In a recent article in International Affairs Duncan Bell argued that the work of Peter Galison in the history of science could be usefully applied to the study of the history of International Relations (IR). In this article I take up Bell's challenge, claiming that Galison's post-Kuhnian history of science approach can be used both to understand the history of IR and to replace the ultimately confusing notion of 'paradigm' in the study of IR theory. Galison's method of using 'microhistories' to explore the workings of 'subcultures' in science is applied to the case study of liberal socialism in interwar IR. Through this case I argue that microhistories can help us understand why certain subcultures in IR theory thrive, and others decline. This understanding in turn could help us comprehend the state of currently active subcultures in IR, and give us an alternative to the intellectually unhelpful concept of 'paradigm'.

Dans la discipline anglo-américaine des relations internationales (ri), la frontière entre l'étude des ri et celle du droit international (di) est devenue de plus en plus étanche au cours du 20e siècle. Les théories critiques, n'échappent pas à ce traitement instrumental du di. Si plusieurs tiennent un propos plutôt empirique sur le droit, d'autres développent des stratégies théoriques afin de faire du droit une dimension constitutive de leur théorie. On se propose ici d'explorer deux tentatives des théories critiques de développer une relation plus dynamique avec les catégories juridiques. La première est celle de Jürgen Habermas de renouveler une théorie cosmopolite des ri ; la seconde est celle de Benno Teschke de faire du droit une catégorie cognitive centrale pour une sociologie historique des ri articulée autour du concept de relations sociales de propriété.

Résumé L'Irlande a depuis longtemps mis de côté la conduite traditionnelle d'une politique étrangère à travers le développement de relations bilatérales privilégiées avec certains pays, au profit d'une orientation résolument multilatéraliste, qui s'est exprimée par une participation active au sein de l'Union européenne et des Nations unies. Cette conception de la politique étrangère traduit un ferme engagement internationaliste, notamment en faveur de l'aide au développement, et une conscience aiguë de l'interdépendance entre les États, héritage historique de ce petit État insulaire. Un autre objectif politique crucial de l'Irlande consiste à réussir à inscrire dans la durée le processus de paix en Irlande du Nord à travers l'application de l'Accord du Vendredi saint.

This volume and the others in the SSRC series, provide western scholars with an accessible English language look at the state of current scholarship in China, and as such, does not simply provide information for the direct study of socio-political issues, but also for meta-level analysis of how the domestic scholarship in China is developing and assessing the interplay of the country's political and economic reforms with the society and daily life of its people.
