Der Buddhismus, der als eine der vier größten Weltreligionen gilt, hat zwar in Ländern wie Deutschland eine vergleichsweise geringe Verbreitung, das Interesse am Buddhismus sowie die Auseinandersetzung mit ihm ist jedoch groß. Dies war auch der Anlass für die Tagung "Buddhismus im Westen: Ein Dialog zwischen Religion und Wissenschaft", die im November 2010 an der Universität Hamburg stattfand und deren Beiträge hier nun in überarbeiteter Form und durch weitere Analysen ergänzt vorliegen. Die zentralen Fragen waren darauf gerichtet, ob es sich beim Buddhismus um eine Religion oder um eine Philosophie handelt, ob es möglich ist, gleichzeitig Christ und Buddhist zu sein, und welchen Beitrag der Buddhismus zum interreligiösen Dialog leisten kann.
Mit dem Aufmerksamkeitsgewinn, den das Thema Religion in der Öffentlichkeit seit einigen Jahren erfährt, kann auch die Religionssoziologie einen neuen Aufschwung verzeichnen. Einleitend in das vorliegende religionssoziologische Sonderheft zeichnen wir die institutionelle und intellektuelle Entwicklung der deutschsprachigen Religionssoziologie seit der Nachkriegszeit nach und erläutern fünf aktuelle Trends des Faches. Sie betreffen Kontroversen um den Begriff der Religion, die Debatten um Säkularisierung, methodologische Fragen des soziologischen Erklärens, interdisziplinäre Forschung zu Religionen unter Bedingungen von Globalisierung sowie die Weiterentwicklung quantitativer und qualitativer Forschungsmethoden. Insgesamt deutet die Entwicklung in eine entschieden global-komparative Ausrichtung der Religionssoziologie, die wir mit einem knappen Ausblick auf zukünftige Forschungsperspektiven zusammenfassen.
