Metaphors constitute a fundamental way in which humans understand the world around them. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of metaphors in theories of international relations. Until recently, conscious attention to metaphors in theories of international relations has been haphazard and sporadic. This book examines the metaphors that inform the major paradigms in international relations theory.

The issue of the defining elements of a truly fair justice system has become a constant and consistent concern of international and/or regional political and legal organisations. Given the scale of the phenomenon of establishing and resorting to international courts and tribunals, reflecting, among others, the preference and availability of international actors for settling their disputes by independent and impartial decision-makers, the principles and values of the international judiciary have been subjected to discussions in an increasingly elaborate manner. Among these, judicial independence occupies a special position, being tightly connected to the issue of the legitimacy of such institutions, as an essential factor in ensuring voluntary compliance to the internationally adopted decisions. In this context, the present paper addresses the independence of the judiciary in international courts, both in terms of the fundamental theoretical contributions and from a practical perspective, by following the institutional provisions and guarantees for ensuring an independent and impartial judiciary in the statutes of two of the most relevant international courts, namely the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.

Gefahren für die globale Sicherheit gehen heute vor allem von schwachen und zerfallenden Staaten aus. Überall dort, wo Regierungen die öffentliche Ordnung nicht mehr sicherstellen können, eskaliert nicht nur die Gewalt und leiden Menschen. Die staatsfreien Zonen werden von "warlords", international agierenden Terroristen und der organisierten Kriminalität besetzt und für ihre Ziele missbraucht. Spätestens seit den Terroranschlägen vom 11.9. stehen daher Fragen der Staats- und Nationsbildung im Zentrum der internationalen Aufmerksamkeit. Denn die Stabilität der internationalen Ordnung selbst hängt nicht zuletzt davon ab, dass ihre Bausteine, die Staaten, funktionstüchtig und belastbar sind. Das Buch untersucht exemplarisch die Ursachen für prekäre Staatlichkeit und diskutiert, wie die Europäische Union und im Weiteren die internationale Gemeinschaft den Aufbau lebensfähiger Staaten unterstützen können. Hierbei werden neben "klassischen" Ansätzen zur Staatsbildung auch andere Formen der Herrschaftsorganisation (Imperien, geteilte Souveränität, global governance) erörtert.

"Der Vortrag diskutiert die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher kultureller and institutioneller Einflüsse auf Management und Organisation. Ausgehend von einer kritischen Rezeption kontingenztheoretisch orientierter Studien in der internationalen Managementforschung wird kurz auf die Bedeutung und Grenzen kulturalistischer Vergleichsstudien eingegangen, um dann ausgiebig auf die Bedeutung institutionalistischer Erklärungsansätze, für Verständnis organisatorischer Entwicklungstendenzen in international operierenden Unternehmen einzugehen. Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es, die jüngere und vorwiegend englischsprachige Diskussion über den Einfluss von Institutionen und unterschiedlichen lokalen Rationalitäten auf Organisations- und Managementprozesse in multinationalen Unternehmen (MNU) aufzuarbeiten. Es werden die Grundlagen, wesentliche Ansätze, Kernaussagen und Konsequenzen des 'europäischen' und 'amerikanischen' Institutionalismus dargestellt. Insbesondere wird dabei die Bedeutung aber auch Grenzen dieser beiden Ansätze für die Analyse von Veränderungsprozessen in MNU skizziert und evaluiert. Im Vergleich zum noch dominanten 'evolutionären Paradigma' in der internationalen Managementforschung werden die institutionellen Einflüsse auf Managementprozesse in MNU anhand von drei verschiedenen Aspekten diskutiert: dem Einfluss des Heimatlandes, der Macht und Autonomie von Tochtergesellschaften, sowie der Entstehung transnationaler sozialer Räume."
