The South Pacific region features enormous variation in state performance. While Polynesian nations such as Samoa have proved to be relatively successful post-colonial states, Melanesian countries like the Solomon Islands are increasingly categorised as 'weak', 'failing' or 'failed' states. Drawing on a range of comparative studies by economists and political scientists in recent years, this article argues that cross-country variation in ethnic diversity between much of Polynesia and Melanesia is a key factor in explaining differences in state performance across the South Pacific. It shows how different kinds of ethnic structure are associated with specific political and economic outcomes, including variation in political stability, economic development, and internal conflict from country to country. In so doing, it helps explain why some parts of the South Pacific appear to be failing while others are relative success stories - and why this is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.

Prevalent notions of 'education cities' and 'education hubs' are vaguely defined, operate at blurry scales and tend to reproduce promotional language. The article contributes to theorising the geographies and spaces of globalising higher education by developing the concept of transnational education zones. Through an urban political economy lens, we review the relations between universities and cities, consider universities' role in the political economy and understand universities as transnational urban actors. We exhaustively map the phenomenon of transnational education zones and empirically analyse cases from four cities (Doha, Dubai, Iskandar and Flic en Flac) with respect to their embeddedness in state-led projects for the 'knowledge economy', their vision for transnational subject formation and their character as urban zones of exception. The conclusion develops a research agenda for further critical geographic inquiries into the (re)making of cities through the development of transnational spaces of higher education that explores the relations between globalising higher education and material and discursive transformations at the urban scale. ; Leibniz-Gemeinschaft https://doi.org/10.13039/501100001664 ; Peer Reviewed

Die wachsende Heterogenität der Studierenden an deutschen Hochschulen fand in den letzten Jahren zunehmend Beachtung in Hochschulforschung und -politik. Insbesondere Studierende mit Migrationshintergrund werden als eine relevante und besondere Gruppe betrachtet. Viele von ihnen sind die Ersten in ihren Familien und Peers, die den Hochschulzugang überhaupt erreichen und sich für ein Studium entscheiden konnten. Auf dem Weg zur Hochschule bzw. in der Hochschule müssen sie Kompetenzen, Ressourcen und Strategien aktivieren bzw. erwerben, um benachteiligende familiäre, soziale Ausgangslagen und diskriminierende Strukturen im Bildungssystem zu bewältigen. Bildungserfolge bzw. -aufstiege erweisen sich als Passungsfrage zwischen individuellen, milieu- und genderspezifischen Orientierungen sowie gesellschaftlich-institutionellen Erwartungen und Anforderungen. Die Beiträge des Bandes greifen die Passungsdynamiken in und zwischen den Sozialisationskontexten Familie, Schule, Peers und Hochschule auf. Vor dem Hintergrund unterschiedlicher theoretischer Perspektiven werden empirische Befunde einer qualitativ-rekonstruktiven Studie zu "Bildungserfolg im Kontext von Migration und Männlichkeit" dargestellt und diskutiert. Identifiziert werden biografische Dynamiken und Deutungen für die Gestaltung und Bewältigung von Bildungsaufstiegen.

The political conflicts during the Workers' Party administrations led by Luís Inácio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff have been driven by disputes between two fractions of the country's bourgeoisie: the internal and the internationalized bourgeoisie. Their ideologies, policies, institutions, and forms of political representation have determined government policies and outcomes. These processes have unfolded within an authoritarian democracy whose structures have not been challenged by the party. The party's limited power and continuing timidity have produced an aggressive reaction by the internationalized bourgeoisie and the upper middle class, leading to a severe crisis in the administration of President Dilma Rousseff. Durante os dois governos do Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), chefiados por Luís Inácio Lula da Silva e por Dilma Rousseff, os conflitos políticos têm sido conflagrados por disputas entre duas facções burguesas do país: a burguesia interna e a burguesia internacionalizada. Suas respectivas formas de representações políticas, ideologias, programas, bem como instituições têm determinado políticas governamentais e seus resultados. Esses processos evoluíram em uma democracia autoritária, cujas estruturas não foram contestadas pelo PT. A timidez contínua e o poder limitado do partido têm produzido uma reação agressiva por parte da burguesia internacionalizada e da classe média alta, levando a uma crise severa na administração da Presidente Dilma Rousseff.

Over the last decade, cost pressures, technology, automation, globalisation, de-regulation, and changing client relationships have transformed the practice of law, but legal education has been slow to respond. Deciding what learning objectives a law degree ought to prioritise, and how to best strike the balance between vocational and academic training, are questions of growing importance for students, regulators, educators, and the legal profession. This collection provides a range of perspectives on the suite of skills required by the future lawyer and the various approaches to supporting their acquisition. Contributions report on a variety of curriculum initiatives, including role-play, gamification, virtual reality, project-based learning, design thinking, data analytics, clinical legal education, apprenticeships, experiential learning and regulatory reform, and in doing so, offer a vision of what modern legal education might look like.

Private book collections – is an integral part of the cultural environment of the Russian educated society of the first half of the XIX century. The library of an outstanding state and political figure, a scholar, an ardent bibliophile A.S. Norov is a book treasury. In the article the process of the collecting his two libraries is considered. The article also considers the manuscripts and books of those libraries, discloses the reasons induced the owner of these magnificent libraries to sell them. It is noted that A.S. Pushkin used A.S. Norov's library during his work on «The History of Pugachev». A collection of manuscripts by Norov, together with other private collections of the XIX century, made the manuscript stock of Russian state library.

Journal of Cleaner Production, nº 16, p. 639-645 ; Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) education has been a reality for years in many graduate and undergraduate programs worldwide. As EIA has grown as a widely accepted environmental policy tool, several professions have tried to incorporate these skills into their academic training. The main aim of this research was to assess the Portuguese profile of EIA education, measuring the degree of EIA integration in graduate and undergraduate programs. This paper intends to contribute to an understanding of the key factors related to EIA education. A national survey was conducted to obtain data on EIA education programs. More recently, many other programs, both graduate and undergraduate, have established EIA courses. New knowledge, practices, legislation and public policies are fundamental drivers of the application of EIA, which will probably continue to expand to more undergraduate and graduate programs. The association of EIA with other environmental management tools, such as environmental management systems or environmental performance evaluation, and sustainable development initiatives will be a priority challenge for all who are engaged in this domain.
