The role of economic & noneconomic factors in societal development is evaluated to assess an interdisciplinary approach to economic activities. The primary problem is described as that of revealing consumer preferences to create a system capable of responding to the changing needs of various populations. The suggested methodology is representative PO polls for different populations. The exogenous requirements for economic development are seen as: (1) the ecological regulation of air-emission & industrial wastes; (2) equal access to health, educational, & cultural opportunities; & (3) the availability of jobs for all those of working age. It is emphasized that economics is a subsystem of, but created by, society, while society is heavily dependent on economic performance. 2 Illustrations. D. Graves
