation, and institutional sequel, to the emancipatory project that undergirds critical theory's hope and commitment. At the same time, we all need to rethink how both critical theory and more empirical sociologies can help us recognize the issues and agencies most vital for the address of contemporary cultural, social and biophysical needs.
