« L'histoire de la nouvelle indépendance de l'Algérie s'écrit sous nos yeux, depuis ce 22 février 2019 où des foules de femmes et d'hommes ont exigé dans tout le pays de reprendre en main leur destin. Cette contestation populaire continue depuis de se mobiliser chaque vendredi, après avoir obtenu la démission du président Bouteflika, en poste depuis vingt ans, et le report d'une élection vidée de sens. Car elle aspire, au-delà de la sanction de tel ou tel dirigeant, à la refonte sur des bases enfin démocratiques du système en place depuis la fin, en 1962, de la domination française. Cet essai, où la réflexion historique se nourrit de l'expérience de terrain, replace les événements en cours en Algérie dans la longue durée de son mouvement national. Il offre, pour la première fois, un cadre d'interprétation à une actualité foisonnante, s'interrogeant sur la portée stratégique de la non-violence, sur la place réelle des jeunes ou des femmes dans cette protestation, sur le poids d'une économie de rente, mais aussi sur le rôle central des supporters de football ou les tactiques des groupes islamistes. Il montre comment la hiérarchie militaire, jusqu'alors protégée dans son arbitraire par un pouvoir civil de façade, est contrainte de gérer ouvertement cette crise, avec une brutalité de plus en plus affichée.
