Nakai's address to senators and congressmen points out the deterioration of the relationship between the Federal Government and the Navajo people. He specifies programs that were instituted without the approval of the Navajo Nation. Nakai acknowledges the incentives of President Richard Nixon's pledge that Indian people will be respected and their participation in their own destiny will be actively encouraged. A sovereign, the Navajo Nation has a right to self-determination. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: The Raymond Nakai Collection contains material documenting his activities as Chairman of the Navajo Nation from 1963 - 1971. He was responsible for the founding of Navajo Community College and helped legitimize The Native American Church. The collection consists of speeches, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, news clippings, and reports.
