Within the literature on conflict resolution and peace-building, there is a growing awareness about the need to move beyond 'minimalist' (absence of war) and 'maximalist' (absence of different types of structural violence) notions of peace. While the first concept is too narrow-it conceals much human suffering and does not take into account the root causes of armed conflict-the latter is too inclusive, open-ended and difficult to measure. There is, despite this growing consciousness, a lack of midterm definitions of peace that can help peacemakers assess whether a peace process is on the right track, say 10 or 15 years after a civil war has been terminated. In fact, when operationalising and empirically measuring how 'peaceful' post-civil war societies are, many scholars continue to employ indicators based on minimalist or maximalist visions of peace. In this article we introduce the concept of 'legitimate peace', which we argue can function as a midterm benchmark for peacemakers, and outline the benefits associated with its use. The experiences of irregular combatants and the psychosocial impact of their participation in violent conflict are poorly understood in comparison to the body of research available on military veterans in developed countries. The Lebanese civil war (1975–1990) was an archetypal intra-national armed conflict, involving thousands of civilians turned fighters. Fifteen former fighters were interviewed about their active involvement in the war. The qualitative analysis reveals a persistent psychosocial burden decades later. Former paramilitary fighters have needs that overlap only partially with those of regular veterans. Further research on this population would be beneficial to global peacebuilding efforts and conflict prevention.

Noting that the first decade of the XXIst century was that of a renewal of utopia (marked by the success of the anti-globalization slogan "another world is possible") and, simultaneously, that of an increasingly use of civil disobedience, this article aims to examine the relationship between civil disobedience and utopia. We assume that this socio-historical congruence stems from an elective affinity between civil disobedience and utopia. Moreover, we will show – by extending the analysis of the "new utopian spirit" by Miguel Abensour – that civil disobedience is both a method of utopian conversion and an effectuation of the emancipatory potential of utopia. ; Peer reviewed

Most international attention on Myanmar has focused on the political situation, where the military, in power since 1962, continues to refuse to acknowledge the results of democratic elections, and on related human rights issues. A. Philip Randolph's career as a trade unionist and civil rights activist fundamentally shaped the course of black protest in the mid-twentieth century. Standing alongside individuals such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey at the center of the cultural renaissance and political radicalism that shaped communities such as Harlem in the 1920s and into the 1930s, Randolph fashioned an understanding of social justice that reflected a deep awareness of how race complicated class concerns, especially among black laborers. Examining Randolph's work in lobbying for the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, threatening to lead a march on Washington in 1941, and establishing the Fair Employment Practice Committee, Cornelius L. Bynum shows that Randolph's push for African American equality took place within a broader progressive program of industrial reform. Some of Randolph's pioneering plans for engineering change--which served as foundational strategies in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s--included direct mass action, nonviolent civil disobedience, and purposeful coalitions between black and white workers. Bynum interweaves biographical information on Randolph with details on how he gradually shifted his thinking about race and class, full citizenship rights, industrial organization, trade unionism, and civil rights protest throughout his activist career. --From publisher's description
