An academic and personal journey into Albania's post-communist society, examining the links between internal and international migration in one of Europe's poorest countries. Starting from a cluster of villages in south-east Albania, the author follows rural migrants to their native urban destinations within the country as well as abroad to Thessaloniki, Greece. Migrants' lives, experiences and feelings are captured through 150 in-depth interviews, a number of group discussions and ethnographic observations.

Deutsche Jugendliche sind Migranten gegenüber vergleichsweise ablehnender eingestellt, wenn es um die Akzeptanz von deren kultureller Eigenständigkeit oder deren Rechte auf dem Arbeitsmarkt geht. Die Konkurrenz auf dem Arbeitsmarkt ist besonders für die ostdeutschen Jugendlichen, die insgesamt deutlich ausländerfeindlicher eingestellt sind als die westdeutschen, zentral für die Ablehnung von Migranten. Mehr Mädchen in Ost und West unterstützen die Gleichstellung von Migranten. Als Gründe für das mäßige Abschneiden der deutschen Jugendlichen müssen die spezifischen Rahmenbedingungen des deutschen Schulsystems diskutiert werden, die wenig förderlich für soziales Lernen sind." En traitant les conflits en Afrique comme une problématique, cet article fait ressortir quatre caractéristiques du conflit dans le continent: i) tous les conflits africains ont des enjeux économiques plus ou moins évidents; ii) les problèmes économiques africains ont des références géopolitiques internationales et domestiques; ii) les conflits africains sont explicables par des variables politiques, économiques et socioculturelles; et iv) les conflits africains sont provoqués par des élections mal organisées, non transparentes et peu démocratiques.

In 1994 the State, Territory and Federal governments agreed upon a set of minimum regulatory standards for long day centre‐based child care. This article compares those standards with two international benchmarks for minimum standards in child care. The Australian standards are barely adequate at best when assessed against those benchmarks. It is an open question how much improvement the new child care accreditation system can achieve without improvements in the underlying regulatory requirements.

The law and related implementing regulations that constitute the regulatory framework affecting the capital markets in Indonesia are largely consistent with the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) Objectives and Principles of Securities Regulation. Nevertheless this assessment finds that legislative reforms and other actions that are in the process of being implemented to clarify and expand the security regulator's authority and to cure certain self-acknowledged gaps should be accelerated. Further, the assessment concludes that attention must be paid to assure that implementation of the regulatory framework results in a system that reliably detects, deters, and sanctions securities violations and reliably identifies and prevents or mitigates prudential concerns. This may require legal reforms beyond those necessary to reform the specific capital markets law, as discussed more extensively by the separate legal assessor. How significant such further reform will be to enforcement effectiveness will depend in part on the manner in which regulatory enforcement powers and authorities are augmented and enhanced under the capital markets law revision. Capital markets operations are heavily dependent on legal certainty, and in particular reliable application of contract, company, insolvency, and other legal protections.

The new strategy involves the offshoring of production and the out‐sourcing of research and development, and is implemented through co‐operation between a source country firm and a host country firm.Originality/valueThis paper presents a new way of modelling international business as a supply chain system, which can be easily extended in various ways.

ABSTRACTUsing an administrative data set containing daily information on individual workers' employment histories, we investigate how workers' labour market transitions are affected by international outsourcing. In order to do so, we estimate hazard rate models for match separations, as well as for worker flows from employment to another job, to unemployment, and to nonparticipation. Outsourcing has a positive but small impact on overall job stability in the manufacturing sector, and considerably increases job stability in the service sector. However, the effect of outsourcing varies strongly across skill levels and age groups, with negative effects for some workers. This is especially the case in the manufacturing sector, where the hazard of transiting to nonemployment rises with international outsourcing for medium‐skilled and older workers.

In the aftermath of the Communist Era, Czechs and Slovaks sought to enter the European Union (EU) in order to participate in Western European markets and polities. To gain entry, they had to reform their labor laws based on EU protocols. This study analyzes changes in labor law in the Czech Republic by focusing on differences between statutes and regulations in the Communist and Post-Communist Eras. The study is framed by international approaches to law that locate sources of legal change in international organizations and protocols. In reforming Czech labor law, EU labor law standards were established through internal political processes that were themselves shaped by EU requirements rooted in pluralism and the rule of law.
